Then where did the info of "when doves cry" on the top 40 of 89 being Number 1 for 1984 come from?
To answer your other question, I really think he hangs it up either the last week of June or first week of July, 2010. That marks his 40th year doing the countdowns, the one in which he is most famous for which counted from 40 up. Let's be honest, the numbers say he doesn't make it to 50 on the air. I think he knows that too and rides off into the sunset at 40.

I love the #1 revisionists history moment of the year. Jump is somehow the new #1 song of 1984. So if you are keeping count, it has gone from "Say, Say, Say" from 84-88; in 1989 the #1 song of 84 became "When Doves Cry", and now after 19 years of trying, "Jump" finally claims the top.

Just thought I would throw this out, if any of us are on Facebook we could all join up as friends. If anyone wants to add me, I am Paul Zimmerman and in Tampa, Fl.
I figure for those who come along later we can already have our info here to add for those who wish to.

The station I listened to f'd up the next to last segment. Once #4 started it started playing commercials and eventually took it off. I believe it was a station error, not an internet one.

It's apparent that the show is about the media and the Hollywood life rather than about what AT40 was originally intended, the popularity of the music itself (gee, what a concept). But when you have statements from Billboard publications saying that the charts are for the business only and have nothing to do with entertainment, what do you expect? Well, Billboard has pretty much always run their business model towards that concept. Why is it so shocking they said it? How many average Joe's working in an office making $30K a year are going to plunk down $300-$400 for a magazine sub per year?

The show dissapeared. It bounced around airing at different stations in markets I lived in. I know in 91-early 93 it aired on WAPE in Jacksonville on Sunday nights at 10. 99.9 Kiss FM in Daytona aired it for the last half of 1993 and into very early 1994 Saturday mornings from 6-9 before they dropped it for Rick Dees. When I lived in Titusville (I moved there in late 1993), the show aired on WA1A Saturday morning from 7-10 I believe and aired there through 1995 sometime. And then when I was visiting Orlando after moving back to Jacksonville in October 1995, I heard it on XL 106.7 again Saturday mornings at 7.
They tried to make the Hitlist relevant at various points. First with Adam Curry being the host, but then later by trying to fool people into thinking the show was live. I remember the intro's and outro's for segements being "hitlist....live"
Personally I hated the Elvis Duran version. Adam Curry's was ok, but the edits were awful. You could tell he was almost reading a sentence or two, cutting, and starting the next sentence. It was terrible in that respect.
The show was produced from the Entertainment Radio Network and in the internets younger but beginning to expand days of 96-97, you could actually listen to the show online every week from ERN's website.

I just ran across something I thought I would pass along. The station I record AT40: The 80's from, Magic 97.9, is apparently going to be airing the Top 100 of 1980 both New Years Eve and New Years Day. Their website is www.magic979.com if you want more info.

FYI, you will be able to listen to, among others, the following Year-End Chart shows this weekend (December 27-28): American Top 40 The '70s - Top 40 Songs of 1971 American Top 40 The '80s - Top 50 Songs of 1980 American Top 10 - Top 30 AC Songs of 2008 American Top 20 - Top 60 Hot AC Songs of 2008 Pt. 1 (#60-#31) American Top 40 with Ryan Seacrest - Top 100 Songs of 2008 Pt. 2 (#50 - #1) (* Pop and Hot AC versions) Rick Dees Weekly Top 40 - Top 100 Songs of 2008 Pt. 2 (# 50-#1) (* Pop, Hot AC and Rhythmic versions) Country Top 40 with Bob Kingsley - Top 100 Country Songs of 2008 Pt. 1 (#100-#51) American Country Countdown with Kix Brooks - First Week of the YE Countdown (*I am not sure if they will play Top 50 only or Pt.1 of Top 100.) Smooth Jazz Top 20 Countdown with Allen Kepler - Top 20 Smooth Jazz Songs of 2008 Sirius XM shows will be added.... Country Top 40 now does a Top 100? They have only done Top 50 for several years dating back to Bob on ACC. Also on AT40's website, it seems to indicate only a 1 week Top 40/50 for the HAC show.

In 2002, that same show was rerun again in 2002. In fact, some stations that flipped to all Xmas music, would replay the same show each weekend for about 4 weeks. In 2003, "Top 30 Christmas Songs Countdown" had about roughly 3 or 4 songs changed, but it the rest was the same from the 2001 show. Once again, the all Xmas stations ran the same show for 4 weeks in a row. I remember hearing about that. HAC and AC stations that aired Casey's shows but flipped to all Christmas would play that same show every week for a month, and I think some were airing it for close to 2. As much as I think the all Christmas music format on radio stations is stupid, it's popular with enough people that it returns each year and at least AT10 made Christmas themed shows to go along with the format and it wasn't just the same show over and over.

I will post here something I posted yesterday on another message board I post on, I did so sometime mid 3rd quarter I believe:
Attention Detr0it Li0ns,
Now that you have pretty much guaranteed yourself the first ever 0-15 start, you have an obligation to NFL fans from coast to coast. You cannot let us down next week. Many of us have invested much of our time talking about you, watching you, making fun of you, and of course laughing at you. Next week is your chance to make history. Look back in the past, no one remembers most of the 1-15 teams. While that level of ineptitude is truly special, those teams are still numerous. 0-16 is in a class all by itself. Every fan will forever remember this truly unique team, and it will bring laughter and joy to us all...especially in those hard times when our own teams suck. But this can only happen, you can only become immortal by taking care of business next weekend. In a time of economic recession, war, and high prices, we need something constant, steady, and unshakable. That steady hand in times of peril is you! Please do not let us down. Merry Christmas, Happy Hannukah, Cool Kwanzaa, Bodacious Boxing Day, Rad Ramadan, and if I left anyone out I apologize.
Sincerely Yours, Paul

On Thursday my wife and son gave me my Christmas present, an Iphone. I downloaded the "I Heart Music" app for it and when I went to it there is a 24 hour AT40 music channel. This is not the same one from the past that aired all the old AT40 FB shows. In fact, I am not sure it airs AT40 at all. So far all I have heard is CHR music with some AT40 liners. I dont think it is available on the I Heart Radio website, but I didnt look all that hard either.

Man. Drop the show just before the year enders were to begin?? sheesh, what bs. What irritates the most is if you want to drop the show, whatever. But announce to people you are doing so they don't tune in thinking they are going to hear something they aren't.
