In honour of the 20th anniversary of Britney Spears releasing her debut single "Baby One More Time", I'm listening to the AT40 where she debuted - October 17, 1998. Little did Casey or anyone know how big a star she would be....

Little did Casey or anyone know how big a star she would be.... One thing I always find amusing about old countdown shows is hearing Casey talk about a "newcomer" such as Madonna without any clue how huge they would eventually become. Same with introducing a "new" song like Billie Jean or Every Breath You Take as though it was just another song.

A similar case on the show I'm listening to now - taking it back 23 years to Casey's Top 40 from October 28, 1995. Debuting at #40 was the debut single from the Backstreet Boys, "We've Got It Goin' On". Little did Casey or anyone know how big they could become - nor that they would have a comeback hit just this year!

Jumping a week ahead of this week's Premiere's 1981 offering -It's 11-14-81 on the Classic AT40 Iheart Radio Channel. I got to hear Chiiliwack and Diesel before I hear them again this weekend. The 5 debuts are pretty weak compared to the 7 from the week before. One of them is Steve Miller Band's "Heart Like A Wheel" from the Circle Of Love LP which I happen to have. That album was pretty much an EP with "Macho City" occupying the entire 2nd side. I found it strange that Steve Miller came out with "Abracadabra" just months later.

Going back 28 years to AT40 from November 10, 1990. Mariah Carey got her second #1 that week with "Love Takes Time". Several acts were just starting out, such as Nelson, d**n Yankees, Tony Toni Tone and Vanilla Ice, while others were on their last top 40 hits, such as Donny Osmond, Suzanne Vega, David Cassidy, the Righteous Brothers, Hall & Oates, Bette Midler and James Ingram.
Several artists on this show are deceased: George Michael, David Cassidy, Bobby Hatfield of the Righteous Brothers, Michael Hutchence of INXS, Whitney Houston and Jani Lane of Warrant. Not sure if any others are.
Interesting footnote: Shadoe interviewed one of the members of Black Box on how she could sing in English despite barely speaking it... yet the vocals on "Everybody Everybody" were actually handled by an uncredited Martha Wash!
Also interesting: Shadoe mentioned about the curse of the Grammy for Best New Artist. Quite possibly THE biggest happened shortly after this show when it was revealed that Milli Vanilli didn't record the vocals on their recordings and lost their Grammy because of it.

Went on a month sabatical. Caught up this morning with this weeks usual 4. I have to admit, I hate these 1978 early 4 hour shows. I’ve never heard them straight through week after week like this and it feels like it really drags each week. Things will probably feel better in terms of show format when the recap of the previous weeks top 3 comes in.

Casey's Top 40 from November 8, 1997.
Leading into Oasis's "Don't Go Away", which was at #39 that week, he quoted Noel Gallagher on why they stick together despite feuds with brother Liam. Sure enough, they broke up in 2009 and haven't reunited since.

So, today I’ve listened to AT40 11/18/78 and now listening to AT40 11/19/88.
