An Austrian extra: Hans Theessink
In the early 1960´s, the man Bo Diddley described as "one helluva guitar player" was infected by the blues bacillus and it hasn´t let him go until now. Hans Theessink listened to Big Bill Broonzy and Leadbelly on the radio at the time and was "sold" on the spot. After more than 35 years "on the road" Hans Theessink is now an institution in the field of roots music. His soulful interpretations of solo acoustic blues have become his trademark and with his sonorous voice and unmistakable guitar style, the Dutchman and Viennese by choice is in demand worldwide. His tours take him through Europe, North America, Asia and Australia. In the USA - where the blues is at home - Hans, as the only European, is always present at the biggest blues, roots, jazz and folk festivals. He played at the "New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival", the "Chicago Blues Festival", the "Kerville Folk Festival", the "Toronto Soul & Blues Festival", the "Kansas City Blues Jazz Festival", the "King Biscuit Blues Festival", the "Woody Guthrie Festival" and the "St. Louis Blues & Heritage Festival". In 2001 Hans was awarded the "Golden Rathausmann" by the City of Vienna for his merits as a musical ambassador.
Here´s Hans Theessink with "Baby Wants To Boogie":

My Top 28 songs from the 2/22/86 countdown (song titles only, absolute faves in bold): Top 10: How Will I Know, Kyrie, When The Going Gets Tough (The Tough Get Going), Sara, Living In America, The Sweetest Taboo, Life In A Northern Town, Silent Running, That's What Friends Are For #11-20: A Love Bizarre, I'm Your Man, These Dreams, Conga, Russians, The Sun Always Shines On TV #21-30: Stages, Sanctify Yourself, ROCK In The USA*, What You Need, Spies Like Us #31-40: Talk To Me, Say You Say Me, How To Be A Millionaire, Let's Go All The Way, Walk Of Life, Overjoyed, Manic Monday, Rock Me Amadeus * I can only handle a short song right now so here's 2 minutes and 49 seconds of awesome pop/rock from John Mellencamp:
My Top 26 songs (or 25 singles) from the 2/21/76 countdown: Top 10: 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover, Theme From SWAT, You Sexy Thing, Love To Love You Baby, Love Machine, I Write The Songs, All By Myself, Take It To The Limit, Evil Woman #11-20: Love Hurts, December 1963 (Oh What A Night), Wake Up Everybody, Grow Some Funk Of Your Own/I Feel Like A Bullet In The Gun Of Robert Ford*, Dream Weaver, Fanny (Be Tender With My Love) #21-30: Golden Years, Sing A Song, Slow Ride, Convoy, Dream On #31-40: Bohemian Rhapsody, Love Rollercoaster, Only 16, Sweet Love, Love Is The Drug * After this work week, I'll need to decompress by listening to Elton John. Given a two-sided single, I'm featuring both hits here so here's 10 minutes and 15 seconds of the B-side first, then the A-side. I didn't know until I was a senior in high school that Elton was singing, "Grow Some Funk Of Your Own... amigo". I always thought he was singing, "Grow some funk of your own... meatloaf". What was I thinking?!

Yep, I meant Go Home rather than Overjoyed. It has been a long week! But as your buddy, Billy Joel, would sing, "We're only human, we're supposed to make mistakes". (singers: "Only human! Wooh Wooh!).

2/22/86:A-ha - The Sun Always Shines On T.V. Atlantic Starr - Secret Lovers Sade - The Sweetest Taboo Simple Minds - Sanctify Yourself Sting - Russians"Go Home" or "Overjoyed", but definitely "Calling America"Three Top 40 hits that are appropriate to the following story: Wolfgang Fankhauser from Wals (near the city of Salzburg) is back home after his solo Atlantic crossing since last Wednesday evening. Friends and family cheered him at the airport. He was the first Austrian to cross the ocean alone in a rowing boat. Wolfgang Fankhauser arrived at Salzburg Airport almost speechless - speechless because so many friends and family members were waiting for him. And also speechless, because for 57 days on the Atlantic Ocean he was only busy rowing and with himself. On 12/12/19 the Walser rowed away from the Canary Islands. He covered 3,000 nautical miles - 5,500 kilometres - all the way to the Caribbean alone. The constant was the Atlantic. Always at his side also wind - especially crosswind, which often took him off course.
"There have been moments when you´re finished, when you don´t know what´s really going on anymore," Wolfgang Fankhauser ("When The Going Gets Tough ...") described. "But giving up ("Go Home ...") was never a question. The boat has been sold - the proceeds go to the "Childhood Cancer Aid Salzburg". I screamed into the water, I screamed to the heaven. In the lonely times by the ocean you think about everything. About work, about home, how and where you live and that you actually got it really good. On the Atlantic I actually had birds around me every day - even in a storm.", the sportsman said, "But I only saw dolphins twice. And you see whales almost every day. Twice I´ve seen a shark - relatively large." Eight kilos lighter came Fankhauser on 2/8/20 in the port of Antigua in the Caribbean. After 57 days, 13 hours and 49 minutes he lit the welcome torches ("Overjoyed ..."). He is thus the first Austrian to cross the Atlantic in a rowing boat. Bengal fire was also present on his arrival in Salzburg. After arriving at the airport he went to the surprise reception in Großgmain. At his destination he also proposed to his girlfriend ("How Will I Know ..."), who was always connected via satellite phone ("Calling America ..."). Once again, however, Fankhauser wouldn´t cross the Atlantic alone, he believes. But he already has the next project: "This takes me to the desert, to the Sahara and has to do with a bicycle." So, here´s my special " tough"-edition to all tough guys (and all those who maybe want to become one): 2/22/86:Billy Ocean - When The Going Get Tough, The Tough Gets Going Falco - Rock Me AmadeusSurvivor - Burning Heart The Hooters - Day By Day (from the album "Nervous Night" which can happen to you on the open Atlantic Ocean) Whitney Houston - How Will I Know And since this weekend is also carnival weekend I´ll add a " carnival"-edition: 2/22/86:Dire Straits - Walk Of Life James Brown - Living In America John Cougar Mellencamp - R.O.C.K. In The U.S.A. Miami Sound Machine - Conga Sheila E. - A Love Bizarre An Austrian extra: Rolling 60´sCarnival is at its peak and here are the Rollin 60´s with their "Twist Medley" from 1981:

Lou Gramm knows how to sing a song... he's in reserve mode in the first verse, and takes it up just a little bit in the second verse while maintaining control in the second verse. By the end, he lets it all out. I'm glad this gets good airplay today: My Top 24 songs from the 2/28/87 countdown:Top 10: Living On A Prayer, Will You Still Love Me, You Got It All, Somewhere Out There, You Gotta Fight For Your Right To Party, Big Time, Ballerina Girl #11-20: Let's Wait Awhile, Nobody's Fool, I Wanna Go Back, Stop To Love, Open Your Heart, Brand New Lover #21-30: Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now, Change Of Heart, Talk To Me*, Tonight Tonight Tonight, The Final Countdown #31-40: Facts Of Love, Let's Go, We're Ready, Don't Dream It's Over, Midnight Blue, C'Est La Vie * Chico DeBarge gets my 80s Shooda Dun Betr Pick this week. 2/28/87:Billy Idol - Don´t Need A Gun Dead Or Alive - Brand New Lover Eddie Money - I Wanna Go Back Ready For The World - Love You DownREO Speedwagon - That Ain´t Love Leap DayTo bring the tropical year of about 365.25 days in length into line with the calendar year of 365 days in length, an additional day is added every four years. However, since the tropical year is somewhat shorter than 365.25 days, a leap year is occasionally omitted. This is the case for years divisible by 100 (e.g. 1900 and 2100). However, there is also an exception to this rule: years divisible by 400 (e.g. 1600, 2000 and 2400), are leap years. So, a leap year is omitted three times in 400 years. On this occasion, the German-French cultural channel "arte tv" broadcasts the column "One Leap Day - You´re doing the program." Well, I follow this motto and so I deliver an " leap day"-edition. And since February has no guest-hosted show, I choose the 3/ 29/80-show. 3/29/80 (guest-host: Charlie Van Dyke)
Billy Preston & Syreeta - With You I´m Born Again (#29 on 5/31/80) Journey - Anyway You Want It (#29 on 4/12/80)
Pat Benatar - Heartbreaker (#29 on 2/23/80 and 4/5/80) Spinners - Working My Way Back To You/Forgive Me, Girl (#29 on 5/10/80)
Toto - 99 (# 29 on 3/22/80) An Austrian extra: StereofaceThe band Stereoface was founded in 2004 by songwriter Paul Pfleger (son of Ewald Pfleger, guitarist of the band Opus) (vocals, guitar), Benny Musenbichler (drums), Nino Kadletz (guitar) and Thomas Hierzberger (bass). In 2008 the band released their self-titled debut album with Lukas Schneeberger on bass, which for the first time brought the group greater attention, polarizing reviews and praising criticism. Being asked "What´s more important, recognition or success ?" Paul Pfleger replies: "This goes pretty much hand in hand anyway. For me the artistic realization is more important than the economic one, whereby it´s of course cool if you have an income through your music and can live on it in some form. It´s totally difficult, but your own idealism is at the forefront of our minds. We´d be more likely to be on approval." And on the subject of "record companies": "What annoys me most is that the institutions, especially record companies and large media that have money, are no longer willing to take any risks. They´re not willing to bet on anything. This is one explanation why this format thing, the charts and so on are worse than ever. No one leans out of the window anymore. Everybody´s worried about money. If someone bets on a card and it doesn´t come, then he´s off the record company. Nobody does anything anymore, so everyone looks at each other a little 'Aha, that´s the trend now, that´s good now, we want that too'. One format radio station looks at what is played in the neighbouring country and this is how this terrible uniform mash is created. This can´t get much worse. Man isn´t so blunt that it doesn´t get on his nerves." Here are Stereoface with "As The Day Is Long" and Paul & Ewald Pfleger with "Can You Hear It":

Hey, this thread has reached 100 pages! Thanks to everyone who has posted their favorites here. We're still 291 pages behind the Chart Critiques thread but let's see if we can keep this going for another 100 pages. My Top 16 songs from the 3/7/81 countdown (song titles only, absolute faves in bold):Top 10: I Love A Rainy Night, 9 To 5, Woman, Keep On Loving You, The Best Of Times, The Winner Takes It All #11-20: Rapture, The Tide Is High, Same Auld Lang Syne, What Kind Of Fool, Games People Play, Treat Me Right #21-30: While You See A Chance, Ah Leah*#31-40: Just The Two Of Us, Hey Nineteen* Donnie Iris gets my 80s Shooda Dun Betr Pick this week. This song is in the perfect key, and the harmonies are great: My Top 14 songs from the 3/4/72 countdown:Top 10: Without You, Everything I Own, Heart Of Gold, Let's Stay Together, Bang A Gong (Get It On)#11-20: Mother & Child Reunion, Jungle Fever, A Horse With No Name#21-30: Anticipation, Day After Day, Runnin' Away*, Black Dog#31-40: Roundabout, In The Rain * Sly & The Family Stone gets my 70s Shooda Dun Betr Pick this week. If anyone hasn't noticed after five years of my reviews, I love me some horns! Trumpets, saxophones, trombones (former trombone player here) can instantly elevate a tune. The horns here are somewhat subdued until the end which gives this tune a cool vibe. Plus, the guitar riff at the end is way cool!
