Hi, everybody ! When I was listening to the AT40 the 80's show from Sep. 13th 1986, I noticed that Casey mis-pronouced an artist name. That is Swiss duo "DOUBLE". Their song The Captain of Her Heart is at number 16. Casey said the same pronunciation as the general :Dword "double" which means twice. But according to Joel Whitburn's chart book, it should be pronouced as "doo-BLAY".
I also remember back in 1994, in Casey's Top 40, when a jazz influenced act US3's song "Cantaloop" debuted, he called them U-S-three. But the right pronunciation is "us three" ( us of we, our, us), not "U-S-three". Later when that song peaked the chart, Casey rightly called them "us three".

The "Double" thing was a common mistake. We didn't have AT40 in Tucson during the summer of 1986, but we had 2 other shows (Dick Clark and Countdown America, or maybe Countdown USA) -- and I'm pretty sure I only remember it being pronounced like the English word "double."

Ah, good ol' Countdown America and Countdown USA. Back in the glory years when there were so many different countdown shows going on.
I seem to remember at least one of the shows, maybe Countdown USA, properly pronouncing Double. I think it was John Leader hosting it back in 1986 (Dave Scholen took over maybe January of 87?). I think it was Leader who said it correctly.

Actually, on a Countdown America with Dick Clark show that I have (can't remember the exact show off the top of my head), there is a clip of one of the members of the band introducing himself and he pronounces the name of the band "Double" just like the English word. So I'm inclined to believe an actual member of the band over Joel Whitburn.

Well then that's a twist.
I swear wikipedia used to confirm the doo-blay pronounciation. But looking now, the article has been changed and it doesn't say either way. When I try to look at the pre-edited version of the article, I simply get the message:
"I completely rewrote the article, changed it and made it a good article."
No, sir or madam, a "good" article would address the pronounciation, as the original article did before you hacked it up.
Hey Jeffster, is that Countdown America with Dick Clark based on the regular top 40 chart, or had they already switched to the AC chart? Or do you know or even care? I haven't been able to find any of the Dick Clark shows from the mid-80s aside from when it switched to AC.

I'm pretty sure that the doo-blay pronounciation was used here in Europe (Germany) when the song was a hit. If you want a second opinion, why not go to the "crap from the past" archives ( www.crapfromthepast.com/playlists/2003.htm) and play the show from 2003 that has the title...

On last week's AT40 the 80's (May 14th, 1988), when Casey introduced the number one song "Anything For You" by Gloria Estefan & Miami Sound Machine, he referred to the pronunciation of "Estefan". He admitted that many artists were mis-pronouced their names, such as Irene Cara, Bachman-Turner Overdrive, Sade, and Rick Ocasek (of the Cars). He corrected pronouncing "Estefan" by quoting Gloria's own voice. He even quoted when he introduced the number one song under a number one drum roll, Casey said, "the new number one song in the U.S.A. is by Gloria" and "Estefan" by Gloria's own voice and Casey continued to say "and Miami Sound Machine, Anything For You". It was fun to hear. Casey chuckled, too.

So which was it?
"e-STEF-an" or "ES-te-fan" ??
I'm guessing "e-STEF-an" is correct...

I believe it was "eh- STEHF-an". But Gloria said it in an accent that made the eh sound a little like a long A sound.

Well the Estefan case is simple, make a little accent in the second “E”. That word in spanish does not have accent in its writing, but if it has it, then it would be like:
“Estéfan”

He pronounces words in "Modern American English" but not in "American Broadcast English", if that makes any sense. You see he often says "double ya" instead of "double you". Then another thing enunciation, for example Sting's "If You Love Somebody Set 'Em Free". It should be "them" as opposed to "em". I just trip when I hear these words in fun laughter. Nonetheless, I still loooove this man, man!

I believe Casey said “doo-BLAY” at least once on AT10.
Also, Casey said “duh-MOB” while Shadoe said “DEE-mob.”

Tucson didn't even carry Rick Dees Weekly Top 40 at the 1986 time? I wonder if Rick Dees said the "Double" name correctly or incorrectly when it made the Weekly Top 40?

2009 to 2022--wow. I think this is a new record for a dead thread springing back to life. And in 2007 there was someone else on here from Tucson, about five years before I discovered these boards. Wonder why 'coldcardinal' went silent?
