February 2, 1974 this week. I figured they would go with '77 or '78. I figured wrong...

While there is still editing on the show (most jingles are cut out), it is more enjoyable than the way it was presented over the last couple of years. I guess it's doubtful it will ever go back to the pre-merger presentation but this is a step in the right direction.

I hope the trend continues this week. With last week's show (1974) Casey played the full 6+ minute version of "Living For the City", although the edit at the intro to "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" was absurd!
This week: Feb 11, 1978!

Here's another 70s countdown on XM: Lou Simon's show on 60s on 6 this week counts down the top 40 from February 21, 1970, one of what they call the "orphaned" charts from the first half of 1970 before AT40 got started.

Just listened to the Feb 11th show and it was back to the old XM by editing the show too much. They didn't play the question for the artist with the most Top 10 records. They didn't play the end of each hour music or the start of each hour like they did for the Jan 29, 1972 show.

I love anything Lou does, especially The Diner on Sunday nights. These 1970 shows sound amazing. This week's Lou Simon countdown WAS amazing. He played so many great songs, many that were in the top 40 and many extras (songs outside the top 40, country hits, etc.) And, of course, Lou was full of interesting stories and song info. The highlight, for me, was a set of three songs that were particularly awesome: "Walking In The Rain" by Jay And The Americans (They saved the best for last with this gorgeous cover song), "Oh Me Oh My (I'm A Fool For You)" by Lulu (very soulful and stirring), and "Baby Take Me In Your Arms" by Jefferson (one of the best one-hit wonder songs ever). It was also quite amusing for Lou to play the raucous hard rock classic "Whole Lotta Love" by Led Zeppelin. And, in typical Lou Simon fashion, he had Mr. Snippet preface it by playing a piece of Muddy Waters' blues classic "You Need Love", which was the song that Jimmy Page supposedly stole from to come up with "Whole Lotta Love"

Of note: Sirius XM's 60s Satellite Survey is featuring June 1970 this week, calling it the "Handoff to Casey Kasem". That show mostly counts down the hits from a given 1960s week, as well as some special countdowns, but also covers the first six pre-AT40 months of 1970. I'm really looking forward to hearing this one. I ran across a list on the internet of all the weeks played on the 60's Satellite Survey from 2011 to 2014, and in those four years all they played was 1960 to 1969. I am planning on sending a "thank you" email after I hear it and encouraging them to run more early 1970 shows in the future as there is a 6-month gap between countdowns of the 1960's and 1970's channels. Hopefully they will run a few more in early 2017 covering that 6-month gap. And Lou is doing just that. This weekend was 2/21/70.

I just did the week prior to that yesterday featuring many of those sane songs. Lots of great music in early 1970.

February 13, 1971 this week. It looks like the brief period of airing the complete original countdowns is over, as they're back to cutting out pre-1970s extras. Which means for this early-decade show, four 1960s extras were deleted, leaving just the 40 then-currently charting songs.

Well all hope may not be lost. Maybe new shows to air on SXM aren't getting the hatchet job. This particular show last aired on SXM in 2013. I'm guessing they used that edit this time around. The run time is the same, 2:04

By playing a '73 show this week, SXM has played each of the 9 years worth of 70's shows ('71-'79, since there were no early '70 shows) over the past 9 weeks of 2017:
XM7 Aired Original Air Date 1/7/2017 1/4/1975 1/14/2017 1/13/1979 1/21/2017 1/17/1976 1/28/2017 1/29/1972 2/4/2017 2/2/1974 2/11/2017 2/11/1978 2/18/2017 2/13/1971 2/25/2017 2/26/1977 3/4/2017 3/3/1973
I can't recall if this has ever happened before. Nice variety!
