When I would record the shows back in the 90s, I would always 'edit' in the songs that Rick would skip over so I was VERY familiar w/ the songs he did not play. If it wasn't played, usually an extra was played so the show would time out properly. Sooo, in order to include the omitted songs, the extra would have to be 'optional' just as the actual song would have to be an 'optional' track. As for the end of the year shows, like the top100 of 2000. Starting around the turn of the 90s, (cant say if it happened in '89 '88 '90 but defintly by '91) Rick HAD to omit songs from the end of the year survey in order for those shows to time out properly. Rick would traditionally play the 'entire' song, UNLIKE Casey Kasem shows which would edit the songs on the top100, often omitting entire verse's in order to fit all 100 songs in. In 1987 through 1989, Dees' year-end shows were Top 40 of the year, so, naturally, he didn't have to edit out any songs. As for 1990, I'm not sure. I had already listened to Casey Kasem's Top 100 of 1990, so I wasn't really paying much attention to Rick's show, which was back to being a two-part year-ender. 1991 was the year that he started editing out songs in his weekly shows, to play requests (i.e. the weekend of May 11, he skipped "Sadeness" by Enigma to play "Against All Odds" by Phil Collins. I don't even think he mentioned "Sadeness" or its position on the chart. So he decided to start editing out songs on the year-ender, usually picking out the more obscure songs, but earlier this decade, he started skipping songs that were holdovers from previous years. And, I believe on the 2005 show, he played most of the songs and didn't talk as much (or rather, insert his lame, recycled jokes).

Yea I recorded the show also, on cassette. I'm still big on cassettes. Does directv give you any advance notice on what show is coming? if you go forward in the guide?
I know in '86 Dees did the 86 of 86, I have the 2nd half of that show, and although I dont recall listening to it, I could of sworn Dees did an 87 of 87, 88 of 88 show. And I believe the reason for deleting songs on the year enders is so the show will time out properly. As Rick usually didn't edit the songs on the show, unlike Casey Kasem shows which many of the songs on the year enders have missing verses. Generally speaking, you can only fit about 11 songs an hour, 12 AT BEST and still get in all the commercial breaks.
And that 2005 show is God awfull. It didnt look like Rick showed up at all. The engineers just 'created' it w/ voice tracks an editing. The only good thing about it was that it did play almost every song, but a lot of the songs that year were just pure crap IMO. I'm only missing a few of the year enders going back to 1990: '90, '92, '94, '96 & '97

So it doesn't matter what airs for instance on any of the decade channels, the listings just give the station name at all times. When a song plays it gives the artist, song name, album, etc. And when AT40 or the Weekly Top 40 are on they will give the show, the show date, title, and artist.

I've listened to bits and pieces of Rick's shows the past few weeks on XM, but have yet to hear any of the segments where I remember him doing the WT40 challenge (especially on the late 90s shows, all of which I have in their "original" form). I'm curious for those of you who have heard these segments...is XM leaving them in or editing them out? My guess would be editing, but who knows?

No, Dees only did the Top 40 of 1987 and 1988. Did your station also carry "Dave Sholin's Countdown USA"? He did two-part countdowns for both years. I think in 1990, instead of editing out the second verses of songs, Rick faded them out early, like if the chorus was repeated over and over again at the end. Well, I guess it's a case of "d**ned if you do, d**ned if you don't". You either have to sacrifice songs or hardly do any talking. I'd choose the latter.

Rick doing a one-hit wonder special from 1987, pretty cool. I'm not sure on the date; it's either a July 4th special or 6-20-87.

I think he said it was the 1st weekend of summer, so by that we could infer that its 6/27. But could be 6/20 also as summer begins on the 21st correct? ANd likely rule out July 4th

According to the DirecTV on screen information, it is the 6-20-87 show. It's pretty good so far!

Yes, it is 6-20-87. It can't 6-27-87 as I have a copy of that one and it was a regular show. Funny thing, this Beastie Boys & INXS were a one hit wonder at the taping of this show.
Gotta love the one liner, "that's almost as bad as renting a pair of bowling shoes and they're still warm". I like the sample of the answer song to "The Rain" by O.J. Jones.

Didn't Robert Plant have another hit? And the song they're playing now, Shannons Let the music Play........I'm pretty sure her follow-up hit, "Give me tonight" was a minor hit.

Shannon did not make the Billboard Top 40 with "Give Me Tonight". However, Rick played as #40 5-19/20-84 and it was gone. It could have been a sure shot or #40 on 5-12/13-84. I don't have the 5-12/13-84 show to confirm this. It was not on the 5-5/6-84 show.
Don't get me start on what REALLY is a one-hit wonder which is very debatable.

Don't get me start on what REALLY is a one-hit wonder which is very debatable. Oh I know what you mean. I also remember Rick making a joke, several times, of Aha's "Take on me" as being they're entire musical career, even though their 2nd hit, "The sun always shines on tv" went up the top40 also.
