3/31/84: 36 favorites with these 17 being my absolute faves:I Want A New Drug, Miss Me Blind, 99 Luftballons, Radio Ga-Ga, Give It Up, The Runner, Come Back & Stay, They Don't Know, New Song, Don't Answer Me, Tonight, Leave It, Nobody Told Me, The Authority Song, Head Over Heels, A Fine Day, One In A MillionThe four songs that aren't favorites: Back Where You Belong (a retread of "If I'd Been The One"), Let's Stay Together (an unnecessary remake, done in a key that doesn't fit the mood of the song), Red Red Wine (bland without the reggae-rap ending featured in '88), To All The Girls I've Loved Before (schmaltzy). 3/31/73: 20 favorites with these 9 being my absolute faves:Killing Me Softly With His Song, Break Up To Make Up, The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia, Hummingbird, The Cisco Kid, Could It Be I'm Falling In Love, Walk On The Wild Side, Stuck In The Middle With You, WildflowerHoward Jones and Seals & Crofts are This Week's Shooda Dun Betr Picks. Howard's "New Song" is a perfect example of a first song by a new artist that underachieved on the charts (just like "Holiday" by Madonna around that time) yet gets good airplay today. Meanwhile, "Hummingbird" just soars at times, especially towards the end. American got it wrong back in the day... but I'm featuring them here: BONUS: On the Charis website, just to the right of the 3/31/73 chart link is a link to the listener directory from June of 1973. AT40 was featured on about 175 U.S. stations at the time. Amazingly, AT40 didn't have a home in such major cities as Chicago, San Francisco, San Diego, Atlanta, St. Louis, Cincinnati, Detroit , Philadelphia and Pittsburgh and other major cities. The state with the most stations playing AT40 at the time? North Carolina!

I think we all want to know where listenerwants2know is. He missed posting this past week. Hopefully he's enjoying some vacation time. While I really like or love 22 songs from the 4/3/82 countdown, these 9 are my absolute faves:That Girl, Don't Talk To Strangers, Edge Of Seventeen, (Oh) Pretty Woman, '65 Love Affair, Find Another Fool, 867-5309/Jenny, Did It (In A Minute), Spirits In The Material WorldWhile I really like or love 17 songs from the 4/8/72 countdown, these 10 are my absolute faves:A Horse With No Name, A Heart Of Gold, Jungle Fever, Betcha By Golly Wow, Daydreaming, Roundabout, Taurus, The Family Of Man, Bang A Gong (Get It On), Slippin' Into DarknessThis Week's Pick Hits are by Hall & Oates and War. "Did It (In A Minute)" initially sounds like an '80s soundtrack hit but then the Hall & Oates sound kicks in. Meanwhile, "Slippin' Into Darkness" doesn't seem like an immediate hit but that one grows on you after awhile. Here you go... Since listenerwants2know didn't share an 8,000 word essay in a post last week , here's a bonus feature. Since today is April Fool's Day, here one of two #1 songs to hit #1 during the Casey era... "What A Fool Believes" by The Doobie Brothers. The other is "Foolish Beat" by Debbie Gibson.

Larry Carlton - Theme From Hill Street Blues Rick Springfield - I´ve Done Everything For You Sheena Easton - For Your Eyes OnlyEaster 2024It´s hard to believe: researchers at Salzburg University Library recently discovered parts of a Bible from the time of Johannes Gutenberg, i.e. the 15th century. According to the Catholic Press Agency and ORF Salzburg, the valuable finds come from the library of the Capuchin monastery in Salzburg. The monks donated their library to the University of Salzburg in 2023 so that the collection could be researched. It contains around 5000 volumes. The sensational find was made by Beatrix Koll, head of the university library´s special collection. She became aware of a special book cover. It was a page of the Epistle to the Ephesians from the Bible and was printed on parchment. The researcher discovered that it was a fragment of a 36-page Bible known as "B36". According to the Catholic Press Agency, only 13 copies of this Bible are known worldwide. According to its director Ursula Schachl-Raber, the university was expecting unique finds. Perhaps there will be more to come. Beatrix Koll has already discovered a second "B36" fragment. A watermark indicates that it could have been used to give a book a new binding from Salzburg in the 17th century. With the new football center, Salzburg is responding to the boom, but also to the many years of professional work of the Salzburg Ducks, which is also reflected in their sporting successes. The city and province are investing almost 1.6 million euros in this modern sports facility, which fits seamlessly into the "Sports Center North" concept. The result is a new, modern home for the Salzburg Ducks, including stands for almost 1,000 fans. With over 300 members, the Ducks are one of the largest sports clubs in the city and province of Salzburg and focus on promoting young talent and social commitment. Further information can be found at www.salzburgducks.com/. Teasy, the mascot of the music program "Formel Eins" (Formula One) from the 80s, has mixed up the letters a bit in the following editions and made it ... fitting for Easter Monday ... They drop to the floor to the right music, spin around and jump back up to the beat. Jimmy D. and Jojo are perfecting their breakdancing style in the Bronx. They want to form their own crew. Only those who win a battle against other breakdancers will be accepted. Crazy Legs and Lenny Len do just that - and become part of the Rock Steady Crew. At the beginning of the 80s, the Rock Steady Crew suddenly came into the public eye. A photographer discovers the boys on the street. He invites them to a show in front of the Lincoln Center. Suddenly they were getting requests for gigs, the New York Times was knocking on their door, radio stations wanted interviews by the dozen and TV crews were filming the "Battles" to broadcast them on evening programs. Breakdancing is all the rage and the Rock Steady Crew with their crazy moves are in great demand. And then comes the record deal. Charisma Records is a small label that is - supposedly - dedicated to promoting young artists. But for the kids from the Bronx, the contract is an impenetrable desert of paragraphs. They sign anyway. And there they are: in the studio. Turn on the record button and start rapping: "Hey You - The Rock Steady Crew". They have rented an airfield for the music video. The Rock Steady Crew dance in front of a graffiti wall. The main vocals are sung by a woman, a teenager. Daisy Castro, alias Baby Love, is 15 and a real one-off: the only girl breakdancing far and wide, the only B-girl in the Rock Steady Crew. "Hey You - The Rock Steady Crew" becomes a success. And now that success has arrived and money is at stake, the Rock Steady Crew take revenge for having signed without a terrible contract. Because they don´t see much more than pocket money from the proceeds. They have no say in the music. When Charisma Records is bought by Virgin, the kids are no longer even allowed to perform under the name Rock Steady Crew. But Rock Steady Crew member Crazy Legs is a real stand-up guy. In the 90s, he revived the Rock Steady Crew and became one of the most influential ambassadors of breakdancing. Breakdancing also becomes an official discipline for the first time at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris and the "B-Boys" and "B-Girls" battle it out for Olympic medals. And perhaps "Hey You" will also be played ... from my musical category "daydreamer"My motto: "Not always the often heard hits."

50 years of "Waterloo"
On 4/6/1974, ABBA wins the Grand Prix de la Chanson. "Waterloo" becomes one of the most successful songs in ESC history. In the months that followed, the song topped the charts in many European countries. The song was released on 3/4/1974, but nobody knew what would happen in the coming weeks. The two musical heads of the band, Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson, together with their manager, friend and co-author of numerous songs, Stig Anderson, had already planned to represent Sweden at the Grand Prix de la Chanson, as the Eurovision Song Contest was then called, in 1973. Unfortunately, however, the team, including the two lead singers Agnetha Fältskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad, failed to convince the Swedish jury at the preliminary round. However, Björn, Benny, Anna & Frieda, as the singing quartet was still called at the time, were able to win over the country´s viewers, as their song "Ring Ring" became the summer hit of the year. To be on the safe side, Benny Andersson and Stig Anderson retreated to a small island for a few days and presented four new songs to the other band members. Everyone´s favorite was the piece with the working title "Honey Pie".
Then someone came up with the idea of adding "Waterloo" to the three syllables. No sooner said than done, with "Waterloo" in their luggage, ABBA, which was another idea of the get-together, performed at the Melody Festival, as the preliminary round in Sweden was called, on 2/9/1974. They won with 302 points and a huge lead over one of the superstars in Sweden, Lars Berghagen, who scored 211 points. For the sake of completeness, it should be mentioned that the group had entered two songs in the preliminary round. The second song is called "Hasta Manana" and can be found on the album "Waterloo". Now the destination was Brighton, because after Luxembourg won the song contest for the second time in a row with Anne-Marie David - before that it was Vicky Leandros with "Apres Toi" - an agreement was reached with the BBC that they would organize the 1974 Grand Prix. Looking neutrally at the field of musicians who were sent into the race that day, few Swedes thought they had a chance. The competitors were Olivia Newton-John, Mouth & MacMacNeal, Peret (who landed a Europe-wide summer hit with "Borriquito"), Ireen Sheer and Italy even sent a former winner, Gigliola Cinquetti, into the race.
But sometimes it depends on the form of the day. The performance of the four Swedes thrilled the whole of Europe that evening and their conductor Sven-Olof Waldoff, who conducted the orchestra dressed as Napoleon, scored further sympathy points. When the judging began, it was clear that a sensation was in the air. ABBA won by a wide margin ahead of Gigliola Cinquetti and Mouth & MacNeal. The big favorite Olivia Newton-John had to settle for 4th place. A lasting friendship developed between the favorite and the beaming winners, which brought them together again and again during their world careers.
And here are my "#1"-editions:
4/3/82 (A):
Joan Jett & The Blackhearts - I Love Rock 'N Roll Stevie Wonder - That Girl (#1 Soul) The J. Geils Band - Centerfold The Oak Ridge Boys - Bobbie Sue (#1 County) Vangelis - Chariots Of Fire
4/6/85 (B): Madonna - Crazy For You Phil Collins - One More Night REO Speedwagon - Can´t Fight This Feeling USA For Africa - We Are The World Wham ! feat. George Michael - Careless Whisper
Time for an extra: Ultravox
Midge Ure, frontman of the band Ultravox, describes him as the "glue that held the band together": Chris Cross enjoyed huge success as Ultravox´s bassist. Now the musician has died at the age of 71. The cause of death was initially unknown. According to media reports, Cross, whose real name was Chris Allen, died on 3/25. "You were the logic in the madness and the madness in our lives. It was great knowing you and growing with you. You are loved and missed, old friend." wrote Midge Ure on his social media channels. Chris Cross was one of the founding members of the band Ultravox with Midge Ure, Warren Cann and Billy Currie, who were celebrated for hits such as "Hymn", "Vienna" and "Dancing With Tears In My Eyes". Ultravox split up in 1987, but reunited 20 years later. 2012 saw the release of the Ultravox album "Brilliant". In 2023, the 1982 LP "Quartet" was released in a new edition.
R.I.P., Chris Cross.

Furthermore, ABBA had also originally cited the song "See My Baby Jive", by English glam rock band Wizzard, as a major influence (it was produced in the same style); in the wake of their Eurovision victory, they were quoted as saying that it would not surprise them if artists such as Wizzard would consider entering the Eurovision in the future. Its 'B' Side was a spoof of "Roll Over Beethoven" written by Electric Light Orchestra's cellist Hugh McDowell, "Bend Over Beethoven"...

While I really like or love 27 songs from the 4/20/74 countdown, these 14 are my absolute faves:TSOP, Come & Get Your Love, Oh My My, The Locomotion, The Lord's Prayer, Lookin' For A Love, The Show Must Go On, My Mistake (Was To Love You)*, Dark Lady, Jet, Midnight At The Oasis, You Make Me Feel Brand New, Help Me, Jungle BoogieWhile I really like or love 27 songs from the 4/11/87 countdown, these 9 are my absolute faves:The Finer Things, Looking For A New Love, Walking Down Your Street, Dominoes, Come As You Are, Cantcha Say/Still In Love, Smoking Gun, Serious, Ship Of Fools (Save Me From Tomorrow)* Marvin Gaye & Diana Ross plus World Party are This Week's Shooda Dun Beter Picks. "My Mistake" is a pure pop nugget that somehow only got to #19. Meanwhile, "Ship Of Fools" is a little different sounding but it definitely works for me (love the key it's in). I understand a #27 peak on that one but it deserved to go higher. Here you go: BONUS: Sister Janet Mead is in the Top 10 on this week's '74 show. YES!

4/11/87:
Huey Lewis & The News - I Know What I Like Peter Wolf - Come As You Are Poison - Talk Dirty To Me Shirley Murdock - As We Lay The Breakfast Club - Right On Track
Number 3
From "Dance Dance Dance" to "Yummy Yummy Yummy", from "Fun Fun Fun" to "Say Say Say" - this week it´s all about song titles in which exactly one word is mentioned exactly three times. And the following edition also has something to do with the number 3, because each song title consists of exactly three words:
4/11/87:
Club Nouveau - Lean On Me Europe - The Final Countdown Janet Jackson - Let´s Wait Awhile Madonna - La Isla Bonita Steve Winwood - The Finer Things
Time for an extra: Tony! Toni! Toné!
From the song titles to a band whose name consists of three words that sound the same - but are not spelled the same. Here are Tony! Toni! Toné! with "If I Had No Loot":
from my musical category "daydreamer" My motto: "Not always the often heard hits."

Before I started my SiriusXM subscription in 2019, I heard a lot of Bob Seger and KISS on local Detroit radio stations. Somehow, "Shame On The Moon" really grew on me over the years. It went from being okay when I was in high school to a good song in my 30s to a great song now. Meanwhile, I still rock out to "Calling Dr. Love" 47 years later! I hope it's okay to admit my favorite part to lip synch in CDL is with the female background singers singing, "Dr. Loooooooove" . Here you go:
