Wheel of Casey this week: April 23, 1977. I'll listen to a June show in April, but not an April show in June. OCD, I guess... Perhaps you'll be interested in knowing that there's a June 1977 show on the horizon.

^^If this is referring to Premiere, then there are two left for play this month. 6/18/1977 has one of the odder broadcast histories: it was played by itself three times from 2007-09, went untouched for over a decade, and then resurfaced as a B in both 2021 and 2022.
6/25/1977 is probably likelier; it's only been played once as a standalone, in 2012, and was a B in 2017.

Given that June 9, 1979 show was hosted by Bruce Miller, it would be a surprise if this weekend's show is not from June 8, 1974. The other seven years have been featured in the past eight weeks.

This weekend SiriusXM is running a "Celebration of Those Who Graduated in 1973" by adding an extra helping of songs from June of 1973 to the menu. Along with these aperitifs, surely they will be serving up a main course of American Top 40 with Casey Kasem from June of that year, by selecting one of the four available shows (June 23 being a personal favorite of mine!) Surely!

Surely! If so, then the logical show to be played would be the infamous June 9, 1973 show with the incorrect chart. After Casey made a big point about how the new computer system would be more accurate, Billboard then discovered computer methodology errors after the show had been recorded, pressed, and was ready to be shipped, and they decided to stick with that one rather than redo it since many affiliates wouldn't have received a corrected show on time. Though it's worth mentioning that SXM played that one last year in the regular weekend slot, and it's been just four weeks since the last such 1973 show--but we just got two 1978's from them only four weeks apart as well. Meanwhile they haven't done a regular 1979 in three months, but that's not changing this weekend as the June 9, 1979 show was guest hosted.

Who got to explain the previous week's mess, offer a corrected 6/9/73 chart to those who sent in a post card (someone on FB recently noted that they indeed got one such list), and studiously refrain from mentioning any previous week's chart positions, not even the correct ones. And who also supposedly ticked off Casey by 'riffing' on his signature tag line at the end of the show. Now THERE'S a show I'd love to hear again.

"If so, then the logical show to be played would be the infamous June 9, 1973 show with the incorrect chart." While I think the "logical" choice would have been to play the June 30 show (more songs that were actually hits during the month of June,) the whole thing has been a typical SiriusXM fustercluck. To wit: Magic Matt did his spiel about the "Golden Anniversary" of those who graduated in 1973, and said here's one you guys will remember... And he proceeded to play "Rockin' Pneumonia" by Johnny Rivers (first entered the Top 10 in December, 1972.) Lisa Evans gave her typically long-winded discourse about June 1973 being 50 years ago this month, and offered "Go All The Way" by Raspberries (peaked at #5 on Oct. 7, 1972.) And the new Saturday night guy did the same thing, talking about a nightclub he opened in Miami in the 80's, pivoting that to "dancing," before playing "Do You Want to Dance" (#17, March 10, 1973.) So, at least they're getting closer. Maybe they'll play "Smoke on the Water" Sunday night!

I was not the least bit surprised that they didn’t play a 1973 show. The exact thing happened a couple weeks ago. They were doing a 1978 weekend and the AT40 they aired was from 1971 or something. There has been a major shift in the playlist as of late. Previously you could almost call it The Bee Gees channel. Now they have been going quite heavy on early 70’s hits. Barbra Streisand, The Singing Nun, Tom Jones, etc. Songs from 1970-1974 dominate the daily playlist at the moment. Whoever is programming the channel right now clearly has a favorite era. Also notice that Wheel of Casey almost always lands in the early part of the decade.
