I didn't know where to put this topic but I was wondering if anyone listened to Backtrax USA with Kid Kelly 80s/90s I like the show but they do play the same songs over and over and you can only hear "Hungry Like The Wolf" only so many times. So does anyone else listen to it? I'm noticing it's getting harder to find too. It doesn't seem to be on many radio stations.

It's kind of funny, I was thinking of Backtrax tonight driving home from an event. No sooner did I think of it that I found it on my dial. Listen to about a segment and a half until the station faded, sounded the same as it did when I listen to it in high school 12 years ago.
It's funny though, I can think of about a half dozen stations that I used to catch it on and not a single one of them airs it anymore.
I know that both Backtrax and Rick Dees suffered significant affiliate loss when they left the Premiere family of shows. Dees seemed to lose about 90% of his Clear Channel stations overnight when the show left Premiere the first weekend of 2005. Backtrax was much more gradual. It was heard on nearly all Clear Channel 'Mix' Hot AC stations at one point, even after the show left Premiere, but I can't think of a single one that still airs it. Not sure if that is because Hot AC playlists have changed over the years or the staleness of the show just caused affiliates to drop over the years.
Certain shows have thrived even without Premiere distribution to Clear Channel stations. Time Warp, Bob Kingsley, Rewind, and Beatle Brunch come to mind. Others don't seem to have the staying power if Premiere isn't making CC stations air them

I think it's more the second reason then first. There are plenty of 80s stations now and stations that'd favor at least one of these shows but it sounds the exact same way it did in 2000 with no new features, contests, and not really any new information. And when you focus on a certain decade you don't have new music to keep newer fans interested. So if everything sounds the same, it feels extremely stale. As far as being gradual, I think that's because there was a time it wasn't stale. As the years went by it became so to more and more affiliates. I used to record the 80s edition from KBIG before AT20, and the 90s version from Mix 105.1 in Orlando (which for full disclosure is NOT a CC owned station).

You guys are so right. The show is extremely stale, it's basically the same songs over and over again. I guess I'm a glutton for punishment (that or I have no life, possibly the latter). The station in Buffalo (Star 102.5) that had it for many years dropped it over a year ago and I was forced (well not forced really) to get the TuneIn App so I could get the stations that carry the show and even those are dropping like flies. If I don't listen at a certain times I could miss it entirely but it's the same d**n songs over and over and over and over again. How many times can I listen to Hungry Like The Wolf? I don't even know why I bother, I could just go to YouTube if I really want to hear it. Kid Kelly doesn't even seem to be interested anymore. The Rick Dees show WT40 has replaced Backtrax USA on a lot if stations. It's difficult to make an old decade "new" again, I know that, but the show is so stale that even I'm not that interested anymore. I like the Rick Dees 80s/90s show.
Why did Backtrax USA leave Premiere BTW? Thanks for replying

I think it was more a case of Premiere not renewing their distribution deal. It seems in the late 90s/early 2000's they were signing almost anything they could to distribute. Then, either with radio being listened to less and less, less ad revenue, whatever the case, they didn't renew deals with these various entities when they were up. Problem though for the actual show is when they stopped distributing it, they also stopped forcing their stations to carry them. That's why Dees's affiliate count dropped overnight heading into 2005 and why this show's did too once it's deal ran out.

The only major difference I noticed was that there are now some places in the imaging for shows to insert a local liner in the segments. Not that any of them would actually take the time to do that though
Also, the backwards track is not a preview for a song for next weeks show. Since there is no more prize pack they play the backwards track clip in the first hour, again in the second hour and then immediately identify and play it rather than "last weeks backwards track" like it used to be when you could send your guesses for the prize pack.
As much as I'm not a big fan of what Clear Channel has done to radio, if I had a show I would likely want Premiere to syndicate it. I like to think that retro AT40 would survive without it but I also don't want to ever have to worry about it happening

If I were in charge here is what I would do to Backtrax.
I would condense it all into one show. I would have it available in a 2 hour version or a 4 hour version, just like Time Warp and Flashback. Honestly, that is basically how I would put together the show, just like those shows. Mix in music from the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s so that the show would have appeal for AC, Hot AC and Variety Hits formats. Continue with the similar format but add some lost hits and have the songs on a much longer rotation than every 4-5 weeks.

They actually own that show. It's not a distribution deal.

[ . . . ] For what it's worth, another Buffalo station has picked up the '80's version of "Backtrax USA" (I don't know exactly when, in relation to when Star 102.5 dropped it): WHTT (104.1 FM, "Classic Hits 104.1"), a Cumulus station which programs well-known hits from the sixties through the eighties. Backtrax airs from 10 pm to midnight Eastern time on Saturdays. WHTT is available on TuneIn, though on a full-size computer, it opens up a "streamtheworld" window, so it's questionable whether the TuneIn app on a phone will play it properly... Of course, WHTT's Web site (predictably, whtt.com) has a "Listen Live" link right on the front page, as well...

I believe that's the same day and time it used to air on the other Buffalo station that aired it as well.

I believe that's the same day and time it used to air on the other Buffalo station that aired it as well. Yes, Star 102.5 played the 80s show at 10:00-12:00 and then the 90s show right after. Now they just play their regular music. They dropped both shows about a year ago with no warning. Then I had to find the show somewhere else. Thank god for TuneIn. So now I listen to v100 and listen to the the 80s show at 8:00. I wish they had a website where you can hear the show anytime, like Rick Dees so if you miss the show you listen anytime but whatever.

Does anyone remember their old format, where the show, I believe, was only one hour long and they focused on one year? I think that they ended the show by playing the Top Three songs from the same week as the broadcast during that year (i.e. the weekend of July 31, 1993, the year was 1984 and they played the top three for the week of July 28, 1984). Not sure when the show was extended to two hours and became an anything-goes format, but it was sometime between the summer of 1993, and the spring of 1995, when U93 picked up on it.
