Really enjoy your work on the countdowns. Thanks!
On some of your previous countdowns, there's some interesting stories from a Chicago perspective about 2 of the songs:
The 2/18/67 countdown has The Buckinghams' "Kind Of A Drag" at #1. In Chicago, it had peaked at #2 Dec 1966/Jan 1967. They would have their #1 record locally with their next single "Don't You Care". Also on the same countdown at #16 is Cannonball Adderly's "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy", a song the Buckinghams would cover and take to #5 later in the year.
Also on your current post, the Shadows of Knight song "Gloria" has an interesting history. Clark Weber, the WLS morning DJ at the time really liked Them's original version. He mentioned it to Bill Traut, who ran the local record label Dunwich that he couldn't play it because of the line "She comes up to my room!" The agent asked if he was able to get a local band he was representing to cover the tune removing the "offensive" line and it was good would he put the record in rotation? He said yes, and the agent came in the next day wirh the acetate recording by the Shadows of Knight. The offensive line was replaced with "She calls out my name".

Ok, here's the answer to the above trivia question: Jewel Akens (9/12/33 - 3/01/13), the most recently deceased of the recording artists in the 4/10/65 top 20, occasionally toured with The Monkees. Believe it (if you trust Wikipedia)!

Bumping it up to post the tenth in this year's series of pre-AT40 countdowns, the second from 1964 that was still influenced by the Fab Four though, overall, it has a nice mix of pop, r&b/soul and easy listening tunes. Song that spent the most week at its peak position was the Beatles', "Can't Buy Me Love". Spending 4 weeks at the #1 position, it reached there in its second week. Debuting at #27, it took an unprecedented leap to #1 the following week. By the way, it reached #1 the week of April 4, 1964, a date well known to Beatles and Billboard Hot 100 fans. The Beatles held down the top 5 positions that week and 12 of the Top 100. The following week 2 more of their songs would enter to Hot 100 to bring the total to 14. If the numbers weren't mind-boggling enough, on the April 4 survey "All My Loving" was at #58, and "Roll Over Beethoven" was at #68. These 45s weren't even officially released in the US. Record stores were importing them from Canada, as they were released on the Capitol Of Canada label. If you've ever heard of the Cryan' Shames, their cover of the Searchers "Sugar and Spice" [pgfromwp's "Extra"] is much better in my opinion. Unfortunately, it proved to be their largest hit nationally, peaking at #49. If you get a chance, give their music a listen. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fe7RlzkVS3U

Debuting at #27, it took an unprecedented leap to #1 the following week. And, as I've just learned in the past hour from listening to the May 14, 1977 AT40 on WMGN Madison, the ONLY other record in the rock era (through May 77, anyway) that managed the same second week at #1 feat was--believe it or not--Sheb Wooley's "The Purple People Eater"! Amazing.

Debuting at #27, it took an unprecedented leap to #1 the following week. "Can't Buy Me Love" spent five weeks at #1, including its own week two entry spot, during the 1964 chart weeks that ended on 4/04, 4/11, 4/18, 4/25 and 5/02. Interestingly, "Hello, Dolly" (at 5/09/64) broke a streak of 14 consecutive chart date weeks that The Beatles occupied the #1 spot in the Billboard hot 100 from 2/01/64 through 5/02/64. The latter song's (incidental?) accomplishment is probably just as noteworthy.

Please reply with your answer directly to this thread. That would be the Turtles. Their "Movin' Up" song "She'd Rather Be With Me" was the follow-up single to their #1 hit "Happy Together". Great countdown. Thanks for the "It's Cold Outside" inclusion. At the time of the release, members of the band included Wally Bryson, Dave Smalley, and Jim Bonfanti. After the band broke up, these three members would join with Eric Carmen and form the Raspberries. Ironically, Eric had auditioned to join the Choir after there were personnel changes, but was rejected!

Bumping it up to post the 12th in this year's series of pre-AT40 countdowns, and the last from 1970. This is my personal favorite, as it includes many outstanding songs from the underplayed Spring 1970 season; further, it is bookended by two classic hits about human kindness. I've added a second "outsider" song (again, difficult to choose one), plus a new feature: the "bubbled under" song that would make significant progress in the next few chart weeks (and is a great rendition of Beethoven's ninth symphony, which was featured as excerpted in one of my favorite childhood films, "A Clockwork Orange".) Enough digression. This PRE-AT40 COUNTDOWN features the top 20 songs of June 6, 1970. The Beatles' "Long And Winding Road" would leap into the #1 position the following week, representing the biggest mover from the 6/6/70 pre-AT 40 countdown. It would be the last #1 for the Beatles.
