[...] Vacation bonus (because if listenerwants2know can have bonus picks, so can I ): How about another song each from Jane Wiedlin and America? From the summer of '83, here is Jane Wiedlin & Sparks with "Cool Places", and America with "Sandman". Neither song hit the Top 40 but should have: [...]
Vacation Greetings from Europe. More music - more variety: Here are two real summer (Euro) classics from Italy and from the summer of 1983:
Righeira - Vamos A La Playa Stefano Rota and Stefano Righi deal in the song with the effects of the pollution of the Mediterranean Sea and the consequences of a nuclear war during the Cold War. The song is regarded by many as a model for summer-heavy pop music and as the prototype of a representative of the Italo Disco genre, although the lyrics were sung in Spanish. An interview with the Pet Shop Boys in 2007, in which they describe the significance of the song and the current of Italo Disco for their own work, shows just how stylistically influential the number was. Gazebo - I Like Chopin A real love song, although rather unusual for the so-called "Italo disco" genre due to the unforgettable piano melody. And while we´re on the subject of Italy, two more performers must not be missing: Gianna Nannini - Bello E Impossibile Born in 1954 in Siena as the daughter of a traditional confectioner´s family, she soon had Janis Joplin as her role model. Her brother Alessandro, who was successful in motorsport in the 1980s and 1990s, now runs his parents´ company, Gruppo Nannini. In 1986 Gianna reached #1 in Italy and #7 in Austria with "Bello E Impossibile": "The stars turn in the night and I think of you full of desire." Eros Ramazotti - Piu Bella Cosa Eros Ramazotti dedicated this love song to his swarm Michelle Hunziker. A few months later he and Michelle had their daughter Aurora Sophie. Three months later he published his song "L´aurora" and dedicated it to his daughter. A year later he married Michele Hunziker. The marriage didn´t last, but the love song is still beautiful. "Singing only of love is never enough, and it doesn´t help much. To tell you again, to tell you that there´s nothing more beautiful, I don´t think he´s any prettier than you. Unique as you are and infinite if you want. Thank you for being here." Eros Ramazotti won the category "Newcomer of the Year" at the famous San Remo Festival in 1984. Apropos San Remo Festival: On 2/6/1987 the band "Cutting Crew" sang their #1 smash "I Just Died In Your Arms" at the 37th San Remo Festival after they were called "Cathering Crew" by a controlor ( more details on the 5/2/87-show). And "Cutting Crew" can also be admired live this year: Together with Marc Almond, Steve Norman & Ross William Wild (Spandau Ballet), Carol Decker (T´Pau), Wet Wet Wet Wet, Howard Jones and DJ Rusty Egan (Visage) they will perform at the International Consumer Electronics Fair (IFA) in Berlin on 9/7/2019.
... and the countdown continues ...

Fun and laughter on our summer holiday, No more worries for me or you, For a week or two." More than once Sir Cliff Richard mentioned that in his many years on stage there were exactly two languages with which he always had a hard time - Japanese and German. Now, what idiom does my language calendar have for this week ? "In rank and file". Okay, here are - "in rank and file" - my candidates for my current " summer"-edition: 7/9/88 (A):Belinda Carlisle - Circle In The Sand Billy Ocean - The Colour Of LoveChicago - I Don´t Wanna Live Without Your Love Climie Fisher - Love Changes Everything The Fat Boys & Chubby Checker - The Twist 7/18/81 (B):Gary U.S. Bonds - This Little Girl John Schneider - It´s Now Or Never Sheena Easton - Modern Girl Stars on 45 - Medley The Pointer Sisters - Slow HandAn Austrian extra: Deja VuIn 1984 the quartet Deja Vu was formed in the Rhine Valley (Vorarlberg). Singer Christine Nachbauer, who was already in a country band before, on the formation of the band: "The country band was primarily a live band, I earned my first spurs there, but I also got hungry there. But it was this constant reproduction, these re-singing of covers, that at some point prompted me to search and find myself. Later I worked together with a keyboarder who already composed, arranged and wrote lyrics and I liked the way a song like that was written and the exciting thing was already then to put my voice on new songs which were still not published. And we did two-part singing at the time and that reminded me a bit of ABBA."
In 1987 Deja Vu reached her first chart position with "Nighttime Princess": And a year later, "Lonesome Town" followed: from my musical category "daydreamer"My motto: "Not always the often heard hits."

With all of our regulars casting their votes for 7/9/88, it looks like 39 out of 40 were liked by at least one person. The only song not named? "Trouble" by Nia Peeples. Somehow, if 32 or 35 songs are named favorites, I don't feel bad for the few who don't get named but when it's just one song... awwwwww, poor Nia.

Listening to that song on the show yesterday, I thought, "Wow, this song really does suck." Dance songs get a lot of slack from me. If it's got some energy and anything close to a decent beat I can live with it. This one doesn't. I'm assuming it made the 40 mainly on the strength of Nia Peeples' TV popularity. And what's with the abrupt end to the song?

^^ Interesting to note that "Trouble" failed to hit the Top 40 on Radio & Records as well as Cashbox. A 1986 show again?! 1975 again?! I'm not feeling either countdown this week. So given that it's vacation time for many, how about a "very special episode" of 80sat40fan's countdown mini-critiques? This may go over as well as the #1 songs from the last 40 years of Independence Day show ... To replace my faves list from the 7/18/75 countdown, I bring you my absolute faves only from this week's charts from 1965 - 1969...7/17/65: "Satisfaction"/The Rolling Stones, "I Can't Help Myself"/The Four Tops, "Wooly Bully"/Sam The Sham & The Pharaohs 7/16/66: "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me"/Dutry Springfield, "Paperback Writer"/The Beatles, "Paint It Black"/The Rolling Stones, "I Am A Rock"/Sion & Garfunkel, "Hold On I'm Comin'"/Sam & Dave 7/15/67: "Light My Fire"/The Doors, "Respect"/Aretha Franklin 7/20/68: "This Guy's In Love With You"/Herb Alpert, "The Horse"/Cliff Nobles & Co., "Classical Gas"/Mason Williams, "Hello I Love You"/The Doors, "MacArthur Park"/Richard Harris (guilty pleasure), "Sunshine Of Your Love"/Cream, "Think"/Aretha Franklin, "Mrs. Robinson"/Simon & Garfunkel, "Born To Be Wild"/Steppenwolf 7/19/69: "Spinning Wheel"/Blood Sweat & Tears, "What Does It Take"/Jr. Walker & The All-Stars*, "One"/Three Dog Night, "The Ballad Of John & Yoko"/The Beatles, "My Cherie Amour"/Stevie Wonder, "Bad Moon Rising"/CCR, "Get Back"/The Beatles, "Grazin' In The Grass"/Friends Of Distinction * Jr. Walker & The All-Stars get my 60s Pick Hit this week. 7/19/86:
38 Special - Like No Other Night Andy Taylor - Take It Easy Simply Red - Holding Back The Years The Fixx - Secret Separation Wham! - The Edge Of Heaven
Summer holiday (part 2)
In the spring of 1986 Lucien Witteveen and Sven van Veen met in a discotheque in Hilversum. Suddenly Madonna´s "Holiday" was on and both decided to turn this song and Cliff Richard´s "Summer Holiday" into a rap:
"We are going on a summerholiday If you want to go, yo, Sven We´re going to London and New York City And we take a little piece of Amsterdam (Right!)"
For the release Witteveen got the pseudonym MC Miker G and van Veen the pseudonym DJ Sven. The song "Holiday Rap" reached #9 in Canada and #2 in Austria. And this brings me to my "summer"-edition for this week:
7/19/86:
Gavin Christopher - One Step Closer To You Genesis - Invisible Touch Jeffrey Osborne - You Should Be Mine Rod Stewart - Love Touch The Outfield - All The Love In The World
An Austrian extra: The More Or The Less
When he makes music, he takes one of his 14 guitars, and one of his great role models is Eric Clapton. Tobias Pötzelsberger, today full-time editor for Austrian domestic politics and also television presenter, produced the debut album "We, the People" together with Frank Wendtner (piano), Hannes Gappmaier (drums) and Martin Mörth (bass) in 2009. Many of the songs are based on little stories from everyday life, such as "Ms Anderson", which was created by the sight of a crying driver:
For Tobias Pötzelsberger, the best songs express strong emotions, emotion is simply important when making music. As an emotionally cold person, he would never succeed in writing a song. Three years after the first album "Keep Calm" was released in 2012. It won the "Heimo-Erbse-Prize" which is very popular in the local pop scene. From this album here´s "When We Happen To Collide":
from my musical category "daydreamer" My motto: "Not always the often heard hits."

He sings this in a very heartfelt manner, and the key change absolutely works here: Bonus: Apparently, trekkielo didn't care that some of us rated countdowns other the '75 and '86 last week as a few of us are missing his weekly "like". I am therefore guaranteeing myself two weeks without a trekkielo "like" as I am highlighting two songs from his favorite artists that were peaking on the 7/28/84 and 7/28/73 Hot 100... below the Top 40 . HA! Peaking at #50 on the 7/28/84 Hot 100, here's Genesis with "Taking It All Too Hard", and peaking at #42 on the 7/28/73 Hot 100, here is ELO with "Roll Over Beethoven" (for not making AT40, I'm only featuring the single edit). Sorry, trekkielo : EDIT: trekkielo fooled me and liked this post! Whoodathunk?
