Not only would the previous top three have fit, but they also cut the first LDD which was "You're Sixteen" by Ringo Starr, can't figure out why that was cut.

1974 seems more plausible for SXM than 1972 would have been last week, since the initial 1972 announcement, later changed, was just three weeks after they last did that year. By contrast, 1974 hasn't been played since June (longer than any other year by now); until this past weekend the same was true of 1979.

What a difference in Casey in the week's shows. In 1987 he was the calm & calculated. In 1978 he was sharp, yet concise. Just 12 months later, I don't know if it was the new faster jingles or what, but enthusiastic is putting it mildly! I actually thought that in the 10/3/87 show Casey sounded more upbeat and vigorous than normal at that time, for whatever reasons. He really seemed to be having fun with the hip-hop glossary segment, and also read the puns (as in the "Cherry Garcia" ice cream story) and clever wordplay in the rest of the script and outros with extra relish ("the countdown rrrrocks on!")

As broadcast at approximately 2:00 EST today on SXM7, next weekend's show (i.e., 10/20-10/21) is 1970! Likely to feature 10/17/70 -- going by their last 1970 show on the w/e of 8/11-8/12 that featured the 8/08/70 top 40 .

That would make sense since at that point AT40 was still off by the week aired and the chart used.

"Ahh, I know you've been waiting for this one...." so said Casy in his intro to the Carpenters "We've Only Just Begun". In 1970 were people REALLY waiting to hear the Carpenters on the radio? It would be another seven months after this show before I was born, so I don't ever remember a time when people were anxious to hear the Carpenters. Don't get me wrong, Karen had a gorgeous voice and they do have some great songs, but overall the production of their stuff is the very definition of "schmaltz". Also there's an underlying sadness in most of their stuff (this is why I can't stand their Christmas song).
Totally unrelated was that the single mix or something of Free's "All Right Now" it sounded very different from the version I'm used to hearing.

Had to be a lot of people considering all 5 of thier releases in 1970 and 71 made it to the top 3. If you were born in 1971, then by the time you started listening to the radio, yes there would not be anyone clamoring for the Carpenters. But they along with the likes of James Taylor and Carole King signified the soft rock that had gained prominence in the early 70s. By the late 70s, times had obviously changed in the music industry.

Yeah I started buying 45's in 1978, my very first record I ever got was Foreigners "Hot Blooded". Although my favorite era of music is the late 60's thru the very early 90's. So I get the whole soft rock thing of the early 70's I just never really thought of The Carpenters as being THAT loved, but I suppose they were, they did have a huge career until Karens death.
