bdpop, I'll step in and try to answer your question. When each AT40 program was originally recorded, it was preserved to a master tape. Reel-to-reel tapes were then dubbed from the master and distributed to stations. Once stations aired the show, they were required (as stipulated in their contract) to return the tapes. It was the returned tapes that were bulk erased and reused for another show. (The last show distributed on tape to the bulk of stations was dated October 9, 1971. The following week LP box sets were sent to stations.) The original masters were placed in storage. The early shows we're now hearing were fortunately copied from the masters. I hope that helps answer your question.

That must be why those early shows sound so good.

Indeed they do sound so good!! And, for my final post today (I promise!), I'd like to thank Shannon for his monumental efforts to provide XM with the highest reproduction quality available in preserving AT40 shows. Kudos also need to be directed to Rob Durkee who had AT40 program preservation in sight 15 years ago, while he was still with ABC Watermark.
Thanks guys!!!

So, I guess the shows on right now will be the last for the weekend? If so, Id say it was very successful and a blast to listen to. Could XM have done a better job getting things in order? Oh wow, yes... especially it seems on the 70s channel. Shannon, do you think its good to send XM lists of what they messed up (kindly, of course) or do you think that will seem like we are looking a gift horse in the mouth? Are you going to be talking to XM about these issues also? Just curious if you had that kind of "pull?" But, overall, Im pumped that XM is doing this and I cant wait to hear all the others. Great weekend Thanks, Shawn

I have a DVR and it is recording them the 70's station just fine. The DIRECT TV branded Tivo recorders don't allow you to record the audio only channels (I think there may be a hack to allow it, I haven't had a desire to figure it out until now). Are you talking about a TIVO unit from Directv or the newer Directv DVR's? I have the newer DVR and it works fine.

I have a couple of questions that I hope someone can maybe answer about how XM will play the Top 40 Are they going to start from the beginning? Does XM have access to all the shows or just the ones we heard this weekend? I was just wondering if we were going to hear some repeats. Thanks to anyone who can answer my questions.

XM AT40 Marathon on 70’s & 80‘s Chronological Rundown & Scorecard: * No Data Display ** Technical Glitches by XM 70’s Channel Chronological Airing Rundown: 1) 7-25-70 (7-18-70 airdate) 2) 3-5-77 3) 4-3-71 4) 3-3-79 5) 8-4-73 6) 4-24-71 7) 11-11-78 8) 8-29-70 (8-22-70 airdate) * 9) 12-1-73 * 10) 4-14-79 ** 11) 3-11-78 12) 1-15-72 ** 13) 3-5-77 (the only repeat) ** (possibly the wackiest airing ever as it was played on random with a little bit of 1-15-72, a belated April fool’s joke! I loved it! Reminds me of how my local radio affiliate played AT40 out of sequence!) 14) 6-23-79 15) 3-2-74 16) 5-8-71 17) 7-28-79 ** (partially skipped a portion of 2nd hour...missing 33-#21) 18) 9-19-70 19) 8-4-73 70s’s Scorecard: 1970 - 3 1971 - 3 1972 – 1 1973 – 3 1974 – 1 1975 – 0 1976 – 0 1977 – 2 1978 – 1 1979 – 4 80’s Channel Chronological Airing Rundown: 1) 11-1-80 2) 2-27-88 3) 9-17-83 4) 3-28-87 5) 9-26-81* 6) 8-17-85 7) 8-14-82 ** 8) 10-4-86 9) 8-6-88 10) 2-25-84 11) 8-6-83 12) 9-26-87 13) 9-18-82 14) 4-9-88 ** (started at random play....#31-40 played backward then jumped back down to #25 then back up again to #33 ; #24 onward was aired correctly) 15) 12-13-80 80’s Scorecard: 1980 - 2 1981 – 1 1982 – 2 1983 – 2 1984 – 1 1985 – 1 1986 – 1 1987 – 2 1988 – 3 Thanks for everyone's help in updating this list! Well the XM website lists which shows will be aired next week, at least for the 80s channel. You will be hearing more shows as more became remastered, w/ CUE sheets. Will you hear a repeat or 2? probably.

I would think there *should* be 1 more show on the 80s channel as I'm expecting this current show, which is at #6, to end by 9pm, that should leave room for 1 more show. I'd be a lil upset if they didnt!

Ugh-since the show was taped a week before airing, the Dec. 13, 1980 show was NOT the one with the special memory of John Lennon. That would have been a very special show to air.

Danm, you were right. That was the end of AT40 on 80s. UGH! I guess I can soon turn off my player after having been on for 50 hours straight. But first I'll catch the end of this AT40 70s show.

I thought it was supposed to go until midnight.
Oh well, at least it'll be on twice a week.

This is really cool, Ive never heard this show before. I was planning to wait until I listened to more of the 70s shows before I listened to it, but what the hay?
