I notice that Casey Kasem would sometimes play a album version of a song. Like for example...Casey rarely play the original 45 version of Michael Jackson's "Off The Wall" the debut date of February 23 1980 was the only time...the rest of the chart run...He played the Album version. If you have a list of songs that Casey Kasem play the 45 version rarely...please post them if you want.

Mike B Outside of Casey not allowing the ending of the song to play out, what makes the version on the 2/23/80 program different from the LP version/the versions he played on the other countdowns?

In listening to the 1980-81 shows, I think AT40 only played the 45 version of Pat Benatar's "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" during its debut week of 10/18/80 (the LP mix played the rest of the time is the one that we're all used to hearing these days).

They played an AT 40 edited version of Off The Wall on a couple of shows during its run. He played the longer version of Games People Play by The Alan Parsons Project its debut week 1-24-81.

I recall at least one AT40 show (6/23/1979) where the long version of Donna Summer's "Hot Stuff" was played.

AT40 actually played a combination of LP cuts, 45s and then really made problems for restoration during the disco era with parts of 12" singles and mixes.

During the 70's,and before the show expanded to 4 hours, lots of songs were edited to fit the time frame of a 3 hour program. There were different edits every week. Once the show expanded to 4 hours in late 1978,more "album" cut versions were occasionally added, and even AT40 "Extras" to fill up the 4 hour time slot. Would be hard to pick particular songs because there were so many over the years...

I know that on the first week of the chart Casey played the long version of "I'll Alway's Love My Mama" by the Intruders on 6/30/1973 show. After that he played the 45 version.
Casey also played "Living in the City" from Stevie Wonder from Innoversions LP one week during it's chart run.

I seem to recall that in 1975 Casey played the long version of John Lennon's "#9 Dream" on "AT40"-On the year-end countdown,he played the full-length version of "Get Down Tonight" by KC & The Sunshine Band.

Here are a couple of songs that may qualify as having only the long version played on AT40:
"Beach Baby" by First Class was played long each week it was in the top 40 according to Pete's book. The commercial 45 is 4:59 and I think that is the version AT40 was playing.
AT40 never played the radio edit of "With A Little Luck" by Wings. They either played the long version or their own edit of the long version.

The commercial 45 is 4:59 and I think that is the version AT40 was playing. AT40 was playing the more common commercial 45 version (the alternate 45 version, which is rarer, is 3:07 long). So I wouldn't necessarily find it unusual that they always played this version. For all we know, the AT40 staff may not have known the short version existed. The DJ promo has the 4:59 version on one side and the 3:07 version on the other side. But AT40 may not have received that promo.

According to cue sheets I've seen on the Charis Web site and Premiere shows I've heard ...
* How about "Joy to the World" by Three Dog Night, during the song's chart run in the spring and early summer 1971?
* The obvious one: "American Pie" by Don McLean, where the full version was played a couple times (during its chart run of December 1971 through early April 1972), but more often than not it was the single edit and/or AT40's own edit ... even on retrospective specials long after stations were starting to play the full 8:32 version and discarding the single edit entirely.
