O.K. I understand. Now that I think about it, I once discussed this with a SiriusXM program director, someone with expertise on countdowns. He gave me this good tip: The vast majority of listeners to a countdown just wants to get a reasonably realistic picture of what was being sold in record stores and played on radio at the time, and won't nitpick about what songs are at what positions. As for 6/29/74, AT40's estimated rankings, as it turned out, were accurate enough to provide that picture -- or, as J.A. Bartlett said in the article, "Bottom line: Had you been listening that week, you wouldn't have noticed a thing."
In fact, the project I've been working on these last three or four years is based partly on that very same mentality. I'm compiling my own chart rankings to be used later in a series of countdown shows, or possibly an all-countdown channel, on Internet radio. The numbers, in many cases, are coming out very different from Billboard's. So, I actually would encourage my listeners to enjoy the countdowns for the music and not be hung up on the rankings of the songs!
However -- and this is just my opinion -- because AT40 was based strictly on the official Billboard chart, I hold it to a different standard. To me, the 6/29/74 countdown doesn't seem like it would be an "official" show. They didn't use Billboard's actual rankings that week, admittedly for a good reason. Had I been older than seven (hence my username) at that time, I'm sure I would have been keeping track. Upon finding out that it wasn't a "real" chart, I wouldn't have been too pleased. Again, it's just me. I'm one of those rare birds who want any top 40 list to be as accurate as possible.
So, let's just say I find it fascinating that Premiere would go ahead and run this particular show anyway -- but also fascinating that SiriusXM, for whatever reason and for whatever it's worth, has never run it.
