November 23, 1974 this week. Inconsistency! No commentary or analysis here. None possible? -- "Carefree Highway." In Cash Box, it fell 13 to 28. In Record World, it inched up 20 to 19. In R&R, it was gone. In Billboard, it plummeted 10 to 42. -- "Whatever Gets You Thru the Night." In Cash Box, it dropped 1 to 7. In Record World, it slipped 1 to 2. In R&R, it dropped 6 to 10. On AT40, it plummeted 1 to 12. -- "You Haven't Done Nothin'." In Cash Box, it was off the chart entirely. In Record World, it dropped 3 to 11. In R&R, it was gone. In Billboard, it fell 28 to 45. -- "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet." In Cash Box, it moved up 2 to 1. In Record World, it slipped 4 to 6. In R&R, it slipped from 1 to 2. On AT40, it dropped 12 to 34. And even more bizarrely, "You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet" made a sharp turnaround the following week and shot all the way back up to #8 for two weeks, then fell 12-23-off. Supposedly the reason for the sharp rebound was airplay for the B-side, "Free Wheelin'", but I find it hard to believe that it got enough top 40 airplay in one week to make THAT much impact. (Maybe the fall to #34 was an error or something?) This countdown includes one of the few fully a cappella songs of the classic AT40 era, Prelude's "After the Goldrush". In a reversal of how things usually went, Casey actually introduced it with an AT40-provided musical track backing him, and the music abruptly stopped when the hit record began.

This week--
I can forgive the sloppy-to-the-point-of-cringeworthy SiriusXM edits born of laziness and apathy.
I can overlook the cranium-piercing volume of the ridiculous and unnecessary "Drunken "Butterfly" music bed under Casey's stories.
I can look past the twice-as-loud-as-needed SiriusXM stingers that are intrusive and unwelcome.
Because it was the sweetest of gestures to honor the memory of the late David Cassidy by playing a show that has "I Think I Love You" -- surely David's signature song -- at Number One. It gives rise to the hope that these preprogrammed robots may actually have their hearts in the right place after all.
It was very touching, quite unexpected, and most appreciated!

So, right off the bat Casey announces Rod Stewart's "Angel" at #40, and then they go ahead and play the flip side of the 45, "Los Paraguayos!" Is that a known AT40 classic goof?

Not to be a grumpy person, but I wish AT40 on XM would announce its programming in advance like AT40 the 70's and 80's does. I have to wait until Noon on Saturday to hear what year is being featured. Does anyone know of any "sneak peek" methods we could find out any earlier than the actual day of broadcast? I am especially interested to hear what year the last weekend of this month will be presented, and if it is a 2 part show and continue the first weekend of 2018. Thanks to anyone who can help!

Jeff They used to announce the next weeks year at the end of the replay show on Sunday. That stopped awhile ago. It’s happened where one of the SXM jocks announces it while promoting the show during the week, but that is a catch if you can moment. As for two part shows, in the past they have done the split week shows, they have also done both parts back to back in the same weekend. The only tip I can say is, listen on Saturday to see what year it is, and then you’ll know for the Sunday and Monday morning replays.

Ooooh! The pinch-hitting DJ just teased it by saying, "December 1973."
He won't be invited back, haha!

December 29, 1973, to be exact End of the year Top 40. I wondered what exactly a 1973 show this week would consist of. If they were going to do 12/15/73 then last week would have been the time for it, and 12/22/73 was a Christmas special. (SXM's Holiday Traditions should play that.) That may mean we get two year end countdowns from SXM this year. The last few years they've played shows that were originally spread over two weeks, totaling six or eight hours, as one block.

SXM has been spending a lot of time in the first half of the decade, I expect a jump to the end next week.

In the past 13 weeks (one quarter of a year) they have played 8 shows from the first half of the decade, and 5 shows from the second half. 62% vs.38%.
One caveat could be the Nov. 28, 1970 show, which I feel was quickly added to honor the passing of David Cassidy.
But I think it's mostly random, and the year-enders are chosen to try and present them all, over time. Last year they played the top 80 of 1972, all in one show. The year before that they played the top 50 of 1979 over Christmas weekend, and the top 100 of 1977 over New Year's weekend, again, all in one show. And before that, it was the year-ender for 1978.
I wonder what is on tap for next week!

SiriusXM's 70's on 7 FaceBook page posted that after a disco-fueled New Year's eve, they are going to present a "special American Top 40 at Midnight (Eastern.)"
What in the world could that be?
