Anyone else here love songs with long instrumental intros or outros, or instrumentals in the middle of the song that last at least 1 minute? There are some fantastic AT40 tunes with long instrumental passages. A few examples:
Long instrumental intro: "Papa Was A Rollin' Stone" by The Temptations has an instrumental intro that lasted 1:55 in its single version and went to #1. "Black Magic Woman" by Santana's instrumental opening is 1:06 in its single version, longer on the album version. Long instrumental middle: "Year Of The Cat" by Al Stewart has back to back violin, acoustic guitar, electric guitar and saxophone solos that clock in together at 1:22.* Long instrumental outro: "Hotel California" by The Eagles has an instrumental ending that clocks in at 2:10. "From The Beginning" by Emerson Lake & Palmer has an instrumental ending that lasts 2:01.
* By the way, "Year Of The Cat"'s album version has intro, middle section and outro instrumentals that all last 60 seconds plus... but the instrumental intro and outro are edited under 60 seconds each on the single version.
So... what are some other AT40 single versions of songs (other than full instrumentals) where there are only instrumental parts (no singing) for at least the first 60 seconds, the last minute of the song, or in the middle of the song? A song like "25 or 6 to 4" by Chicago wouldn't count as the single edit's instrumental middle section clocks in at :39.

Haven't timed it, but I know the instrumental intro to then-John Cougar's "I Need a Lover" is over a minute.

IMO, the absolute best 'long instrumental intro' song was never released as a single: Elton John's "Funeral For a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding".

I was going to post a few weeks back when "From the Beginning " was in the countdown that week about songs with long instrumental endings. So besides that one with the 2 minute or so instrumental ending are a couple from 1980..."Cars" and "I Can't Tell You Why". And one of my faves in this regard with a 2 minute instrumental ending is from a year earlier than those..."What You Won't Do For Love".

How much of the ending solo did the single version of "Freebird" retain?

Haven't timed it, but I know the instrumental intro to then-John Cougar's "I Need a Lover" is over a minute. That's the first song I thought of when I saw this thread. 😂 And by the way, his vocals kick in at 2:30 (song length is 5:35). The song's almost half over!

Similarly, among AT40’s Most Extraordinary British Hits was the New Vaudeville Band’s “Winchester Cathedral,” which had a one-minute instrumental opening and a total running time of 2½ minutes. And an example on the tail end, the closing to “Ramblin’ Man” by the Allman Brothers Band ran nearly two minutes.

Mr. Stewart reached into that bag of tricks again almost two years later with Time Passages.

True but the single edit chops the intro way down to 23 seconds. I love the long intro to "I Need A Lover" but many Top 40 stations didn't play the album version. Agreed on "Funeral For A Friend" being an awesome long intro... if only it made the Top 40.

How much of the ending solo did the single version of "Freebird" retain? A single edit version on YouTube has the ending clocking in at 1:10... so it counts!

The last word in that song is uttered at 1:26, and the song is 3:50! The instrumental ending to "I Can't Tell You Why" clocks in at 1:36... another excellent selection. The single edit of "What You Wont Do For Love" clocks in at... 45 seconds. However, the album version clocks in at a full 2 minutes. I love that song! Another song with a long intro is "Why Can't We Live Together" by Timmy Thomas. The intro clocks in at 1:34.

Not sure how long it lasts, but the orchestral beginning of Murray Head's 'One Night In Bangkok' is quite long.

Theme From Shaft by Isaac Hayes is 3:15 in the single version and the intro is about 1:50.
