This should help determine the influence our age has on our Top 40 tastes, especially if many people participate.
List your current age, and the five-year period you believe Top 40 music was best.
I will start with mine and update the list here. I hope you'll all express your opinions!
Age 65 - 1965-1969 (Ages 8 through 12) Age 47 - 1980-1984 (Ages 5 through 9) Age 59 - 1978-1982 (Ages 15 through 19) Age 64 - 1969-1973 (Ages 11 through 15) Age 51 - 1982-1986 (Ages 11 through 15) Age 55 - 1983-1987 (Ages 16 through 20) Age 55 - 1978-1982 (Ages 11 through 15) Age 59 - 1974-1978 (Ages 11 through 15) Age 68 - 1968-1972 (Ages 14 through 18) Age 50 - 1979-1983 (Ages 7 through 11) Age 52 - 1978-1982 (Ages 8 through 12) Age 51 - 1979-1983 (Ages 8 through 12) Age ?? - 1983-1987 (??) Age 49 - 1979-1983 (Ages 6 through 10) Age 52 - 1979-1983 (Ages 9 through 13) Age 62 - 1972-1976 (Ages 12 through 16) Age 68 - 1965-1969 (Ages 11 through 15) Age 59 - 1980-1984 (Ages 17 through 21)
Averages
Age 56 - 1977-1981 (Ages 11 through 15)
I had to round off a couple that started and ended in middles of years.
And at the moment, our average years are in the exact middle of the Casey AT40 Era. 1977-1981.

Love this topic! For me, the choice is very similar to yours, the age you were that you felt had the best top 40 years. Age 47 - 1980-1984 (I'd go back to 1978 if I could expand this list. 🙂) ETA: I think many would agree there's a special place for their "soundtrack" from their youth, and as shown so far, pre-teen years. While that's not totally what I feel chrislc is looking for here, I think many will go to this timeframe in their lives. Bias aside, I still feel like the early 1980s had some of the best music, in my whole life to this point.

Yes, I think our answers about this might change as we age, maybe not drastically, but to some extent. I also think we might tend to prefer the Top 40 music from the years we remember most fondly otherwise, but I might be "projecting" there, so I thought this would be interesting to find out.

Unclear on the concept. I'm 64, and I'd pick 1969-73.

Age 51 November 1982 - October 1987
We have a deep affinity for the music we listen to in our early teens, imo.

I hope this isn't considered cheating...
Age now: 55
Favorite five-year period: August '82 thru July '87 (ages 15 - 20 for me, or sophomore year of high school thru sophomore year of college)
I started listening to pop radio a lot more my sophomore year of high school. Other than early 1988 (great three months of music), I thought the last 2 1/2 years of the '80s weren't quite as good as the middle five years.
I don't think this favorite period has fluctuated much over time for me.

Age now: 55 Favorite five-year period: July '78 thru June '83 (ages 11-16) I was already buying 45s by the time I turned 9, so it's tough to keep my window at five years. But over time, I've found that most of my favorite songs came out in the late '70s and early '80s.

I am 59 and I would choose 1974-1978.I dicovered Top 40 radio in late 1973 when I was 10. AT40 was not on local radio here until 1976 on WAKY 790. I didn't know about the show until 1979 when I started listening to it.

I was struggling a bit with that, too...1978 is a no-brainer, but leaving out 1983 and 1984 was a deal-breaker for me; they won out over 1978 and 1979...only by the thinnest air particle one can find.

Age 68 - 1969 - 1973 (Ages 15 through 19) 1971 is my sweet spot, especially the summer/fall.
