Interesting how these shows sometimes tie in. On the 10/20/79 show, Casey answered a question about the biggest American act of the 70s and the Carpenters beat out Stevie Wonder and the Jacksons. The decade ended just in time for Karen and Richard though since they were nowhere to be found in 1979 while the other 2 had top 10 hits that year.

[quote author=skuncle board=classic thread=143 post=55831 Also there's an underlying sadness in most of their stuff (this is why I can't stand their Christmas song). [/quote]
...and THAT, in a nutshell, is the genius of Karen Carpenter, and why she is probably my all time favorite female singer (Alison Krauss being a close second). The underlying sadness. "I Need to be in Love" being a prime example.

I'm glad that I'll be able to hear the 10/17/70 countdown on terrestrial radio this weekend-Sirius/XM tends to edit out "AT40 Specials" that have nothing to do with the 70's.

SXM's countdown this weekend was from the week preceding this week's Premiere presentation (Billboard chart date of 10/17/70) and was just #40-#1; all extras predated 1970 and so were cut by SXM.

Yes--both SXM and Premiere use the chart dates for shows between the AT40 debut in July 1970 and the 5/1/71 chart date show. So we are getting two different shows between SXM and Premiere this weekend. Fortunately Premiere aired 10/17/70 two years ago, so it is already in my collection, and with most if not all of the extras.

Should be 10/28/78 and let's see how many of the 4 #1s that were archive or extra songs are played. It's the only regular show in AT40 history with the last #1s by both the Beatles and Supremes. Plus it has the #1 from the first AT40 and a mention of that very fact by Casey. My money is on an edit of some kind of the above. Esp since the Supremes song is technically a 1969 song so SXM will toss that out the window real fast.

I think they'll delete the Supremes song and Mary Hopkin's "Those Were the Days" (#2 in 1968) which was an LDD. "Someday We'll Be Together" topped the chart in December 1969, likely qualifying it as a 60s song so out it goes from SXM. Everything else should probably stay in; I don't see them cutting Beatles, Jackson 5, or Three Dog Night songs released in 1970.

This is what bugs me, it's a double standard at SXM. On the VJ countdown, when they do early 1980 countdowns they play songs from 1979 but for some reason they won't do the same on the 70's AT40 shows. Do they think someone will tune in and hear a song from 1969 and think they are on the 60's channel and change it? So stupid.

I guess it's because when the "Casey Lite" countdown does early 1980, there are a lot of songs that are still on the chart that were released in late 1979. If AT40 had been in existence for the first half of 1970, then they presumably would have left in 1969 holdover hits; otherwise Casey would be skipping all sorts of numbers and it would really sound horrible. They only cut pre-1970 extras, and Casey Lite doesn't have extras.

Yeah, I don't think you can make a relevant comparison there, since by the time the 1970 AT40 shows started, there no longer were any songs that were originally released in '69, but carried over to '70. What SXM cuts are extras, etc. that were hits prior to 1970. Since the Big 40 countdown is simply counting down the songs from a chart (Cashbox is it?) at the time, they would naturally include songs that initially charted in late '79, but rode the chart into the first 2-3 months of '80. As for "Off the Wall", if memory serves correct, that song didn't even reach the Top 40 until...2/23/80? Guessing if they do a Big40 Countdown from Jan. 1980, you would hear a number of songs that initially charted as early as Oct. '79, and maybe even earlier.

Lately they've been matching AT40s of the time by using Billboard Hot 100s, without any alterations of the chart as they once did.

Odd thing I've just realized, it could be just a coincidence but it seems that every Saturday before playing the countdown a Paul McCartney song is played (not always just prior but within a song or two before the countdown). Right now they are playing "Goodnight Tonight", last week I think it was "My Love", before that was "Take It Away". Kind of weird.

Lots of skips in this weeks show, heard one during the Gladys Knight LDD and twice during The Captain & Tennile, once during Casey's intro of the song, then again at the end of the song. Nice job! Another very noticeable skip at the end of Summer Nights.

Another just horrible source for this week's 10.28.78 broadacst - practically every song had popping with some like David Gates' - Took the Last Train - having really loud pops. Tim

And I thought it was noisy during the beginning of "Ready To Take A Chance Again" at #15.
