Arrrgh. Well that just threw everything off. I guess I'll have to catch the evening rerun. What show did they play? I remember looking and seeing 5/14/1983 as the date on the screen for the show. I doubt they are going to replay the show - no mention of it on the website whatsoever.

^ Actually, the XM site still lists AT40 at 8 pm EDT tonight on ch. 8. Wouldn't that be either this morning's show or last week's? (I've never listened to the evening show)

(I've never listened to the evening show) Your guess is as good as mine - they "usually" play the previous week's countdown, but they've also played the earlier day's show as well that same evening...

5/14/83 was played at 7 AM, and last week's 5/9/87 was rerun at 8 PM. So I figure most likely you'll get another chance at the 1983 show next Sunday evening.

XM-8 is playing the show from 5/24/80 this morning. According to the AT-40 playlist cue sheet, XM was supposed to play Anita Ward's "Ring My Bell" as an Archive Special between today's #33 and #32 songs, but XM edited it out. XM also edited out Simon & Garfunkel's "Bridge over Troubled Water" which was supposed to be played as an Extra between songs #29 & 28. XM also edited out Donna Summer's "Bad Girls" which should have played between #23 and 22, and "Good Times" by Chic which should have played between #12 & 11. Lastly, XM skipped playing "Depending on You" by the Doobie Brothers, which should have played between songs #9 & 8. I guess we're back to "heavy editing."

So I got another chance -- but it was blown by the fact that I'm in the middle of a thunderstorm and the DirecTV reception is shot. I guess I wasn't meant to have 5/14/83

Since none of those songs are from the 80s, it looks like whoever at SXM is in charge of 80s on 8 has suddenly decided to edit out any song on AT40 that is not from the 80s, even if the song goes with the LDD (probably cutting the LDD out completely, judging by the countdown from '82 played a couple weeks back).

People at the 80s on 8 have always blamed groups of listeners who want no DJs, no countdowns, and "only the biggest hits". Whether or not this is the case, nobody except Jon Zellner and Rick Stacy (who remains 80s PD, although he is only heard on the 90s on 9) really knows.
Personally, I wonder if those listeners actually exist in the large numbers that Zellner and Stacy seem to think or just an excuse to use for editing AT40 and cutting the playlists. I've heard that Zellner's goals have always been to play only songs that are highly "familiar" to most listeners--in effect making Sirius XM decades stations reminiscent of FM. I always thought that Sirius XM was supposed to be better than, not the same as FM. Apparently, I'm wrong.

That must be a recent decision, since just last month they ran a 1981 show which had the "Archives" songs in it, and they were from further back in the past (the 60s). By contrast the Archives extras edited out here topped the chart in the summer of 1979--less than a year before this countdown! Editing out the Long Distance Dedications seems wrong as well, as they became such an integral part, probably the signature special feature, of the Casey/Shadoe era AT40. Even Premiere hasn't ever cut the LDD's to my knowledge, no matter how old the songs were or how out of place they sounded with the rest of the countdown. (**they did cut the LDD's from a 1978 countdown in which they squeezed a four hour show into three.) XM did leave the recap of the previous week's top 3 in the 1980 show, though, unlike the 1982 one they ran a few weeks ago (when there was more than enough time left afterwards to have included it.) Apparently we're playing a sort of radio Whack-a-Mole here; our earlier complaints about overediting the 70s show seem to have been mostly rectified--only to pop up again with the 80s.

I used to look forward to the re-broadcasts of AT40 on either the 70's or 80's channels, but not anymore. Too many edits for me. But as I have most of the 70's and 80's shows anyways, its kind of a moot point because I can listen to whatever show on CD-R whenever I want. I guess it was always fun to see what show would pop up on XM.
By the way,for those of you that have XM...the buzz is gone. The channels have gotten very narrow since Jon Zellner got his hands on the programming.

So, it looks like the 80s AT 40 show got moved. If I didn't know better, I would think that XM is doing everything possible to drive away their customers who only receive XM to listen to AT40. I don't think they are trying to purposely drive anyone away, however I think they realize thats going to happen when they make certain decisions, so they have to weigh the pros vs cons of such a decision. I, like many believe AT40 will be gone when this contract they have ends. They have made the decision the number of people who listen or like AT40 airing and would leave if they were not aired is much smaller than the number who would stay either because they have become used to the service or just don't care.

I always thought that Sirius XM was supposed to be better than, not the same as FM. Apparently, I'm wrong. As i have said in the past, whether it is the majority or not, there is a very vocal group who in fact DOES feel that way. Unfortunately, it is that group that I think has killed satellite radio. Rather than ask for stations which resemble what they want and leaving the others alone, they pretty much forced what they want on everyone causing many to walk. I have used Kiss for an example in the past. I originally purchased XM for the LA KIIS FM feed. I logged on to an XM Message board and saw all kinds of bellyaching about the station. Within 2-3 weeks of me plopping down $200 plus the sub start up fees it was Kiss XM and was being produced in house. We always heard rumors Dees's countdown would be back, DJ's would be added, etc. but it never happened. For years, that station was an autopilot jukebox.
