It appears that XM 8 is now making it policy to delete any songs not from the 80s from its AT40 replays. The 9/10/83 show included Eric Clapton's "I Shot the Sheriff" as an extra and Melissa Manchester's "Don't Cry Out Loud" as an LDD; both are from the 70s and were deleted by XM. But they did leave in the LDD of Ronnie Milsap's "I Wouldn't Have Missed It For the World", from earlier in the 80s.
So I don't expect, for instance, any "Archives" tracks when they next do 1980 or 81.

They should either play the entire unedited AT40 or don't play them at all.

I have a trial subscription to XM-The fee comes directly from my credit card-I only listen to the 70's on 7 when they feature a 1979 countdown-We still don't know if Premiere will offer those four-hour countdowns to terrestrial radio.

I'm interested getting XM online, as I'm considering dropping Direct TV and this is how I currently record AT40. Can anyone comment on the quality of the online stream?
Thanks!

Shoot, I'm a big healthy eating fanatic when it comes to fruits, that I can buy much more that with my $14!

I am so upset that XM has been editing the shows lately. 1982 and 1983 are missing the mellow music lead ins each hour and 1973 was missing the electronic lead ins too. STOP EDITING THEM!!! I just e-mailed Sirius, but no response.

The way Sirius XM acts, it's almost as if they want to run us off so that we won't raise a stink if they were to cancel AT40 or not renew once the contract ends.

Yeah, for most of the summer, most of the shows were played in full, but the last 3 weeks have been horrible, cutting lots of stuff out on both the 70's and 80's.

By the way, does anybody know why AT40 stopped playing Shuckatoom in early 1984? I don't understand why they got rid of it. That is the theme!! The themes from 1984-1988 all suck. Coincidentally, that's when music began to decline as well. It's the curse of Shuckatoom.

I just did not like the 1987 theme and closing so much. And then you call that a curse? Oh no, I strongly disagree with that statement. 1984 & 1986 were the best years IMO with lots of groundbreakers such as Janet, Tina Turner, Billy Idol, Scandal, The Outfield, & Cyndi Lauper to name a few. 2008 & 2009 are IMO the worst years in music ever so far.

Coincidentally, that's when music began to decline as well. It's the curse of Shuckatoom. My best guess is that a disco-flavored theme recorded in the 1970s was viewed as increasingly dated, though in the early 80s it was only used as the opening and aside from the opening bars was mostly talked over. Listening to the differing themes over the years it appears that they made an attempt to update them every few years to fit current musical styles, though I think "Shuckatoom" is probably the favorite among classic AT40 fans. I actually liked these openings better when they relied just on music, and not on talking or sound effects as in later years. At least Casey's later "10-9-8..." opening sequence clearly was related to the countdown, though, unlike the Ryan Seacrest-era mishmash.

Do any of you write the songs on a piece of paper or in a notebook as Casey counts them down? I did when I was younger and I still do it today. On many of the 1970s countdowns (espcially early and middle of the decade), Casey doesn't mention the progression or regression from the previous week for quite a few songs. It's more frequent with songs that are falling down the forty. That leads to a whole lot of empty spaces on the "last week" section of the paper. Does this frustrate anyone else or have I completely lost my mind?
I grew up with the Shuckatoom, but have also developed a love for the Cat Meow sound of the early 1970s.

I've wondered what that sound was in the early '70s shows (1970-'75).

I used to write down the songs when I listened to AT40, which was most weeks, in the mid-to-late 80s and early 90s (both Casey and Shadoe shows.) Eventually I was no longer able to listen to a countdown weekly, but occasionally later I'd do that when I'd run across a Casey's Top 40 or Rick Dees show. Unfortunately I no longer have most of the original papers.
I agree that in the early to mid 70s Casey didn't always note a song's chart movement, but eventually that became standard on Casey and Shadoe's AT40s (not so much Seacrest's.) I have printouts of most classic AT40 lists from Billboard, the Charis cue sheets, and/or Old Radio Shows. For the current countdown, I go to the Pulse Music board site, where it's posted each week, to see who's moving up or down.
