I've been listening to a couple of the guest hosted shows. These shows are proof that Casey is what made the countdown so great. Even though they are reading the same script that Casey would have read, it's not the same. The guest shows I've heard are Bob Eubanks, Keri Tombazian and Dick Clark. I've heard Dick Clarks own show and he sounds fine on that, but on AT40 he sounds out of place. Maybe some of the other guest hosts were better, but these ones make you miss Casey.

Charlie Van Dyke rocked - he may have been just a cut below Casey, but I thought he did a terrific job with the shows and was very enjoyable to listen to. Some of the others weren't quite as good. Kari Tombazian was interesting and Mark Elliot was pretty good too.

CVD and Mark Elliott are probably the two most associated with the guest hosting duties though most of Marks were on Casey's Top 40. A few months ago I heard a David Perry guest hosted show too and in a thread apologized for the two decades of insulting I've done at his expense. He was clearly better than most anyone else on the radio now. This is something radio is severely missing and other than us, no one seems to care....personality. These guys could all read the same thing and do it completely different, yet compelling.

I have the first-ever guest-hosted show from 1971 - with Dave Hull, A/K/A "The Hullabalooer." It was painfully obvious that he had no prior experience doing syndicated radio!

If a guest host didn't have the right listener appeal behind the AT40 microphone, it's not that person's fault. You need to blame the producer of the show. In the case of Dave Hull, producer Don Bustany gave him some flexibility to allow for a little of the Hullabalooer's on-air personality. And that's exactly what he delivered. With this being the first program without Casey, I believe it was a really good show. And it was likely a good learning experience for the Casey-less AT40 staff. Let's see a show of hands of those who have heard future American Country Countdown host Don Bowman sitting in for Casey (on June 16, 1973). While I treasure that program as well, he was obviously there for no other reason other than to gain experience as a countdown program host. His country-flavored style was, in my opinion, a little out of place to be introducing songs such as "Hocus Pocus" and "Frankenstein", and artists such as Barry White and Alice Cooper. Nevertheless, it's a part of AT40 history and I, for one, embrace it.

I thought the 4/16/83 show, hosted by Bob Eubanks, was kind of odd, because I was so used to seeing Bob's personality on shows like Card Sharks (on GSN). So, to hear him be so laid-back during the show...it was quite different.

(He likely was trying to make a difficult situation as comfortable as possible for himself.) Some choice quotes that I enjoyed most: "... And on the countdown this week four fell off and four brand new ones came on, which makes it nice cuz that leaves us with an even forty......""I'm Don Bowman, and my bag is mainly country music... so this whole deal should be a brand new experience for all of us.""There's Perry Como and 'I Love You So', produced by the only name I recognize so far, Chet Atkins. Now that, I recognize.""This is Don Bowman sitting in for the sickly Casey Kasem who, I guarantee you, will be back next week... hehe, after hearing this he may be back in the last hour!"Not being a country music fan I had never heard his name before I first listened to this show a few months ago, but upon hearing it I'm almost tempted to find some of his ACC hosted shows.

unclesox, Best Music Expert is currently re-running old ACC shows on his Veetle channel. He's played a couple Bowman shows in the past.

I remember Gary Owens guest-hosting AT40 in 1981, and though his style was far removed from that of Casey's, he still did remarkably well.

At the time, I also listened to another Watermark show, Soundtrack of the '60s, which Owens hosted as well. (He had taken over when original host Murray the K became ill and later died.)

Joe Cipriano hosted on July 23, 1994 and he is the Charlie Van Dyke of the 90´s. It´s only an episode, but it is excellent and the door for the forthcoming show, daughter of AT40 , in the international market, once AT40 ended on January 28, 1995, The World Chart Show, with Ace & Joe.
What a legend of 2 hosts.

I was very surprised when I first heard that show - I recognized his voice immediately, but until then, had no idea that Gary was the man behind it. Suffice it to say, I'm glad I traded for that one.

To comment on what Pete said last year, I heard Don Bowmans guest hosted version a few weeks ago. Awful. I know he died recently and I don't mean to stomp on the mans grave but he was awful as a host of any show. I've heard a couple of his ACC shows too and they are terrible. The stupid jokes and so-called humor at the end of nearly every segment and many other songs is horrid.

I also give the Don Bowman show low marks. When he says that Chet Atkins was the first name he recognized thus far in the show, he'd already played songs by The Carpenters and Carly Simon. Seriously, he'd never heard of either of those? BS!
When promoting the upcoming "One Hit Wonders" show, he actually pronounced the word "Huge" as "Hooj!" I have never heard that in my life, before or since. (Also, although Casey said the words "Disappearing Acts" during every promo for that show, for weeks in advance of its broadcast, Bowman never says that phrase. I mean, it is the name of the show!!!)
He takes a massive dump on Alice Cooper - which at least goes to show how the "mainstream" world viewed him at the time. Bless Casey for always giving props to Mr. Cooper.
Not really his fault, as he was clearly reading a script, but he rarely said if a song had moved up, or down from the previous week. And never says the word "notch!"
He tells an amusing story about how Paul Simon wrote "Kodachrome" with the words "Going Home" as the title, but felt that you could not write a song called "Going Home." Three weeks later the Osmonds would debut on the Top 40 with...
He badly stumbles while trying to say "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy," especially at the outro. Surprised they didn't let him give it another try. Embarrassing!
He doesn't make a prediction about next week's number one, or even acknowledge the pick from the previous week.
His sibilant "SSSsss" got annoying real quick!

I've heard the scoped version of the Don Bowman show as well as some of his ACC episodes (when such countdowns were on YouTube, before removal for presumably for copyright reasons.) He was talented, but while a little humour in hosting is fine and even welcome, ultimately they're countdowns, not comedy shows.
He seems out of place for AT40--which as mentioned was maybe a practice run for doing the country show, though his self-deprecation at times was good. On ACC, the jokes and funny one liners at the end of so many segments quickly get distracting. He sounded like he was hosting a three hour radio version of "Hee Haw".
