It's very similar to the special he usually does around this time of year. Some years it's All Request, others it's a theme similar to this week. But I know some of the songs seem to be in the same spot year in and year out for the July special show.

Todays episode appears to be from 7/5/97. And Rick has done a few specials recently. I think last year he had 1 special, I can't recall what it was though......and I know n '05 he did a special, "#1's from the 90s to now" but there were no 'countdown rankings' for that show. Actually, in '05, Rick had a "#1 Hits Of The Past Four Years". It played ten number one hits from each year, from 2002 through 2005. The songs weren't numbered though - just randomly played (sort of like several Hot AC shows like Best Week Ever Radio, Fox All Access, and so forth). Since most years had more than ten number one songs, he didn't play every song. Generally, the songs he skipped were by an artist who had two number one hits within the year - he played one or the other of the two. I was wondering what he'd do for 2005, since the year was only half over, but then I remembered that ever since he switched charts, there was a faster turnover of number one hits than in previous years. There were eleven number one hits up to that point, including "We Belong Together" which actually had yet to be number one on his show (it would hit #1 on the next regular weekly chart) and he played every song that was #1 so far in 2005. I liked that show because it was a welcome departure from his "All Request Dartboard" chart that he seemed to feature every single year. I gotta somehow get my hands on his Top 100 of the decade so far. Sounds interesting.

It looks as if XM has updated their site to include the air dates of the upcoming WT40 shows for the 90's. At the time of this post, there isn't any information on the upcoming 80's shows.
Here's what we have from the 90's for the next couple of Sunday's.
Sun (7/13) will feature the show from 7/20/91 Sun (7/20) will feature the show from 7/29/95

I am really wondering if Dees Entertainment even has the shows from 83-85 Guess we will see in the upcoming weeks. Does anyone know when WT40 made its debut in 1983? Could it have been prior to July, since these are airing today fairly close to the original date? Maybe that's why we haven't heard anything from 1983, although it doesn't explain 84-85 shows.

I have ONE Dees show from 85. 11/1/85 to be precise. Original vynl. Actually listened to it about a year ago. And the Dees show from '05 that I was referring to is here: www.lionking.org/~shadow/afl/9405.htmlFrom September, but its mostly from THIS decade, but a few songs from the 90s. I DID go ahead and record the Dees show this past weekend off XM Hitlist. I'm also planning on grabbing the HotAC Version off the website sometime this week.

Maybe that's why we haven't heard anything from 1983, although it doesn't explain 84-85 shows. I think it started in October 1983. I thought September, like maybe Labor Day. I had an issue of Billboard Magazine dated I think September 1993 and the feature that week was celebrating 10 years of the Weekly Top 40....it was like 20 or 30 pages.

Maybe we should goto the library and lookup that issue.
Didn't the Weekly Top 40 have a different host at 1st? I mean, didn't it evolve out of some other countdown? I thought I had read that somewhere. I first heard the show in '84.

This is how I understand it. According to the Billboard magazine in question, the Weekly Top 40 with Rick Dees was designed for KIIS (or whatever it was called then) ONLY. I know this is a contradiction to Rob's book which I believe says the show was on 3 stations or something like that when it first started. But anyway, Rick hosted this show. KIIS did it to make up for the loss of American Top 40 which is talked about in Rob's book. ABC wouldn't let up on the radio station about running the appropriate number of ad spots so they took the show to the competing CHR station in town. KIIS decided the best thing to do since they wanted a countdown, was to go with their lead guy...Rick Dees.
This next part is based on what I vaguely think I read somewhere...either online, in that Billboard magazine, perhaps in Rob's book, or somewhere else I can't remember. One of the many countdown shows of that generation ceased operation...maybe it was Mark Elliots or something....anyway, when he did, there was an agreement in place that for those markets who did not already have the WT40, to allow them the opportunity to take that show and run out the remainder of the original shows contract. Think of it like when a doctor retires, he usually will sell his practice to someone else who takes over and as long as you have no objection, you go to that new doctor. New doctor, but apart of the same lineage you were apart of before. I hope this makes sense. It could also be totally made up in my head, but I think something to this effect is what happened.

Perhaps the confusion stems from the fact that Elliot's show was called the "Weekly Top *30*."

By the way, while I haven't gotten to listen to this past weekend's "Part 2" yet, the first half of Rick's "countdown" of the top hits of the decade so far was HORRENDOUS. It wasn't a countdown at all. No chart positions were ever given. Augh.
