Year-End American Top 40 Countdown: Top 80 of 1972 We end 2016 with a special American Top 40 edition from the ‘70s. Casey Kasem counts down the ‘Top 80 Songs of 1972’. Over 4 hours of hits from the longest year – ever! A pair of leap seconds were added to the clock. Tricky Dick aka President Richard Nixon ordered NASA to build the Space Shuttle. And the biggest hit of the year, was featured in an extended romantic scene in Clint Eastwood’s ‘Play Misty For Me’ already screening in theaters when the year began. Shhh! No spoilers! And where were you…in ’72? 12/31 Noon, 1/1 9am, 1/2 Midnight Well isn't that interesting...makes me rethink my original assumption that Premiere will be offering the Top 80 of 1972--I can't imagine that both SXM and Premiere would play the same year end special. Correct. They stopped doing that in 2010, at least with the weekly shows. I don't know if it's ever happened with the year end countdowns.

Back to regular shows this week, with January 4, 1975.

January 13, 1979 this week.
Fun fact: the last two regular AT40s replayed on SXM in 2016 and the first two of 2017 were from calendar years 1975 and 1979, though being from opposite ends of said years means that songs weren't repeated, which would have been the case if there had been Dec/Jan pairings of 1974-75, 1975-76, or 1978-79.

It should be noted that SXM played the Supremes/Temptations extra "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me". The song is from 1968. Usually these are cut.

There were three 1960s songs that were left in this week's broadcast, the first time in years that anything pre-1970 wasn't cut out. I'm not yet sure if this reflects a change in policy on their part or if they just somehow neglected to edit this show in the way they usually do.

I have a feeling it was an oversight by whoever did the editing.

Blargh. January 17, 1976 this week, which feels redundant in light of Premiere's offering (the following week.) Plus we had many of these same songs last month when they did December 1975.

Eve of Destruction left in as an extra. Of course major glitch with the end of hour two theme playing under the next segment.

I haven't been listening to the AT 40 shows on XM for awhile now because I either already have the show or I don't want to listen to another heavily edited broadcast. Imagine my surprise this morning, as I listen to the Jan 29th show, to hear that they left in a letter to Casey (those were always cut out before). I guess XM has made some changes (for the better).

I think maybe enough of us have complained and they're leaving the show more or less intact. The oldie from 1962 was left in as well. Let's hope this isn't a fluke and it continues onward.

Actually that was Guy Mitchell's "Singing the Blues" from 1956. (The other extra was a Don McLean cut from the week's #1 album which would have been left in anyhow.)

Oops, yeah I knew I had the year wrong. Nonetheless this is the second show in a row with the pre-1970 extras left in. The teases have been left in as well.

That was the best AT 40 show I've heard on XM since before they did any editing. I hope this new practice continues. Maybe they can replay some of the shows they butchered back in the "editing" years.
