IMO, the absolute best 'long instrumental intro' song was never released as a single: Elton John's "Funeral For a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding". Totally agree on this. I was largely unaware of this song until I saw Elton in concert in 2004. Since then it's been one of my all-time favorite songs.

Don't forget a long instrumental to start off Timmy Thomas' "Why Can't We Live Together".

I was largely unaware of this song until I saw Elton in concert in 2004. Since then it's been one of my all-time favorite songs. It was his concert opener on several tours, including his '75 tour with a mostly new band that I saw on October 1 of that year. My first concert and one of the best. After seeing it I went out and bought the "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" album mainly for this track, although the entire LP is among his best. Until then I'd only had a couple of his albums (and a lot of his 45s). By the end of '75 I had bought all of his albums that I was missing.

“Heart of Glass” by Blondie has a long instrumental fade. “Car Wash” has a long intro.
And although not necessarily long, “99 Luftballons” has 4 instrumental breaks.

You are probably thinking about the the original Lp version (runs 3:45) or the version that 1st appeared on the Best of Blondie Lp in 1981 (runs 4:33). The US singles (runs 3:22) does not have an instrumental ending. The 12" versions (runs 5:50) does not have an instrumental ending either.

While we are on the subject of Blondie songs, the commercial 45 / Lp version of "Rapture" meets the criteria. The radio edit does not.

I believe Gerry Rafferty's "Get It Right (Next Time)" had a long instrumental intro. I mentioned this because I had downloaded that song yesterday. I really enjoy most of his top 40 hits from the late 1970s.
Also, doesn't The Jets' "Rocket 2 U" also have a long instrumental intro? I mean, on the February 20, 1988 show, the song started at the same time Casey started his "Great Radio Stations" plug near the end of the first hour.

"Enter Sandman"'s intro is well over a minute before the vocal kicks in.

Even in its single edit, the instrumental middle section of "Money" by Pink Floyd clocks in at 1:25.
The guitar ending to "No More Lonely Nights" by Paul McCartney lasts 1:12 (through the fade). The musician playing that solo? David Gilmour from Pink Floyd!
