Favorites from 7/19/86, typed as I sit in Dania Beach casino's music venue waiting for Men W/o Hats to take the stage. Howard Jones to follow. Giddyup. No One Is To Blame (of course) [...] Howard Jones enters the Top 40 with "Life In One Day" at #35 on 8/3/85. He sings "The grass is never greener over there". Now, if you swap "never" for "always" and combine it with the summer of 1983 (apparently a summer 80sat40fan likes to remember) you get one of the greatest hits of the 80s. Produced in 1983 and charted in 1984 it´s Nik Kershaw with his smash "Wouldn´t It Be Good".
Here are Howard Jones & Nik Kershaw with "Wouldn´t It Be Good": And now there must be room for the original:

^^ Excellent selection, listenerwants2know ! While this is the third time in 9 weeks we're getting 1985, I'll do this review with a twist... I'll list my faves along with simple reasons why those which didn't make the cut were left off. I'll do the '70 show as is. My Top 29 songs from the 8/3/85 show by group ranking:5 stars (outstanding... the songs I would normally bold): Shout, Bang A Gong (Get It On), A View To A Kill*, Freeway Of Love, People Are People, Summer of '69, You Spin Me Round (Like A Record), Voices Carry, Would I Lie To You, Invincible, Find A Way 4 1/2 stars (excellent): If You Love Somebody Set Them Free, You Give Good Love, Glory Days, Raspberry Beret, What About Love, We Don't Need Another Hero, You're Only Human, Pop Life 4 stars (very good): Every Time You Go Away, Never Surrender, The Power Of Love, St. Elmo's Fire (Man In Motion), Sussudio, The Search Is Over, Don't Lose My Number, Cherish, Life In One Day, Freedom ... and now the 11 songs which didn't make the favorite cut... 3 1/2 stars (good songs, just not favorites): Who's Holding Donna Now (have to be in the right mood, like an A/C mood), 19 (really liked it at the time, now good... would seem jarring to have this in rotation on radio today), Not Enough Love In The World (good mid-tempo hit but needed a slightly stronger verse melody), I Wonder If I Take You Home (hated this song in '85 but like it now) 3 stars (solid... worthy of airplay today): Rock Me Tonight (like Donna, I have to be in the right mood to feel this one), Just As I Am (would have charted higher in '80 or '81), Dare Me (good chorus but the verses don't seem to connect with the chorus), Smokin' In The Boys Room (solid remake but doesn't add a whole lot to the original) 2 1/2 stars (OK, nothing special): Sentimental Street (maybe because it's in the key of C major that this song does nothing for me... it's sounds tired at times), Mystery Lady (no real hook to get me into this song) 2 stars (weak): State Of The Heart (sounds dated, no real hook) So I would be happy if 37 of these songs were in some rotation on 80s on 8 or similar stations. That's very good! * Duran Duran gets my 80s Pick Hit this week. I love the percussion in this tune! My Top 14 songs from the 8/1/70 show:Top 10: (They Long To Be) Close To You, Make It With You, Mama Told Me (Not To Come), Signed Sealed Delivered (I'm Yours), The Love You Save, Spill The Wine, Tighter & Tighter, Ooh Child#11-20: Ride Captain Ride, War #21-30: In The Summertime, Get Up I Feel Like Being A S@x Machine*#31-40: Mississippi Queen, 25 Or 6 To 4* I'm gonna play my 70s Pick Hit right now... I'm gonna play my 70s Pick Hit right now... but I don't want James Brownto hit it and quit it :

And the alphabet has 5 vocals. So, in August 2019 I have 5 different Austrian extras. That´s not new, but each of the 5 bands starts with a different vocal. Let´s go back to the 70s and start with an " Austrian A": An Austrian extra: AcidThe later Falco producer and organist Robert Ponger, bassist Herbert Novacek and drummer Rudi Staeger founded the band Acid in Vienna in 1971. They met precisely the spirit of the early 70s. The genesis of the first single "Hipguard" is probably not everyday. The three musicians played in a video clip in different costumes the fright ghosts of a caretaker. The clip was broadcast in a TV series and the song "Hipguard" became Acid´s first hit single. And in 1974 Acid released their first album called " Acid" with the single "Six To Seven": from my musical category "daydreamer"My motto: "Not always the often heard hits."

My Top 22 songs from the 8/9/75 countdown (song titles only, absolute faves in bold):Top 10: Jive Talkin', I'm Not In Love, One Of These Nights, Someone Saved My Life Tonight, Rhinestone Cowboy, Why Can't We Be Friends, How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You), The Rockford Files #11-20: The Hustle, Listen To What The Man Said, Fallin' In Love, Love Will Keep Us Together, Fight The Power, At 17 #21-30: Get Down Tonight*, Feel Like Makin' Love, Could It Be Magic, That's The Way Of The World, The Way We Were, Ballroom Blitz#31-40: Fame, Send In The Clowns* I'm feeling funky today so how about the long version of KC & The Sunshine Band's first chart topper? Here you go... My Top 17 songs from the 8/16/80 countdown:Top 10: Magic, Sailing, Take Your Time (Do It Right)*, Upside Down, It's Still Rock & Roll To Me, Shining Star, Little Jeannie #11-20: Coming Up, Fame, Misunderstanding, Into The Night #21-30: All Out Of Love, Boulevard, Cocaine #31-40: In America, You'll Accomp'ny Me, Don't Ask Me Why * I'm feeling funky today so how about the long version of the S.O.S. Band's first big hit? Here you go... Bonus: If there are a lot of things going in the world which stink (everything's fine personally ... just talking about world events and stuff), a song that gets me back in the right frame of mind is Stevie Wonder's "Love's In Need Of Love Today". I love it when The Groove on Sirius/XM has no problem playing KC & The Sunshine Band or David Bowie... yet Billboard's country staff won't recognize Lil Nas X's tune as being country enough for its own country chart. It stinks that a bunch of people were killed in El Paso and Dayton this past weekend. The Democrats want to take away everyone's guns, yet the Republicans think it's fine for ordinary citizens to have 100s of rounds of ammunition to use anytime, anywhere. Can our politicians get on the same page and work together to ensure our future, please?! And can the higher-ups at Billboard find a better way to track America's favorite tunes so that we don't have somewhat better than mediocre tunes spending 18 weeks at #1?! So please allow this 52 year old to play an album cut from one of the greatest albums ever made. Now, Billboard would probably try telling me I should be listening to Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bryan Adams or Hootie & The Blowfish...

8/16/80 (A):Air Supply - All Out Of LoveBilly Joel - Dont Ask Me Why Electric Light Orchestra - All Over The World Eric Clapton & His Band - Tulsa Time/Cocaine Rocky Burnette - Tired Of Toein´ The Line 8/6/88 (B):Breathe - Hands To HeavenHuey Lewis & The News - Perfect World Moody Blues - I Know You´re Out There Somewhere Taylor Dayne - I´ll Always Love YouTracy Chapman - Fast CarAn Austrian extra: EspressoIn October 1985 five young music-loving friends sat in a cafe in their hometown St. Pölten (capital of Lower Austria) and decided to found their own band. The only thing missing was the name. It came from the inscription on a coffee machine - Espresso. A truly strong and invigorating name. And so Christian Deix, Silvio Berger, Oliver Jung, Bernhard Moshammer and Bernhard Aigelsreither, all born in St. Pölten, entered the Austrian music scene. It all started in the "cuckoo´s nest", where they had their first live performance in front of 320 enthusiastic spectators. It followed still some appearances, until the first record company became attentive. So, the first single "Say" was created in the Music-Pool- Austria. This started an increasing demand for the group and the associated obligations were already burdening Bernhard Aigelsreither too much. His professional career didn´t allow him to get so involved. This cleared the way for Mario Berger in St. Pölten as well. His entry came with the single "Take It All Down", which was nominated for the Pop Amadeus in 1987. The next prank was initiated by the UNO, which ordered the next single "Five Billion" on the occasion of the birth of the five billionth person on earth. After that, there was an increase in Espresso. Christian "Gigi" Skokan joined the group to improve the sound. This was the starting signal for a great high-altitude flight. He wasn´t so measurable with "Don´t Let Me Down" yet, but with the follow-up single "Why Don´t You Listen To My Music" they advanced to #12 in the Austrian charts in the summer of 1989. Their live performances and their support acts at Level 42, James Brown, Roger Chapman and the Beach Boys were especially fulminant. From 1989, here are Espresso with "Why Don´t You Listen To My Music":
from my musical category "daydreamer" My motto: "Not always the often heard hits."
