Well,Gang, the Fourth Of July is a week away-What is the likelihood that Premiere will air the first "AT40" countdown next weekend?-I tend to think it'll happen-Does anyone else out there agree?

I think it will happen either next week or the week after and the 80s show will have a special countdown durning the same week. I hope Premiere and/or XM does air the very first "AT40" show so we can hear how it all began. I'm not sure what the 80s show will do. I'm pulling for either the 1980 Book of Records or the 1981 Beatles show. Not likely, though, since there are hardly any "80's" songs on these shows, so they'll probably do the one from 1983, 1986 or 1988.

As for the '80's show, I'd be interested in hearing the triathlon show from 1988.

I e-mailed Ed McMann and this week's shows are as follows:
The '70's: Disco Hits (7/7/1979; four-hour show)
The '80's: Newcomers Show (5/28/1988)

The question is, will it be the unedited disco show or 4 hours edited down to 3? Personally I hope XM does the first AT40 show from 1970 so it will not be edited and all the oldies/extras will be played.

Ah, finally, the four-hour show we've all awaited on terrestrial radio.
Like I've said all along, all they need to do is send a memo to radio programmers asking them to set aside an extra hour for this four-hour show, and that it can be aired on July 4 (to fill out times where regular DJs are on vacation).

Wasn't this show released on cd? I seen a few cd copies pop up on ebay.

Shadster, Not long after Casey returned with AT40 in 1998, AM/FM Radio Networks released a commemorative 3CD set of the first American Top 40 program. I'm not sure how many were produced and released to radio executives only, but it was not intended to be used for broadcast.
Some of these sets have made their way to the collector stream. If you're looking for one, however, be aware that it contains -- in my opinion -- a few editing flaws. The most drastic edit is at the end of the show when Casey ID's Three Dog Night as the #1 song. A portion of the AT40 theme is heard and immediately fades -- the program's closing, including Casey's "keep your feet..." signature sign-off, is gone.
Because we'll likely never hear a complete version of the first show, one that's 100% unedited and includes the original network commercials, the best representative copy of the first show is the one dated July 5, 1975. Of course, that was the original show re-released on AT40's 5th anniversary.
In my opinion, the 3CD set is a nice collection piece for show-and-tell purposes only.

To Pete's point, I agree...with one small exception. I think last year's rebroadcast of the first show with it's "put together" closing (I think Shannon created that) is probably closer to what originally aired on July 4, 1970, at least at the end of the show. Regarding this weekend's shows...I've listened to the promos (all they have up on the FTP server right now), and yes, the 70s show is the disco special, and the 80s show is the newcomers special (believe this was Casey's final "classic" AT40 special, by the way). Not sure how they're handling the 70s show length-wise. Will update you all when I know!

I thought the last such special was the triathlon show that ran on 4th of July Weekend of 1988.

jdelachjr2002 — Scott Lakefield means the last AT40 special during the original Casey Kasen era.

No, the Triathlon was the last special that Casey hosted. Newcomers was broadcast on the Memorial Day Weekend in 1988, Triathlon was broadcast the 4th of July weekend 1988 and Casey's last AT40 show for almost 10 years was Aug 6, 1988.

You're right, John...thanks for the correction!
Meantime, as posted by yours truly in the 70s thread...
Well, gang, cue the "oohs," the "ahhs," the "oh wow!'s" -- this week's edition of "AT40: The 70s," which features 1979's disco countdown, is...
FOUR HOURS LONG!!!

Too bad we don't have AT40 The 80's in my market! As far as the first AT40 broadcast...I'll try to record it!
