>The history of the Faschingskrapf<
I just Googled it and, what do you know, this is what JFK claimed to be, which got some laughs at the time. What a difference one word can make. No, Mr. President, you're not a donut. "Mr. Khrushchev, tear-down-this-wall!" might have worked better.

>The history of the Faschingskrapf< I just Googled it and, what do you know, this is what JFK claimed to be, which got some laughs at the time. What a difference one word can make. No, Mr. President, you're not a donut. "Mr. Khrushchev, tear-down-this-wall!" might have worked better. A trip back to 6/26/1963 ...
And speaking about donuts - The word donut reminds me very, very often of the announcement of Madonna´s "Like A Virgin" in Solid Gold:
Jun 26 Wednesday John and Paul compose `She Loves You' at their hotel room in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. www.dmbeatles.com/history.php?year=1963Their only German Hot 100 hit composed on the same day as JFKs speech. Then, With The Beatles (and A Christmas Gift For You From Phil Spector) were released on 11/22/63. "Solid Gold" Episode #5.21 (TV Episode 1985) IMDb www.imdb.com › title Episode #5.21: Directed by Louis J. Horvitz. With Rick Dees, Lee Greenwood, David Hasselhoff, JULIAN LENNON. Julian, John, JFK, David Hasselhoff, Disco Duck, Madonna, Lee Greenwood, Louis J. Horvitz, Donuts.....it's a small world. And We Are The World was recorded five days before the release of this very special episode of Solid Gold. A lot to unpack here. www.yahoo.com/entertainment/madonna-prince-world-snub-1985-093055417.html#:~:text=They%20wanted%20voices%20that%20really,by%20documentary%20director%20Bao%20Nguyen. Per below, Michael Jackson had NOTHING TO DO with Madonna and Prince not being on We Are The World. Yeah, okay. The musical performance of "We Are the World" on Jan. 28, 1985, was one of the biggest nights in music history – and now its being retold. In an interview with Fox News Digital, "The Greatest Night in Pop" documentary director, Bao Nguyen, explained the decision process that led to Madonna and Prince being left out of the legendary musical performance. "The film explains it really well," Nguyen began. "[Producer] Ken Kragen and his staff, [producer] Harriet Sternberg – Harriet wanted Madonna. Ken didn't want Madonna because he thought that Cyndi [Lauper] sort of served the purpose of being the female pop icon at that time, and it was as simple as that. They wanted voices that really were distinct from each other and that represented their genre." Madonna and Prince's snub from the 1985 "We Are the World" performance is explained by documentary director Bao Nguyen. The 1985 performance of "We Are The World" – written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie – was produced by U.S.A for Africa to raise awareness and funds for a worldwide hunger relief program. Bao told Fox News Digital that this process led to Kenny Rogers' role in the performance and Lionel Richie representing the pop genre. "You have a generational icon like Ray Charles, like everyone had a distinct voice," Nguyen continued. "I think Ken, just from what I've learned in researching, is that at the end of the day, [he thought] ‘I can just pick Cyndi over Madonna.’" As far as Prince being snubbed from the legendary night – which aired March 7, 1985 – Nguyen explained that he had conversations with Sheila E., a close friend of Prince at the time, who explained she couldn't convince Prince to be a part of the performance. "He wouldn't work well in that room. That's basically what happened, and it was just the environment that he wouldn't feel comfortable in," Bao explained. Nguyen explained that he was surprised by rhe role of Sheila Escovedo – known as Shelia E. – in the production and how she felt "used" leading up to the musical performance. "I think for me, the most, maybe not the wildest thing, but like, an eye-opening thing was definitely Sheila E's role and trying to get friends to be part of it," he began. "As she says in the film, feeling that she was being used to get Prince." Nguyen continued, "Again, to Lionel's credit, he had no comments about that scene. Again, it's an honest story and that's Sheila E.'s perspective." Hey it makes perfect sense. As long as Ray Charles, Willie Nelson and the Blues Brothers were represented, who needed the two hottest pop stars in the world? So Africans can eat a little less. We got Aykroyd!

Cyndi Lauper and Madonna appeared on the same episode of American Bandstand. The air date was exactly one year before the recording of "We Are the World": 1/28/84.

2/19/83:
Frida - I Know There´s Something Going On Musical Youth - Pass The Dutchie Olivia Newton-John - Tied Up Patti Austin & James Ingram - Baby, Come To MeSammy Hagar - Your Love Is Driving Me Crazy TwistEverything turns, everything moves - in the media, in fashion and in music. At the turn of the 50s and 60s, what would later be called lifestyle was discovered. Whether it was clothes or hairstyles, fashionable dances or party games - the life-hungry post-war generation found out what was "the latest thing" from the magazines. The story of Twist - the name of the hottest fashion dance of 1961/62, which was historically the first to do without physical contact - is also set in the glitzy, glamorous world of a magazine editorial office. " Twist" is also the title of the glossy magazine, where a busy editor-in-chief runs the show. She is embroiled in constant squabbles with the director of the publishing house, who, to make matters worse, is also her ex-husband and would rather shut down the moderately successful magazine today than tomorrow. Then an editor with a talent for dancing has an idea that could possibly save the day. By taking part in a big contest, he wants to bring the dance magazine to higher honors and thus also to a higher circulation. But the dancing star-to-be has made his calculations without his dance partner ... The following edition should also be danceable: 2/19/83: Adam Ant - Goody Two Shoes Earth, Wind & Fire - Fall In Love With Me Phil Collins - You Can´t Hurry Love The Clash - Rock The Casbah The Stray Cats - Stray Cat Strut Time for an extra: Dire StraitsDire Straits were still publicly resting on their laurels for "Sultans of Swing" at the start of the 80s. In fact, they received two Grammy Awards for the single in the summer of 1980. In the background, however, Dire Straits were in the studio. There was a dispute between Mark Knopfler and David Knopfler and in future only one of the brothers remained in the band: Mark Knopfler. He tried to make the band's songs more complex. But a clear line was missing. Proof of this is the song "Private Dancer". Dire Straits simply could not clearly commit to this composition. As a result, "Private Dancer" was offered to the singer Tina Turner. She turned it into a gigantic hit. In January 1983, Dire Straits released the mini-album "ExtendedancEPlay". The band wanted to release new songs, even though the previous album "Love Over Gold" was still in the charts. The track "Badges, Posters, Stickers, T-Shirts" was actually a remnant from the recordings for "Love Over Gold". Drummer Terry Williams had supported the band for these recordings because Pick Withers had left the band. And Terry Williams really stepped on the gas. The songs are lively - and the single release "Twisting by the Pool" is an absolute rock and roll hit. The rock and roll years were the cool reference decade in the 80s. "Twisting By The Pool" was a commercial success for Dire Straits and a big radio hit. But the song didn´t help Dire Straits´ image. Simply delivering a rock and roll hit without any humor was a bit too uncool. "Twisting By The Pool" was written by Mark Knopfler. In the lyrics, he talks about going on vacation and renting a small chalet on the fictitious "Costa Del Magnifico". He sings about the people at the local pool as they "dance to the Euro beat". from my musical category "daydreamer"My motto: "Not always the often heard hits."

While I really like or love 36 songs from the 2/23/85 countdown, these 16 are my absolute faves:Easy Lover, Neutron Dance, Method Of Modern Love, Sugar Walls, The Old Man Down The Road, Misled, The Boys Of Summer, Lover Girl, Jungle Love*, Relax, Materials Girl, Rockin' At Midnight, Naughty Naughty, Just Another Night, The Ooh Ooh Song, TendernessBTW, the 4 songs that didn't make my favorite list: Only The Young (the drums and bass line don't seem as pronounced as usual for a Journey song), Operator (the spoken word mid-section of the song is a channel changer for me), I Wanna Hear It From Your Lips (Eric, you're from Cleveland like me so it pains me to say it that IWHIFYL is a boring tune), Tragedy (there's a good song there but John's voice doesn't seem to mesh well with the slow tempo of the song). While I really like or love 21 songs from the 2/26/72 countdown, these 10 are my absolute faves:Let's Stay Together, Everything I Own, Heart Of Gold, Bang A Gong (Get It On), Day After Day, Black Dog, Jungle Fever*, Brand New Key, Mother & Child Reunion, Runnin' AwayI'm picking The Time and Chakakhas as This Week's Pick Hits... "Jungle Love" and "Jungle Fever". I don't care that I'm 56 years old, if I want to sing, "I wanna take you to my cage, lock you up and hide the key, oh-ee-oh-ee-oh" , or "asi, asi asi, ay, ay" , well I'm going to. On one lyric site, the lyrics after "asi, asi, asi, ay, ay" are actually listed as "suave, no, no, no, [?]" ! So let me channel my inner kid for a few minutes here as I enjoy the funky "Jungle Love" and "Jungle Fever"... BONUS: I am overdue for a listenerwants2know type of story... Did you know that this Wednesday is National Sticky Buns Day? Sounds like a good reason for me to feature "Sweet Sticky Thing" by The Ohio Players here. They were certainly thinking of food items like Sticky Buns when they wrote this song :

2/23/85:Autograph - Turn Up The Radio John Hunter - Tragedy John Parr - Naughty Naughty REO Speedwagon - Can´t Fight This FeelingThe Honeydrippers - Rockin´ At Midnight Leap DayThe starting point for our current date calculation(s) is the Gregorian calendar, which has been in use since 10/15/1582. The background to this is the fact that in the middle of the 16th century it was noticed that the Julian calendar in use at that time, which was introduced by Julius Caesar in 45 BC, was now 10 days out of sync with astronomical data. Every fourth year is a leap year in the Julian calendar, which means that one year has an average length of 365.25 days.
However, a "real" year has exactly 365.2422 days. This results in a shift of 11 minutes and 14 seconds, which had added up to around 10 days by the 16th century. For this reason, Pope Gregory XIII announced the reformation of the Julian calendar on 2/24/1582 in the form of the bull "Inter gravissimas", which included the following rules for leap years: If a year is divisible by 4 but not by 100, it is a leap year (2004, 2008, 2012, ... are leap years). If a year is divisible by 4, by 100 and by 400, it is also a leap year (1600, 2000, 2400, ... are leap years). If a year is divisible by 4 and by 100, but not by 400, it is not a leap year (1800, 1900, 2100, 2200, ... are not leap years). In addition, to compensate for the 10-day difference, Thursday, 10/4/1582 (Julian calendar) was immediately followed by Friday, 10/15/1582 (Gregorian calendar) as the start of the new calendar calculation. According to the Gregorian calendar, a year now has an average of 365.2425 days, which corresponds to an annual deviation from a "real" year of "only" 26 seconds. Incidentally, the fact that the leap day is inserted at the end of February and not the end of December has its origins in antiquity. In ancient Rome, the year ended in February for a long time, while it began in March (Martius). Our 12th month today was the 10th, which is why it is also called December (from the Latin word "decem", "ten"). For centuries, the Roman year had 355 days; every second year, a whole leap month was placed after February to align the calendar with the position of the sun. Rome´s ruler Julius Caesar ended this procedure in 46 BC and introduced longer months and only one extra day every four years. This was still at the end of February, although with the Julian calendar reform the beginning of the year finally jumped to January 1st. So many calendar gimmicks require a little time, of course, but there will be one leap day in 2024. And the following " extra"-edition provides the extra musical portion: 2/23/85:Billy Joel - Keepin´ The Faith Billy Ocean - Loverboy David Lee Roth - California Girls Madonna - Like A Virgin Philip Bailey & Phil Collins - Easy Lover Time for an extra: Pia ZadoraPia Zadora was already on stage as a child. In the early 60s, she played a child´s role on Broadway in New York for several years. Pia was 10 years old at the time and this experience would shape her for the rest of her life. Several roles followed. In 1981, things got serious: Pia Zadora won a Golden Globe for best young actress. A few film flops followed, which is why she concentrated on her music career in the mid-80s. Today she lives in the Summerlin district of Las Vegas. The villas there are located between golf courses and extensive shopping malls. Pia has been performing again for 10 years. When she takes to the stage, she largely avoids long journeys. Her shows take place on small stages in Las Vegas. However, the corona pandemic has forced her to take a break. Her album "All or Nothing at All" was cut short by the pandemic. Pia Zadora had succeeded in reinventing herself. The songs on "All or Nothing at All" sound pleasantly jazzy and light. Of course, Pia will not be slowed down. Now Las Vegas Journal has spread the word that the musician is working on new songs in her studio. She had the studio built into her villa ... Pia Zadora doesn´t like long journeys. The song "Let´s Dance Tonight" comes from the movie "Voyage of the Rock Aliens": from my musical category "daydreamer"My motto: "Not always the often heard hits."
