Assumption of Mary, Ferragosto, Woodstock and a long, long weekend
Assumption of Mary is a bank holiday in Austria and for many holidaymakers also the end of the holiday season. But as this holiday falls on a Thursday this year, many will extend their holiday until Sunday. Another very important bank holiday is Assumption of Mary in Italy, where it is called " Ferragosto". The 15th of August is considered the hottest day of the summer in Italy and thus marks the "turning point of the summer". Around this day the Italians of today plan their holidays, mostly in their own country, where it is cool: by the sea or in the mountains. This is why many Italians understand " Ferragosto" as the entire holiday they take around 8/15. This period is to be regarded almost as a holiday period ordered by the state. Almost the entire administrative and economic life comes to a standstill. Now, let´s take a little musical trip to Italy: On 9/4/82 the late Laura Branigan entered the Top 40 at #39 with "Gloria". Here´s the original from Italy: And here´s another very well-known song with its original in Italy: Also on this (long) weekend the legendary Woodstock-Festival celebrates its 50th anniversary. And among the 32 performers there was an artist who sang a nice cover version of "Summer In The City" decades later. From 1994 here´s the late Joe Cocker with his version of "Summer In The City": That´s Joe Cocker, who also sang the title "You Can Leave Your Hat On" from the movie "9 1/2 weeks". Now, more than 9 1/2 weeks ago is a show in which a woman hosted the American Top 40. And on the occasion of a bank holiday here is this special (guest-hosted) show as an encore: 4/16/88 (guest-host: Keri Tombazian):Aerosmith - Angel Billy Ocean - Get Outta My Dreams, Get Into My Car Bruce Springsteen - One Step UpDef Leppard - Hysteria Natalie Cole - Pink Cadillac An Austrian extra: Irie Rocker AllstarsA band from Graz, the Styrian capital and second largest city in Austria after Vienna, who were able to enter the single charts with reggae and summer feeling music. From 2014 here are the "Irie Rocker Allstars" with "Everyday Good": from my musical category "daydreamer"My motto: "Not always the often heard hits."

It's 1:20 pm on Sat and I've already listened to most of the '82 and '86 shows. I rarely put in such an effort to catch both shows, mainly 'cause it's rare Premiere pairs two good shows. Also, that's a lot of AT 40 listening considering I woke up around 8.
Favorites from the '86 show:
Mad About You Two Of Hearts Baby Love Walk This Way Higher Love Venus All The Love In The World We Don't Have To Take Our Clothes Off Sweet Freedom Sledgehammer Digging Your Scene Man Size Love Nasty Dancing On The Ceiling Don't Forget Me (When I'm Gone)
HM: The Edge Of Heaven, Opportunities, Taken In, Love Zone, That Was Then, This Is Now, Love Touch
Favorites from the '82 show:
Let Me Tickle Your Fancy Jack And Diane Kids In America Don't You Want Me Someday, Someway Hot In The City Let It Whip Tainted Love Who Can It Be Now Think I'm In Love Only The Lonely Rosanna Abracadabra Vacation Only Time Will Tell

I hated this song when it first premiered but did a 180 on it during its chart run. Fantastic percussion and great synths on this one:
My Top 28 songs from the 8/27/77 countdown: Top 10: Best Of My Love, I Just Want To Be Your Everything, (Your Love Has Lifted Me) Higher & Higher, Easy, Handy Man, Whatcha Gonnna Do, Just A Song Before I Go, Don't Stop, Strawberry Letter 23 #11-20: I'm In You, Barracuda, Telephone Line, Smoke From A Distant Fire, Give A Little Bit, Black Betty, Cold As Ice #21-30: On & On, Swayin' To The Music, Keep It Comin' Love, You & Me, Christine Sixteen #31-40: Undercover Angel, Slide*, You Made Me Believe In Magic, My Heart Belongs To Me, Star Wars Theme/Cantina Band, Nobody Does It Better, Boogie Nights * Slave gets my 70s Pick Hit with a song that should have peaked way higher than #32. 8/27/83:Electric Light Orchestra - Rock´n Roll Is King Frank Stallone - Far From Over Men At Work - It´s A Mistake Rita Coolidge - All Time High Spandau Ballet - TrueI´m really glad to be able to report with my 1,000th post the known and the new of the most internationally known band from Austria. An Austrian extra: OpusThanks to the well maintained website www.opus.at/home.php?lang=4, where you can also subscribe to a newsletter, it´s not necessary to provide general information here. But there´s still room here for little stories. In the early 80s Ewald Pfleger from Judendorf (Styria) organized numerous events in the German-speaking area, the fees amount to a few thousand Austrian shillings per evening. Opus travel with an old, converted coach. At a concert in Hamburg, for example, Opus place their coach near a well-known hotel, have them drive to the hotel by taxi after their performance and then sneak to the coach. Experiences of a young, wild band, who doesn´t want to miss any of the band members afterwards. Help for suitable clubs, in which one can appear, comes from Klaus Eberhartinger and his band "Erste Allgemeine Verunsicherung" ( at40fg.proboards.com/post/149663). From this early period of Opus a song with her favorite number - "Eleven": Opus have had contact with Falco again and again. Already in 1984 they can be heard as background choir in Falco´s "Junge Römer" ("Young Romans"): On 6/29/1985 Opus and Falco play "Flyin´ High" together at the legendary concert at the stadium Graz-Liebenau: Opus and Falco also exchange information at the time of their success in America. While Falco is mainly on promotion in New York, Opus are starting their American tour (together with Stevie Nicks) from Texas. The origins of "Live Is Life" are in a planned concert in Oberwart (Burgenland) for an album called " Opus Live". But the title is "a bit too little concise", because people should be able to sing, dance and clap along with this song. So, the title "Live Is Life" is created on the island of Ibiza. First there is an "audition" in St. Gallen (in the north of Styria at the border to Upper Austria). The next day Oberwart (Burgenland) follows and there the single is not created at first go. Producer Werner Müller records the concert, "Live Is Life" is in the middle of the setlist. While the encores and parts of the audience had already left, Producer Müller comes up with the hint that "Live Is Life" has to be played again, because the tape had to be changed at this point. The song is recorded a second time, is already known to the remaining audience (hence a better mood) and is now really recorded. Worldwide, "Live Is Life" is played between 300 and 400 times a day today (higher the number of Internet streams). Almost every day there are requests for "Live Is Life", including funny ones like the one from an author who wants to quote the passage "na na na na na" in an erotic thriller. Opus are also present at the El DeBarge hit "Who´s Johnny" at the Los Angeles studio. The reason is producer Peter Wolf, who also wrote the song. Opus are currently in Los Angeles for a week, promoting their American tour and going daily from Sunset Boulevard to Polygram. Impressive is the experience that "Live Is Life" is also so well known "on the other side of the world" (for example at two concerts with 30,000 visitors each in Chile). In April of 2019, Prince Albert invites Opus to the "Tribute to Grace Kelly" in Monte Carlo with more than 700 invited guests such as Shirley Bassey, Latoya Jackson, Linda Evans, Patrick Duffy, Precious Wilson and Plastic Bertrand. Two days before the event Opus receive the dress code "black, dark blue or anthracite, but by no means brown" (reminds me personally of the requirement "no brown after six"). The four buy "big buys" in and around Graz, presumably so much that they can now "use a suitable suit from brunch in the morning until the early evening", as Günther Grassmuck laughingly puts it. Five years Opus haven´t released a new song. But now with "Halfway Done" there is finally a new single available. 32 years after their hit "Whiteland", which they wrote for Greenpeace at that time (even the entire proceeds from the sale of this single went to Greenpeace), Opus again dedicate themselves to environmental protection. Inspired by the "Fridays for Future"-movement they want to support the fight against the climate crisis at least musically with this catchy song. In the video they have also included scenes of demonstrations of the "Fridays for Future" movement in Graz. As a personal contribution to climate protection, Opus calls for the abandonment of vehicles and aircraft wherever possible. "Halfway Done" is also the harbinger of a new album, which is currently called "Opus Magnum" and is scheduled for release in 2020. Mastermind and guitarist Ewald Pfleger, singer Herwig Rüdisser, keyboarder Kurt-René Plisnier and drummer Günter Grasmuck are fully motivated and working on new material in the studio. However, previously unreleased live recordings are also planned, including demo recordings of "Live Is Life".

Only a short time later the producers Jade Davis (vocals) and B-Nice (rap+vocals) got to know each other and the song "Loveline" was created, which reached #2 in the Austrian charts:
