While I really like or love 29 songs from this 3/1/86 countdown, these 11 are my absolute faves: Living In America, The Sweetest Taboo, Life In A Northern Town, A Love Bizarre, Russians, ROCK In The USA, Sanctify Yourself, Stages, What You Need, Rock Me Amadeus, Tender Love
While I really like or love 23 songs from the 3/4/75 countdown, these10 are my absolute faves: Pick Up The Pieces, Lady Marmalade, #9 Dream, Express, You're No Good, Lovin' You, Fire, No No Song, Boogie On Reggae Woman, Part Of The Plan
Sting and BT Express receive my This Week's Pick Hits designation. Talk about different types of songs... "Russians" is a political tune while "Express" is an instrumental. Both songs tap into my mood for some reason... but I love them both.

3/1/86:ABC - How To Be A Millionaire Aretha Franklin - Another Night Electric Light Orchestra - Calling America James Brown - Living In America Sade - The Sweetest Taboo Two celebrate a very special birthdayWhen I say I´m turning 22, nobody believes me," laughs Theresia Sturm. In fact, the pensioner from Wals near Salzburg, who was born in 1936, can only celebrate her 22nd birthday on 2/29. However, she doesn´t feel any younger because of her special birthday. This may also be due to the fact that she already has 14 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and now also a great-great-grandchild. In 2024, the sprightly senior celebrates with her family at her home in Wals, with cake of course and a particularly big party in leap year. Her neighbor, Rosemarie Eibl, is also celebrating her "real" birthday again after four years - for the 14th time. But she doesn´t want to be that young again. "Everything has its time. It´s good the way it is," she says. This year there will be a big celebration with the family. In other years, she celebrates on 3/1. "I wasn´t there on 2/28," says Eibl. All birthdays are actually the same anyway, she thinks. But the 56-year-old recognizes one big advantage: "Hardly anyone forgets my birthday." Almost everyone remembers this very special date. And here is my special " 2/29" edition (from 3/1/86): 3/1/86:Charlie Sexton - Beat´s So Lonely (# 29 on 2/22/86) Dionne & Friends - That´s What Friends Are For (# 29 on 3/8/86) Falco - Rock Me Amadeus (# 29 on 3/1/86) Mr. Mister - Kyrie (# 2 on 2/22/86) Whitney Houston - How Will I Know (# 2 on 3/1/86) Time for an extra: Clint Eastwood & General SaintOn 2/29/96, actor Clint Eastwood receives the "Life Achievement Award" for "his unique lifetime achievement" as an actor, director and producer. And on 4/8/86, actor Clint Eastwood is elected mayor of the town of Carmel-by-the-Sea by a large majority. As mayor of the small town, he receives an allowance of 200 dollars per month, which he donates in full to the Carmel Youth Center. During his term of office, he supports the initiative to legalize the consumption of ice cream on the streets of the town. He ensures that there are public restrooms on the beach and that the city library has its own building. The musician Clint Eastwood (born Robert Brammer) is a Jamaican reggae deejay, who recorded as a solo artist in the late 1970s and early 1980s before teaming up with UK deejay General Saint as the duo Clint Eastwood & General Saint. In 1983, the two released "Stop That Train", a cover of the "Spanish Town Skabeats" from 1965: from my musical category "daydreamer"My motto: "Not always the often heard hits."

This may be a new record for me... While I really like or love 37 (37?!?!) songs on the 3/4/78 countdown, these 11 are my absolute faves:Dance Dance Dance (Yowsah Yowsah Yowsah), Lay Down Sally, Theme From Close Encounters Of The Third Kind*, Thunder Island, Our Love, Dust In The Wind, Ebony Eyes, Jack & Jill, Flash Light, Theme From Which Way Is Up, Long Long Way From HomeNot making the cut: "What A Wonderful World" by Simon, Garfunkel & Taylor (their voices together sound whiny on the refrain), "The Way You Do The Things You Do" (I don't care for Rita Coolidge's arrangement of the song), and "Before My Heart Finds Out" (decent song but a little light musically). While I really like or love 25 songs from the 3/8/80 countdown, these 6 are my absolute faves:Heartbreaker, 99*, With You I'm Born Again, Fire Lake, Back On My Feet Again, Come Back
John Williams and Toto are this week's Shooda Dun Betr Picks. Having dueling versions of "Theme From Close Encounters Of The Third Kind" may have resulted in John Williams' song peaking at #13 but I wore out this single during my 5th grade year. Meanwhile, the single of "99" I bought was the short version but I still enjoyed that version. Today, I can't get enough of the album version. Here you go :

3/8/80 (A):Queen - Crazy Little Thing Called Love Steve Forbert - Romeo´s Tune The Eagles - I Can´t Tell You Why The J. Geils Band - Come Back Toto - 99 3/17/84 (B):Billy Joel - An Innocent ManJohn Lennon - Nobody Told Me K.C. - Give It Up Nena - 99 Luftballons Olivia Newton-John - Livin´ In Desperate Times Love locksLove weighs heavily - especially on the Marko Feingold footbridge in the old town, which is visited by crowds of tourists every year. Both tourists and locals leave love locks on the mesh railing, usually with initials and a date. And every year, council workers remove around one in ten love locks. In total, the pedestrian bridge is lightened by around two tons. This is not about the load-bearing capacity of the bridge - there is no need to worry about that, they emphasize - but about the mesh of the railing, which is already damaged in some places. All the locks near the handrail are out of luck, as are those who have "immortalized" themselves on the guidance system for the blind. Incidentally, the 15,000 or so locks that have been pinched off will not be disposed of, but kept, says Holzleitner: "They will definitely be stored at the building yard for a year, so that if someone comes and says their lock is gone, they can get it back. Storing them is mandatory, but it´s difficult to find the lock among thousands of locks." So far, however, hardly anyone has bothered to search for the needle in the pile of locks. Many passers-by are saddened by the sight of the love locks having to be removed from the bridge: "It´s sad, but it doesn´t help," said one. But: "True love is not dependent on a lock on a bridge." The city of Salzburg recommends that all couples use small, beautiful and rust-free love locks - because they stand the best chance. And here are my " love"-editions of the week: 3/8/80 (A):Air Supply - Lost In Love Billy Preston & Syreeta - With You I´m Born Again Ray, Goodman & Brown - Special Lady The Captain & Tennille - Do That To Me One More Time Tommy James - Three Times In Love3/17/84 (B):Kool & The Gang - Joanna Lionel Richie - Hello Phil Collins - Against All Odds (Take A Look At Me Now) Sheena Easton - Almost Over You Tina Turner - Let´s Stay TogetherTime for an extra: Status Quo"Marguerita Time" divides the fans, it even divided the band, but it was playlisted by the BBC and in 1983 gave Status Quo one of their biggest hit singles ever. Perhaps more so than with any other band, Status Quo´s repertoire includes a handful of songs that became enormous chart hits yet were reviled by many of the band’s staunchest fans. In Status Quo´s case examples of this include "Living On An Island", "In The Army Now", "The Anniversary Waltz" and "Burning Bridges". But "Marguerita Time", a jaunty yet seemingly inoffensive ditty that Francis Rossi and collaborative partner Bernie Frost wrote about an alcoholic cocktail, was despised so much by one member of the group that it caused him to quit. Which may even have been a catalyst in Status Quo´s decision to call it a day (temporarily, it turned out) in 1984. The previous summer, the UK had been swept by a craze for getting smashed on margueritas – a sweet-tasting but deceptively strong tequila-based cocktail. Decorated with fruit and mini-umbrellas, for all its potency it was about as far from the good old-fashioned British pint as you could get. Rossi didn´t care at all, and found himself supping more margueritas than was advisable. "I´d never been a drinker until then, but they were delicious and really got you pissed," he recalls. "I used to order them six at a time. For a while I got out of control on tequila." The basic structure of "Marguerita Time" came together while Rossi was "poncing around" on his grand piano at home, and the rest was worked up with Bernie Frost over the phone. The album it appeared on was 1983´s "Back To Back". It wasn´t an easy record to make, and Status Quo almost scrapped it and started again when they returned home. Nevertheless, Rossi had very little trouble persuading Alan Lancaster – the band member who ended up opposing "Marguerita Time" so vehemently – to record his bass part for it. "He didn´t argue too much because he didn´t think it would see the light of day," Rossi recalls. "But the record label knew right away it should come out as a single at Christmas time." from my musical category "daydreamer"My motto: "Not always the often heard hits."

Firefall did not make the cut and if I posted here, it would not be on my list either. Firefall is seemingly unique in their top 40 chart career which ends with the 1981 show. They had 3 fall hits which all peaked around #10. And they had 3 late winter/spring hits which all peaked in the 30s.

Vienna´s Wurstel prater has one more attraction: the new Prater Museum has opened. On 200 square meters of exhibition space, the aim is to tell the story of the Prater´s 250-year history. There is just as much room for nostalgia as there is for a critical look at the past. "Come and see ! Take a look," shines out at visitors in neon lettering as soon as they reach the first of the two exhibition levels via the staircase from the foyer, which is equipped with a giant Prater hidden object picture and is free to enter. There really is a lot to see. Here, an XXL Fortuna from the ring game of the same name is spinning, there is a waddle man waiting to be admired. The "International Marriage Bureau" tells of a place charged with longing, as does the reclining nude Venus from the wax museum of the time. Plans, paintings and photographs give an impression of the topography of the Prater and its extremely socially mixed life, as well as the historical entertainment venues and the lavish gastronomy on offer. The exhibition also explores the impact of the Prater in literature, music and film. "There is no other place in Vienna that has left so many traces in our cultural memory," said Werner Michael Schwarz, responsible for the conception of the permanent exhibition alongside Susanne Winkler, at a press conference last Thursday. The opening of the imperial hunting grounds to the general public by Joseph II in 1766 was nothing short of "revolutionary", as the area was then accessible to the general public free of charge, regardless of social status. This openness without any obligation to consume is still a key feature of the Prater today, which also sets it apart from other amusement parks in many cities around the world, enthused Mayor Michael Ludwig. In addition, the rides and restaurants here have always been run by family businesses. A small exhibition chapter is dedicated to these " Prater dynasties" in a "Hall of Fame". The head of the city also emphasized that the new building now has twice as much exhibition space as the former Prater Museum as part of the Planetarium. It is also possible to see the extent to which technical innovations have found their way into the amusement park - such as the rotunda built for the 1873 World Exhibition and later burnt down, the "Venice in Vienna" scenery city opened in 1895, including gondolas in artificial canals or in the form of complicated apparatus. Dioramas and grotto rides also offered windows into foreign lands. And here are my " celebration"-editions: 3/14/81 (A):Blondie - Rapture Cliff Richard - A Little In Love Dolly Parton - 9 To 5 Kool & The Gang - Celebration Sheena Easton - Morning Train (Nine To Five) 3/19/88 (B):Aerosmith - Angel Belinda Carlisle - I Get Weak Billy Ocean - Get Outta My Dreams, Get Into My Car Michael Jackson - Man In The Mirror Tiffany - I Saw Him Standing There Time for an extra: Robert Palmer"Johnny & Mary" is about a couple that are just going through the motions. Johnny is trapped in predictable patterns and Mary just goes along with it.
Robert Palmer was living in Nassau, Bahamas when he wrote song. There´s a large ex-pat community there comprised of people who thought moving to the Bahamas would solve their problems, only to discover their issues travel with them. "Lyrically I was dealing with my exposure to expatriots in the Bahamas," he wrote in his Addictions: Volume 1 compilation. "I´d never seen such contrived formality before but Johnny and Mary obviously had. These are people who have fallen into life like a habit, here's no struggle or romance in what they do." from my musical category "daydreamer"My motto: "Not always the often heard hits."

Radio Super 80s
Austria´s digital radio landscape is becoming more colorful and growing - and so is Austria´s largest private radio station kronehit. The media authority KommAustria has granted the broadcasting network operator ORS licenses for the construction and operation of a nationwide multiplex platform as well as for five regional multiplexes for the transmission of a total of 28 new DAB+ stations. Broadcasting is permitted from the end of June. According to a press release, this brings the total number of existing and future DAB+ stations in Austria to 58.
The nationwide program bouquet includes two completely new stations from kronehit: "Radio Red White Red" and "Super 80s". kronehit had announced at the end of last year that it wanted to build four new DAB+ stations - in addition to the broad kronehit music streaming offering. These are not intended to compete with the FM radio station kronehit, but to appeal to new target groups.
Ex-Ö3 boss Georg Spatt is involved in the development. The other two future kronehit radio stations are included in a regional multiplex platform for Lower Austria and Burgenland. They are called "Eurodance X-Press" and "Pirate Radio".
Daniela Linzer will manage the new kronehit radios as DAB+ program director. She calls their imminent launch a "milestone in the history of the Austrian radio market and an enrichment of unprecedented diversity" for radio listeners. "It will be a super exciting task to bring these four stations on air with a new innovative form of radio making."
And Georg Spatt explains: "Above all, these four new stations should be fun. And they will make the existing radio offering in Austria better, more varied and more fun."
And here´s my current "Super 80s" edition:

Time for an extra: Haysi Fantayzee
Haysi Fantayzee were certainly one of the shrill phenomena of the early 80s: garish leggings, long dreadlocks and oversized hats characterized the clothing style of Jeremiah Healy and Kate Garner. However, critics accused Haysi Fantayzee of being a plagiarism of Boy George and Culture Club. The band had their breakthrough with their 1st single "John Wayne Is Big Leggy", but the 2nd single from the album "Battle Hymns for Children Singing" is catchier: "Shiny Shiny"
Jeremiah Healy became a DJ after the band broke up. He still distributes new remix versions of "Shiny Shiny" under the name "Haysi Fantayzee".
