They should have left Billboard altogether in November of 1991. Or if they wanted to mask it more, do so to start 1992.

I was well aware that Casey was once a DJ. In fact, everytime I ever heard Casey mentioned by anybody on the radio back in the day, he was always referred to as a DJ (not as a announcer, voice actor, radio personality or anything, just a DJ). Not living in California, my only exposure to him on the radio was AT40. But he just doesn't sound like one. I guess that's why he's unique.

Second, I wasn't a fan of the "on location" shows they did, particularly the Disney World show in early 1991. It didn't sound right to me counting down hits that include dance, hard rock & hip hop while interacting with Mickey Mouse. To be fair, Shadoe had to be at Disney World to emcee "Grad Night" there (he did this in 1990, '91 and '92; all three years AT40 broadcasted from there that week). Of course let's not forget last summer when Seacrest still hosted AT40 while he was in London for the Summer Olympics. I personally wonder why. Did Ryan want to do the show from London or did Premiere force him to (so they won't have fill-in hosts for three straight weeks)?

Of course let's not forget last summer when Seacrest still hosted AT40 while he was in London for the Summer Olympics. I personally wonder why. Did Ryan want to do the show from London or did Premiere force him to (so they won't have fill-in hosts for three straight weeks)? It was probably a matter of convenience for all parties. I believe he had a contract with NBC Universal to produce Olympic coverage which would have kept him gainfully occupied over in London for the event. Both Casey and Shadoe had their niche. Casey, it probably goes without saying, was the consumate story-teller, while Shadoe brought his quirky 'theatre of the mind' (without going almost full slapstick as did Rick Dees), from the beginning of his first show right through the way he would introduce an AT40 Flashback. Casey had loosened up in the later years, by intro'ing songs with the occasional rap and singing along, which morphed into Shadoes sense of word-play when relating chart trivia. My primary listening years were from about 1982 to 1993, and in all that time I sensed a genuine enthusiasm about the songs and artists both Casey and Shadoe played... which seems to be the biggest thing missing from the shows these days, and IMO started when the Top 40 format itself started to crumble and subsequently led to the multiple charts being used for the show in the early '90s ~ in fact I give credit to Shadow for trying to 'hold it together' as long as he did. When the underlying continuity of the charts used for the show change as frequently as it did, it ticks off a listener who keeps track of the charts.

People who want to just hate Seacrest aren't going to agree with this. A lot of why I think his show sounds like it does is they have two versions of it and unlike Casey Kasem, you can't partition what he says off and insert something else in the next portion of the segment in cleanly. You can do that with Casey's shows. So, it makes more sense for a lot of what Ryan says and does to not give chart positions and all as much. Yes, I know he could do two entirely different shows. They could also hire someone else to do one of them but neither is going to happen. They work with what they have and Seacrest does IMO the best job one can expect when he practically does everything except answer my prayers to God.

Seacrest does a fine job. It's just a different world now.

What peeves me about Seacrest is he doesn't give AT40 enough priority over his other radio show "On The Air". The last straw was him piggybacking AT40 at the end of an "On The Air" liner like AT40 is just an afterthought. Don't know if he made that decision personally, but still this is a legendary program and he doesn't seem to respect the mantle handed to him by Casey.

I personally have no interest in listening to Seacrest, so I cannot comment there.
In regards to Shadoe, what I am going to say may sound odd. Everybody knows Casey part ways because of money, so we knew a change was happening. Everybody knew Shadoe from "Hollywood Squares" and (in Socal) as the guy in the Federated Stores commercials. So we knew this guy had a personality. What was a big let down to me was how Shadoe sounded on the radio. The sort of deep voice was okay, but then he also sounded like he had a slight lisp. If you are going to replace someone that is perfectly-suited on a show that focused on the chart, you needed to get somebody who sounded great. I guess if you were enough of a loyal fan of AT40, you kept on listening. Maybe eventually you even appreciated the personality style change. However for me, I knew AT40 was never going to be the same.

That isn't his decision, its the executives in charge of it to brand the show with his radio show name because they think the synergy from one helps the other. I don't like it either. I don't think it matters one iota how they brand it because IMO their aren't an additional 3 people worldwide listening to On Air or AT40 because they somehow realized Ryan hosted both all of a sudden. I don't know what you want him to do. His other radio show is live everyday. He HAS to give that priority because he can't cut and recut segments for airing on that. And yes, he does respect the mantle given to him. He's bee gracious to Casey Kasem over the years just as he has to Dick Clark on NYRE. They've aired the first portion of the very first broadcast. He's acknowledged the shows birthday a few times. What more do you want? The show is NEVER going to be what it was. It's a new generation and they like this kind of show. The idea is to cater to your audience. That's what he and the show is doing. That's why Casey Kasem left the show in 2004 to begin with. He couldn't have pulled a show like this off and nor should he have. It's not his personality. Is it my favorite? No and I don't listen that often.

I can back up what Paul said about Ryan being more in tune with the new generation.
I'm a college history instructor and was teaching US History since the Civil War a few years ago. Before class I was talking about my AT40 collection and the fact that I use AT40 to help remember recent history. I asked my students what they thought of Casey Kasem? Only one of my older students even remembered who he was (she thought well of him). When I asked them if they knew Ryan Seacrest, all of them answered and lot had positive things to say about him.
In short, Ryan may not be the best choice for host from among those of us who remember Casey well (from my username you can guess how I feel) but for those in their teens and twenties, Ryan is their choice (even though he's a bit older than they are).

When we were growing up in the 70's, were we listening to the music of the 40's? No, we listened to what was "hip and cool" for our generation. As Patty Loveless once sung, "life's about changes, nothing ever stays the same." I switched from being a pop fan to country fan in the mid-80's and never listened to 90's pop. However, from converting a lot of the Casey's Top 40 shows there's a lot of great music and Casey is just as much Casey as he was on AT40. At the same time, I used to just dismiss the Shadoe shows but he did a LOT better job than most give him credit for. For the gap between AT40 on vinyl (Aug 13, 1988 - June 1989), I've located the master tapes and plan on trying to work them in to convert.

Glad to hear that maybe down the road there will be some remastering of the AT 40 from that time. The Shadoe shows, particularly 1988 through 1991, are lost to many people but there were big time artists that hit almost exclusively during that time period. Most people don't even think about the Roxette's of the world, but the duo had four number ones and two number twos in around 2 and a half years! Paula Abdul had, I believe, 6 number ones during that time. Janet's "Rhythm Nation" album was huge. Heck, Milli Vanilli needs to be remembered! Shadoe, while he wasn't Casey, was a big part of my life growing up, and needs to be recognized. As for Ryan, he does a great job with music that isn't exactly my favorite. But kids know him. And if any are so inclined to turn on a Top 40 show, when they hear Ryan's voice, they might be inclined to stick around. That's why Casey was good. That's why Shadoe was good. And, in my opinion, why Ryan is more than adequate to do the job. Shannon, Paul, and Caseyfan all hit it on the head: what's hip to the younger generation is not intended for us. When Kid President is hosting the show in twenty years, there will be thirty somethings wishing for the days of Seacrest!

Good point, I don't expect AT40 to sound like it used to, and I don't blame Seacrest personally. After seeing him on NYE w/Dick Clark, I do believe he respects his mentors before him. I will say though that maybe he has too many projects going on at once to focus on making any of them spectacular. Casey and Shadoe did not have a regular radio show going on, although they did have voiceover work and a TV show happening the same time they hosted AT40. I think we can all agree AT40 is on a decline and the decision makers are not making it a priority. It is just another radio show among hundreds these days.

No we can't agree on that. I don't think it's on a decline. On the contrary, listenership is up over what it was under Casey Kasem in his last years. And no it's not just another radio show among hundreds because while I may not know them all theres not a huge lot of CHR shows. HAC there might be a few more. But none of them have the name recognition AT40 does and look at the number of affiliates. Casey Kasem's version certainly didn't have this many. Nor does Dees. Are they trying to make it sound like a typical daypart on the radio stations? Yes they are. But that's what radio stations want. It's different and geared for this generation. Again, do I like it? Not much. I also don't like reality TV but it's popularity is certainly not on any decline. Like it or not, the show is as healthy as ever.
