Here's my critique of the countdown from 7/9/83 which Premiere is airing this weekend:
#40-"Try Again"-Champaign-Great follow up to their hit from two years earlier:"How Bout Us".
#39-"Rock & Roll Is King"-Electric Light Orchestra-Great song that never receives recurrent airplay.
#38-"China Girl"-David Bowie-Great follow up to "Let's Dance" which was also on the countdown from 7/9/83.
#37-"Faithfully"-Journey-An undisputed classic that went on to become an oft requested Long Distance Dedication.
#36-"White Wedding"-Billy Idol-Great song.
#35-"Stop In The Name Of Love"-Hollies-This marked the final top forty appearance for this group who were part of the first wave of the British Invasion in the mid-1960's-Great rendition of a Supremes classic-FYI:Founding members Allan Clarke & Graham Nash can be heard on this song.
#34-"Rock Of Ages"-Def Leppard-The second release from their album "Pyromania"-Great song that still receives airplay on classic rock stations.
#33-"Always Something There To Remind Me"-Naked Eyes-Great rendition of a much covered Burt Bacharach-Hal David composition.
#32-"It's A Mistake"-Men At Work-The second release from their album "Cargo"-Great song that radio has chosen to ignore.
#31-"Let's Dance"-David Bowie-Fantastic song that features the late Stevie Ray Vaughan on guitar.
#30-"Saved By Zero"-The Fixx-The debut release from this British group that featured Cy Curnin on lead vocals-Great song.
#29-"Take Me To Heart"-Quarterflash-Their final top forty hit-Another great song that radio has chosen to ignore.
#28-"(Keep Feeling)Fascination"-Human League-Great song.
#27-"Roll Me Away"-Bob Seger-the third & final release from his album "The Distance"-Great song.
#26-"Wishing"-A Flock Of Seagulls-Their final top forty hit-Great song.
#25-"Maniac"-Michael Sembello-The first of two top forty hits for this native of Philadelphia,PA who played behind such performers as Stevie Wonder,Diana Ross,& Donna Summer-Great song that was featured on the soundtrack of the Jennifer Beals movie "Flashdance".
#24-"Beat It"-Michael Jackson-A former #1 hit & another undisputed classic.
#23-"Hot Girls In Love"-Loverboy-One of their lesser known hits-Great song.
#22-"Cuts Like A Knife"-Bryan Adams-The title track from that album-Great song.
#21-"Affair Of The Heart"-Rick Springfield-Another great song that radio has chosen to ignore.
#20-"Sweet Dreams"-Eurythmics-The debut release for the British duo of Annie Lennox & Dave Stewart-Another undisputed classic.
#19-"Baby Jane"-Rod Stewart-OK,but I prefer his earlier hits like "Maggie May" & "Tonight's The Night".
#18-"She Works Hard For The Money"-Donna Summer-One of her best songs.
#17-"All This Love"-Debarge-Fantastic song that radio has chosen to ignore.
#16-"She's A Beauty"-The Tubes-See above critique of "All This Love".
#15-"1999"-Prince-Great song that became a hit again in,you guessed it,1999.
#14-"Stand Back"-Stevie Nicks-The initial release from her album "The Wild Heart"-Great song that still receives recurrent airplay.
#13-"Is There Something I Should Know"-Duran Duran-Great song.
#12-"I'm Still Standing"-Elton John-One of his greatest hits.
#11-"Family Man"-Hall & Oates-Can't understand why this song doesn't receive recurrent airplay.
#10-"Our House"-Madness-Not to be confused with a 1970 hit by Crosby,Stills,Nash,& Young,this was the first of two top forty hits for this British ska band that featured Graham "Suggs" Mc Pherson on lead vocals-Great song that was subsequently featured in an ad campaign for Maxwell House coffee.
#9-"Don't Let It End"-Styx-Pretty ballad.
#8-"Come Dancing"-The Kinks-One of their best songs.
#7-"Time (Clock Of The Heart)"-Culture Club-Great follow up to "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me?".
#6-"Wanna Be Startin' Something"-Michael Jackson-The fourth consecutive top ten release from the album "Thriller"-Great song.
#5-"Too Shy"-Kajagoogoo-The only top forty hit for this British group that featured Chris Hamill on lead vocals-Great song-FYI:In 1985,Hamill released a solo hit called "Never Ending Story" under the name Limahl.
#4-"Never Gonna Let You Go"-Sergio Mendes featuring Joe Pizzulo & Leza Miller-An undisputed classic that was written by the legendary songwriting team of Barry Mann & Cynthia Weil.
#3-"Flashdance-What A Feeling"-Irene Cara-Her biggest hit overall & another undisputed classic.
#2-"Electric Avenue"-Eddy Grant-The first of two top forty hits for this British singer & songwriter-Great song.
#1-"Every Breath You Take"-The Police-Their biggest hit overall & another undisputed classic.
