I'm taking my Inno along this weekend on a road trip to Iowa. Pretty excited to hear the 1978 show Saturday morning. Anyone care to guess what Sunday's will be? Of course 1988 is out because we're in to September. Perhaps 1980? XM is doing a better job this year mixing up the years. Last November/December, they had something like three 1980 shows in four or five weeks.
The Whitburn books are amazing and so is Bronson's Book of Number One Hits. There is a new book that came out this year called Backstage Pass. The author is a radio DJ who tracked down more than a hundred artists with number ones in the rock era and interviewed them. There's some neat stuff in that book, too. Plus, a cool really cool AT40 and Casey tribute at the beginning.

My guess is 1980 too. Great year in music. Please, no edits, PLEASE!!! I'm pumped for 1978 too. One of the last 3-hour shows.

Do any of you write the songs on a piece of paper or in a notebook as Casey counts them down? I did when I was younger and I still do it today. On many of the 1970s countdowns (espcially early and middle of the decade), Casey doesn't mention the progression or regression from the previous week for quite a few songs. It's more frequent with songs that are falling down the forty. That leads to a whole lot of empty spaces on the "last week" section of the paper. Does this frustrate anyone else or have I completely lost my mind? I have a similar habit, though I have found it frustrating when they air a show that originally followed a Special countdown (and here I assume there was no "regular" countdown on weekends when Casey ran one of his special shows). So, if we think we know where a song charted two weeks prior, but Casey doesn't mention the movement in the current show, how can we determine where the song placed "last week" (i.e., the week of the Special broadcast)? Inquiring minds want to know.

SXM-7 is playing AT40 from 9/16/78 this morning, and boy did someone butcher (edit) "Paradise by the Dashboard Light." And XM edited out (skipped) the LDD.

Concerning the edit of 'Paradise by the Dashboard Light', I looked at the Cue Sheet and the 1st page was a letter from Watermark addressing that situation. Here is what it said:
"Good old Meatloaf is back with an 8 minute record that could bring the wrath of some of your more outspoken listeners down upon you. We have edited it down to 5:00, but I guarantee you if played in any length it will get all kinds of response, some of which may be rather nasty."
"We always play everything that makes the Forty and we advise you to exercise your own discretion is exorcizing this demon from the Countdown. You'll find it conveniently located, this week at least, at number 40...first record in the show."
So this edit came be blamed on Watermark and not XM. But it is still disappointing that XM is cutting out the LDD. Just play the show as it originally aired.

According to Rob Durkee, Premiere is slated to play the 9/16/1978 show next weekend.

As for XM 7, they actually were playing the countdowns pretty much as they originally were for a while; for instance, about two months ago there was a 1971 show in which the Ink Spots' 1946 hit "The Gypsy" was left in, something I'm not sure Premiere would have done. 7 was better at leaving the countdown intact than 8, but it appears that both are back to messing with the contents in ways that including deleting extras that aren't part of that particular decade. As I figure it, if they'll cut Elvis and Beatles songs (referring to LDDs deleted from a recent 1987 rebroadcast), they'll cut anything.

I believe that letter from Watermark regarding the content of Meatloaf's "Paradise By The Dashboard Light" is featured in Pete Battistini's excellent book "AT40-The 70's".

....and all that editing is why I never listen to anything except what I work on from the original, unedited sources.

A few thoughts about SXM's broadcast of AT40 from this past weekend (9/19/2009): Yet another hatchet job!!!!! While it was good to see SXM finally dig up a 1978 show for the first time since last Easter (I believe this is one of the longest periods they've gone without doing a particular year since they started carrrying Classic AT40), they could have done a much, much MUCH better job. The show barely lasted two hours, what with all the teasers cut out, the chopped-up bumper jingles, the end-of-hour and top-of-hour themes snipped out, and, once again, depriving we loyal AT40 fans the chance to hear the classic Shuckatoom closing music. As if all that wasn't bad enough, they had the gall to delete the week's Long Distance Dedication. It happened to be for a song that was from the 70s, one that was very popular that same year yet!!!!! So there was absolutely, positively, totally for-sure no reason for SXM to cut out the LDD!!!! When will they ever learn?
