In 1990 singer Georg Ferstl died unexpectedly during the recordings for the first album. The band decided not to continue and disbanded. My Top 28 songs from the 3/12/83 countdown (song titles only, lots of absolute faves in bold): Top 10: Billie Jean, Shame on The Moon, Do You Really Want To Hurt Me, Hungry Like The Wolf, Back On The Chain Gang, You Are, Separate Ways #11-20: All of 'em! One On One, All Right, Mr. Roboto, Twilight Zone, Down Under, I Know There's Something Going On, Allentown, Fall In Love With Me, Breaking Us In Two, Come On Eileen #21-30: I've Got A Rock & Roll Heart, Your Love Is Driving Me Crazy, Der Kommissar, On The Loose, Jeopardy, Goody Too Shoes, Little Too Late #31-40: Lies, You Can't Hurry Love, Change Of Heart, Don't Tell Me You Love Me* * Yay, my 80s Shooda Dun Betr Pick is a tune that peaked at #40... which is incredible that Night Ranger only got to #40 with this tune given the airplay it gets today. This song only reached #46 on Cashbox. Meanwhile, Neil Diamond was spending his fourth consecutive week at #35 with "I'm Alive"... whose airplay today is dead. Go figure...
My Top 23 songs from the 3/16/74 countdown: Top 10: Seasons In The Sun, Dark Lady, Sunshine On My Shoulders, The Way We Were, Mockingbird, Jungle Boogie, Spiders & Snakes, Jet* #11-20: Eres Tu, Bennie & The Jets, Come & Get Your Love, Hooked On A Feeling, Love's Theme, Until You Come Back To Me, The Lord's Prayer** #21-30: TSOP, Rock & Roll Hoochie Koo, Looking For A Love #31-40: Last Time I Saw Him, You're Sixteen, Just Don't Want To Be Lonely, I'll Have To Say I Love You In A Song, Let Me Be There * Paul McCartney gets my pick hit this week. I never really knew what the song was about after hearing this a gazillion times (and loving it each time). He kept a puppy named Jet who was the runt of the litter, so just by Paul keeping a dog like that... props to him! But this song is about how he found his wife's father to be a little intimidating. Hmmm, interesting. Having said that, I just love singing along to this tune, especially the part that goes, " Ah Mater, want Jet to always love me.."
** Because I'm Catholic and it's Lent, I have to play "The Lord's Prayer" as an extra. Hey, Sr. Janet Mead ties for the biggest gainer on this week's 70s countdown show, moving up 11 notches to #20. Yay God, and yay 1974 music stations for playing this!

[...] Maybe trekkielo has the Coronavirus . Anyhoo, here's one of the best tunes ever to peak at #40 on Billboard: [...] Breaking News:Due to the coronavirus: As of 3/11/2020, 12 am, all outdoor events with more than 500 visitors and indoor events with more than 100 visitors are officially prohibited in Austria. This also applies to private celebrations of this size. This measure lasts at least until the beginning of April. This affects concerts by Avril Lavigne and James Blunt, among others.

And there I spontaneously came up with a song that I still like very much since its release in 1981. 1981, that was the time when "Funkytown" was over again, Abba had their last big hit with "Super Trouper" and Visage created a mystical atmosphere with "Fade To Grey". In Austria, Cosmetics, a studio band from Vienna, was a real insider tip. And not to be forgotten in their song "Hello Man" is the saxophone solo played by the woman Dietlind Schöbitz. Here are " Cosmetics" with "Hello Man" (song starts at position 0:42):

So I'm working form home for the next three weeks due to the Coronavirus outbreak (I'm healthy!). Given some extra time on my hands... My Top 35 songs from the 3/25/84 countdown... with a bonus (ranked by stars plus why the others didn't make the cut):5 stars: Girls Just Want To Have Fun (#3), I Want A New Drug (#6), 99 Luftballoons (#7), Miss Me Blind (#14), Nobody Told Me (#19), Give It Up (#21), Radio Ga-Ga (#25), New Song (#28), They Don't Know (#30)*, Let The Music Play (#32), Tonight (#34), Don't Answer Me (#35), Leave It (37)4 1/2 stars: Jump (#1), Automatic (#8), Thriller (#11), Against All Odds (#12), The Runner (#22), Wrapped Around Your Finger (#23), Come Back & Stay (#27), You Might Think (#39), The Kid's American (#40) 4 stars: Somebody's Watching Me (#2), Footloose (#4), Here Comes The Rain Again (#5), Adult Education (#9), Got A Hold On Me (#10), Hold Me Now (#15), New Moon On Monday (#16), Hello (#17), Eat It (#18), Karma Chameleon (#24), Girls (#29), Love Somebody (#33), Red Red Wine (#36) Not making the favorites cut: 3 stars: Language Of Love (#13): Good song with a memorable intro/lead-in but the verses were always hard for me to recall; Livin' In Desperate Times (#31): Good song, liked it more in '84 but it sounds dated today. Decent melody in the verses but I don't care for the chorus jumping keys. 2 1/2 stars: Back Where You Belong (#20): Perfectly adequate tune. "What If I'd Been The One", .38 Special's previous release, was in the same key and at a faster tempo so maybe that made me think this song was somewhat of a tried-sounding re-tread. 2 stars: "Don't Let Go" (#38): This song needs a more prominent bass line and meatier percussion... it's kinda lightweight. 1 1/2 stars: Let's Stay Together (#26): This is one of those songs that is owned by the original singer (I love Al Green's version) so anyone singing this would pale in comparison. Having said that, the key that Tina's version is in doesn't mesh with the hopefulness of the song. I think Tina oversings this a little bit. The saxophones don't fit in with the song. I'm surprised this was the first release from her "Private Dancer" album. It's not awful but if this started playing on my radio, I would change it. * Tracey Ullman gets my 80s Why Doesn't This Top 10 Hit Get Any Recurrent Airplay Pick this week. I love the girl group/retro feel of this song. And was anyone else driven a little crazy (in a good way) with Tracey's mole above her lip in the video? I'll also admit to air female background singing on this one back in '84 : My Top 29 songs from the 3/26/77 countdown (song titles only, absolute faves in bold... and just the favorites for this show):
5 stars: Don't Leave Me This Way (#5), Night Moves (#7), Maybe I'm Amazed (#11), I've Got Love On My Mind (#12), Carry On Wayward Son (#13), So Into You (#14), Go Your Own Way (#18), Crackerbox Palace (#19), The First Cut Is The Deepest (#27), Year Of The Cat (#31), Lido Shuffle (#32)*, At Midnight (My Love Will Life You Up) (#33), Couldn't Get It Right (#37)4 1/2 stars: Love Theme From A Star Is Born (#2), Dancing Queen (#3), Fly Like An Eagle (#6), The Things We Do For Love (#8), Torn Between Two Lovers (#10), Southern Nights (#16), Hotel California (#17), Do Ya (#25), Free (#28), Blinded By The Light (#29), When I Need You (#35) 4 stars: Rich Girl (#1), Don't Give Up On Us (#4), Right Time Of The Night (#21), Sam (#22), Disco Lucy (#30) * Boz Scaggs gets my 70s Shooda Dun Beter Pick this week. Yes, he fell just one notch shy of hitting the Top 10 and this gets good airplay today. Still... how was this not a Top 10 hit (ditto Carry On Wayward Son and Barracuda which also peaked at #11 in '77)? Awesome horns, very catchy melody... this is one fantastic tune!

3/24/84:Dan Fogelberg - The Language Of Love Kool & The Gang - Tonight Lionel Richie - HelloMatthew Wilder - The Kid´s American The Alan Parsons Project - Don´t Answer Me Thank YouIn the context of the current measures due to the corona crisis, a great deal of attention is currently being paid to 24-hour care, as many caregivers are unable to return from their countries. For this reason, former civilian servicemen are used for these professions so that people don´t lose their support from one day to the next. More than 2,500 former civilian servicemen between the ages of 18 and 24 have already volunteered. Especially for these volunteers, here´s an edition that is all too familiar even to this generation: 3/24/84:Cyndi Lauper - Girls Just Want To Have Fun Kenny Loggins - Footloose Michael Jackson - Thriller Nena - 99 Luftballons Van Halen - Jump An Austrian extra: ZenitExactly twice a year, when the equinoxes prevail at all points on earth, the sun is at its zenith above the equator. Among the Austrian extras " Zenit" stands for a jazz-rock-band, which was founded in 1976 by Willi Langer from Krems (Lower Austria). For a long time hardly anyone was interested in Zenit´s special music. Until band founder Willi Langer from Krems received a phone call a few years ago: A record company wanted to re-press an album. "I didn´t take the first call seriously. But then other companies called who wanted to do this. Because countless people from many countries as far away as Japan asked for these records,", says Langer. So Langer discussed the matter with co-founder Hannes Treiber. In the end, they finally awarded the contract to a young Viennese company, Edition Hawara. The new press was sold within a few weeks," says Treiber, who, like Langer, is delighted about the interest in " Zenit". From 1986 here are "Zenit" with "Colours In My Head":

Bravo
The big issue at the moment is the Corona crisis. Social contacts should be avoided as much as possible, events don´t take place and planned holidays must be cancelled. The team of the youth magazine "Bravo" has therefore asked itself how it can make a contribution to make these difficult times a little more beautiful. Therefore, absolutely individual issues are available for free download. And to ensure that every generation gets something out of it, there is an issue from each year (currently from 1956 to 1994). In the free edition of 1986 you can find a contribution to Falco´s current single "Jeanny", which can be found on the album "Falco 3": "Ex-commissioner Falco triggers a riddle among his fans with his new single. Is this a crime ? On the cover a lonely, red high heel shoe on rain-wet glittering headstone pavement. (...) Everything points to a kidnapping or worse. (...) More is not betrayed however, Falco wants to increase the tension and has baptized the title "Jeanny, part 1". On the cover text of the single he reveals that he created the riddle about Jeanny as a trilogy. (...) Privately, Falco has already found his happiness. His girlfriend Isabella, whom he met in the summer of 1985, is expecting a baby, which is expected to be born in March 1986 in Vienna."
And this brings me to my "well-known"-edition for this week:
3/29/86:
Elton John - Nikita Falco - Rock Me Amadeus Opus - Live Is Life Prince & The Revolution - Kiss The Bangles - Manic Monday
An Austrian extra: Manuel Ortega
A few days ago this year´s Eurovision Songconest was also cancelled due to the Corona crisis. In 2002, the Upper Austrian Manuel Ortega (actually Manuel Hanke) joined the 46. Eurovision Song Contest in Tallinn with the song "Say A Word". Shortly after the song was released, accusations of plagiarism (similarity to Free´s "All Right Now") were raised, but these were refuted by an expert opinion: The accusation of plagiarism is therefore rejected, as intellectual theft was not intentionally committed. To submit an intentional plagiarism for the Song Contest would be "very shortsighted and stupid". However, "three out of fourteen notes" are similar to "All Right Now'.
Here now is Manuel Ortega with "Say A Word":
