A while back I was scanning through a thread titled "AT40: The 60's", wherein an inquiry about what countdowns of chart dates prior to the inception of Casey's AT40 shows would be like gave me the idea to compile such countdown charts and eventually launch this thread. Every two weeks, I will be posting a countdown of the top 20 songs (plus a few additional hits) of a hot 100 chart date from January 4, 1964 through July 4, 1970 -- hence, the "Pre-AT40" modifier. Each song will have a hyperlink to an on-line music player. I'm doing this to share my interest in this diverse period of popular music with readers of this site, and not to compete with any similar countdowns over radio broadcasts. This PRE-AT40 COUNTDOWN features the top 20 songs of January 2, 1965. On with the countdown … Chart Pos. 20 "Time is on My Side" - Rolling Stones (6) www.youtube.com/watch?v=XzcWwmwChVE19 "How Sweet It Is" - Marvin Gaye (6) www.youtube.com/watch?v=MEAJDm8QqZM18 "Willow Weep for Me" - Chad & Jeremy (15) www.youtube.com/watch?v=MQQfuk8cU-s17 "Any Way You Want It" - Dave Clark Five (14) www.youtube.com/watch?v=INgNG5a5yQE The following song was moving up the hot 100 to eventually peak within the top 20 … MOVIN' UP "The Name Game" - Shirley Ellis (3) www.youtube.com/watch?v=NeF7jqf0GU4Now, back to the countdown … 16 "My Love Forgive Me" - Robert Goulet (16) www.youtube.com/watch?v=mu6mi9byKCw15 "Keep Searchin'" - Del Shannon (9) www.youtube.com/watch?v=AUoiULDzZ0U14 "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" - Righteous Bros. (1) www.youtube.com/watch?v=8QaASwKbUGE13 "Sha La La" - Manfred Mann (12) www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xz2CXDFmz5w The following song charted outside the top 20 on January 2, 1965, and peaked there … OUTSIDER "Look of Love" - Lesley Gore (27) www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGVUmjN4caENow, back to the countdown … 12 "Downtown" - Petula Clark (1) www.youtube.com/watch?v=FKCnHWas3HQ11 "Ringo" - Lorne Greene (1) www.youtube.com/watch?v=noER_E34jr410 "The Wedding" - Julie Rogers (10) www.youtube.com/watch?v=UjIE_F8PmUU9 "The Jerk" - Larks (7) www.youtube.com/watch?v=wzJqjgdzIW4 Here's a lost oldie from January 2, 1965 … EXTRA "The 81" - Candy & the Kisses (51) www.youtube.com/watch?v=chiuLdoLqSsNow, back to the countdown … 8 "Amen" - Impressions (7) www.youtube.com/watch?v=WMZcUZQ8C787 "She's Not There" - Zombies (2) www.youtube.com/watch?v=it68QbUWVPM6 "Goin' out of My Head" - Little Anthony & the Imperials (6) www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wu9moZvdUTA5 "Love Potion #9" - Searchers (3) www.youtube.com/watch?v=7rXhXLsNJL8 Let's go back 6 years. The following song was #1 on January 2, 1959 … 6-BACK "The Chipmunk Song" - David Seville & the Chipmunks www.youtube.com/watch?v=_qoPlFREKnUNow, back to the countdown … 4 "She's a Woman" - Beatles (4) www.youtube.com/watch?v=UIQRjT3_hG83 "Mr Lonely" - Bobby Vinton (1) www.youtube.com/watch?v=JWTscepbZws2 "Come See About Me" - Supremes (1) www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQB42ljf50g1 "I Feel Fine" - Beatles (1) www.youtube.com/watch?v=iXU5hzgxpUY Parenthesized notation indicates peak position. Recognition is given to my references: billboard magazine archives; the ultimate music database; Joel Whitburn's billboard book of top 40 hits; also to you-tube for providing access to the actual music. The next countdown, in two weeks, will feature the top 20 from the hot 100 chart date of January 20, 1968, along with similar bonus hits -- I'll be taking requests for the "lost oldie" from that chart date on this thread (it must be from that hot 100 chart and preferably have peaked far below the top 20).

So, you don't mind if I actually *record* these, do you?
"Live from Hollywood, This is American Top 40 - the 60s. I'm Jay Ashworth, sitting in for Casey Kasem this week because he isn't even a DJ yet."

I finally read the first post in this thread, rather than just my brother's comment (he called and told me about his post) and the one following his. Ironic. The original poster was inspired by another thread, which was started by me...

Staffed? Anyway, if we're taking requests, I'd like something from 1969 - before June.

And now that I've read the *entire* first post - Cool!
Trivia: Bobby Vinton's first name is Stanley (from my current reading Who's Your Face Rave - about Gloria Stavers and 16 Magazine, because I recently finished Rock, Roll & Remember, where Dick Clark mentioned Gloria). I always wondered about the last name, as it didn't sound Polish. Kocham ciebie w całym sercem... His forebears probably came from the part of Poland that was German prior to 1945--much of western Poland and some of northern Poland falls into this category, just as parts of what had been eastern Poland were suddenly part of the USSR (Lithuania and Belarus today). No country has had it's boundaries change more over the past hundred years as Poland.

oops, mga - I forgot about that. (I read Poland twice, watched some of the PBS?) series in 90s? used to be able to sing the national anthem... Not a drop of Polish in me. I just didn't want to learn Cyrillic. And I had a crash on a guy (whose English was perfect).

You wouldn't have had to learn those extra letters--the Polish language uses the Roman alphabet, albeit with plenty of diacritical(?--I think that's the term) marks over and through some of the letters. Doesn't seem like the easiest language to learn, though--Spanish is a lot easier!

Bumping it up to post the second in this year's series of pre-AT40 countdowns. The first one (1/02/65) generated mimimal feedback; however, I'm hopeful that this one will spur dialogue about the merits of certain charted songs, memories of that particular time period -- a chart critique, perhaps? My suggestion for an extra is the song that would be the first Beatles song ever heard by millions of (especially older) Americans, because it was the first song they sang on The Ed Sullivan Show in just about one week.
