Although it wasn't a government loan (instead one from the guy who owns Direct TV), it would be good if Obama could do something. Wouldn't be great if the FCC would revoke the merger and get Mel's hands off XM?

I tried to record 1/25/86 when they aired it but they screwed it up cutting songs off before they were over. I gave up on that show after that. I did get a good recording of 2/12/83 though. The 1/25/86 broadcast sounded like a six year old edited it with scissors and paste, with songs cut right off in the middle (and I've heard the terrestrial version; they were not cut like that originally.) 2/7/87 on XM was even worse, but the 2/12/83 one was done well. The Sunday night (3/1) rebroadcast of 2/27/88 did include the #1 song (George Michael's "Father Figure"), but the erroneous substitution of "Heart To Heart" for "I Found Someone" was not corrected. Actually, I was expecting that the evening broadcast would be the 2/16/80 show run at noon last week, since they've recently had a policy of re-running one week's afternoon shows in the evening the following week. I'd rather have heard the 1980 show than the 1988 one myself.

Hi All,
I am new here, but I have been reading your posts for a while, and I share your frustrations with AT40 as presented on XM channels 7 & 8, particularly since the merger.
I e-mailed Jon Zellner after this past Sunday's AT40 show on XM-8 (from 27 Feb 88 . . . played incorrect songs and left off the number 1 song altogether), and he quickly replied. He explained they were having technical difficulties that day, and would try to fix them.
He then put me in contact with Rick Stacy (PD for Chan 8 & 9). After an e-mail exchange with Rick, he called me to get clarification about the details of my (our) complaints. He explained that XM has to cut up the shows (separate them into separate songs . . . if I understood him correctly), and sometimes the "computer" has difficulty playing everything back in the correct order.
I told him I thought things appeared to work much smoother before the SXM merger, and he said he is taking steps to produce two copies of every show (after editing, I guess) and that someone will actually listen to the entire edited show before it is aired (YAY!) to ensure there are no more songs dropped out or sliced up.
I added that we (listeners) are disappointed with the amount of over-editing being done to the shows on XM-7, and he said he would pass my concerns to the Channel 7 PD.
I wrapped up by asking why the Sunday evening repeats of AT40 from the 80's was inconsistent, i.e., why did he repeat this past Sunday morning's show again the very same Sunday evening? He said it was because the show from the previous Sunday morning (from 16 Feb 80) had been "lost." This was another rationale he gave for keeping two copies of each AT40 show in the future.
All in all, I appreciated his willingness to listen to my concerns, and he seemed sincere in wanting to take action to address them. I hope he (and all of XM) begin to take better care of their subscribers.
Cheers,
Mitch

Thank goodness you received a response from XM on this-I will only listen to the 70's on 7 when they feature a 1979 countdown.

Thank goodness you received a response from XM on this-I will only listen to the 70's on 7 when they feature a 1979 countdown. They did that in mid-January. Since then they've been cycling through the rest of the decade, with almost every year getting a turn so far this year (come on 1977!)

I wish Premiere would air the four-hour countdowns which started on 10/7/78 & ended on 12/29/79.

Am I the only one who heard Casey's recorded voice say they are playing a show from "this week in 1975" at the show began on XM-7???

And today's March 5, 1977 show it STILL being edited. Why can't XM just leave the show alone?

papathree: You are correct--"this week in 1975" was announced.
I'm happy they are playing 1977 for those that don't have this show in their collection, but I am disappointed that SXM has played repeats for the last three weeks.
Does anyone know: Does SXM (or terrestrial stations that play "AT40: The 70s") pay a subscription rate per show for AT40? Does SXM save money by playing repeats?

I heard that as well - I had to do a double take when I saw the date posted (1977) Also, I swear that "Sam" by Olivia Newton-John was no longer than 90 seconds long! (Luckily I already have this countdown)

I haven't heard a chance to hear this one yet, but it was run on Premiere last year and I remember being surprised at how short the edit of "Sam" was. Maybe it was like that in the original broadcast?
For all the editing issues, I'll at least give XM-7 credit for doing a good job at rotating the years broadcast; this makes every applicable year (of course excepting 1970, which we don't get until summer) of the decade run once so far in 2009, with no repeats of years over the last nine weeks.

Well, maybe it was an edited version in the original broadcast as well - but then I would ask the question "why?" - it was a new song moving up the charts. Why would you cut a newer song, as opposed to an older one dropping down the charts?

I don't know if there was a specific rhyme or reason to the editing, though it does seem to me that listening to the Premiere broadcasts, at least, a lot of songs in the first hour (30s-low 20s) seem to be edited more severely. (Just a casual, random observation; also, that would include many songs on the way out.)
It does seem to make more sense to cut down the older ones that listeners then had been hearing for a while--and that became bigger hits so present day listeners are more likely to be familiar with them, and give more exposure to the up-and-coming, or lesser known, songs.

While I'm not a fan of the SiriusXM edits -- and, like most of you, I've sent an e-mail to Jon Zellner expressing my opinion -- it should be noted that this week's 70s program on SiriusXM included the extra, Al Green's "Let Stay Together" which wasn't in the terrestrial version as far as I know and wasn't even included in the cue sheet (but it was mentioned in Pete Battistini's book!). Also, SiriusXM played the full versions of at least a couple of songs, "Enjoy Yourself" by the Jacksons and "Rich Girl" by Hall & Oates, that were cut in the terrestrial version. ("Rich Girl" to about 2 minutes including intro and outro).
If we're going to pound 'em -- and deservedly so -- they do deserve some credit when credit is due.
