What was with the weird speedup during "Shame On the Moon" on WEZG? Like someone setting their 45rpm on 78 for a second. And again with Thomas Dolby...

What was with the weird speedup during "Shame On the Moon" on WEZG? Like someone setting their 45rpm on 78 for a second. And again with Thomas Dolby... Wow, that really happened? I was watching videos on Google and I thought that was causing the songs to speed up. Also, did you notice that one of the station's filler songs was "Back On The Chain Gang", just about a half an hour after it was played in the countdown? You know, I just might make this my regular Friday afternoon AT40 station. WWIS isn't bad, but they just have so many commercials, and news at the top of every hour, causing the show to last until close to 5:30 in some cases. (And I definitely agree about those d**n Flo from Progresive ads. Enough is enough! They're getting to be just as annoying as Mom whining and sniveling about the day her son Jeremy told her that he hated her and slammed the door in her face).

Next week has another double dose on tap. The "A" show is new, and is from 4/18/1981: www.charismusicgroup.com/Cue%20Sheets/04-18-81.pdfThe "B" show previously aired in 2010, and is from 4/20/1985: www.charismusicgroup.com/Cue%20Sheets/04-20-85.pdfThe 1985 extras are the same as in 2010: "Smuggler's Blues" - Glenn Frey "Never Ending Story" - Limahl "Voices Carry" - 'Til Tuesday "Heaven" - Bryan Adams John Lennon gets a triple play in the 1981 show, as all three hits from Double Fantasy will be heard ("Starting Over" is a LDD). Also, count on only one show for the last week of April, however. (With 1985 as an "A" show last week and a "B" show next week, and 1983 airing this week, I'd place money on this being either 1984, or maybe 1982.)

(With 1985 as an "A" show last week and a "B" show next week, and 1983 airing this week, I'd place money on this being either 1984, or maybe 1982.) In that case, I guess it'll be 4/28/84, since so far this year only 1983 and 1984 have been standalones. (Why 1985 and 1986, and probably 1982, need alternates is a mystery to me, especially when the B is only a year or two apart from it, but whatever.) 4/28/84 is a rerun, aired in 2007 and 2009, but not in the last six years. 4/18/81 is the first regular 1981 "A" show offered since early last December (not counting B's and the special Gary Owens airing) Predicted extras: "Jessie's Girl"-Rick Springfield "A Woman Needs Love"-Ray Parker Jr. & Raydio "Stars On 45 Medley" (self-explanatory) "Find Your Way Back"-Jefferson Starship

Since 4/18/81 is one of six 1980-81 AT40 shows that I acquired on the original LPs back in 1982, I guess I can listen to it at my leisure anytime next week! No Flo!

Unfortunately, I have to work next Friday, so no listening to it on WEZG, so I'll have to grit my teeth with the Flo ads. Well, unless AT40: The 80s gets a new sponsor... HAH! Fat chance!

I just noticed a curiosity about this week's 4/9/83 chart, or, more precisely, what was just outside of this chart: Five of six five songs at numbers 41 through 46 would not quite make the 40. At 41 and 42, "Take the Short Way Home" by Dionne Warwick and "The Fanatic" by Felony were as high as they would get. 44 was "Minimum Love" by Mac Mcannaly, which also would peak at 41, and at 45 was John Anderson's big country hit "Swingin'", which would peak at 43. At 46 was The Psychedelic Furs' well-known "Love My Way", which would only manage to get to 44. Only "Straight From the Heart" at 43 would make the 40 and become Bryan Adams' first of many hits. This had to be a rare pileup of 'almost' top 40 hits all together.

OK time for P&D for 4/18/81 Big choice this week as 9 of the bottom 20 failed to make the Top 20. Again here's 3 that still get lots of rock radio play despite not hitting the Top 25. 1. Loverboy "Turn Me Loose" 2. Journey "The Party's Over (Hopelessly In Love)" 3. .38 Special "Hold On Loosely" Here's another R&B song that deserved better The Whispers "It's A Love Thing" Now the dump I'm picking A Taste Of Honey's "Sukiyaki" (Did we really need a remake of this & to make it worse we had 4P.M. do it again in 95) Finally here's 2 that debuted this week that you never hear except on these AT40 the 80's shows. 1. The Rovers "Wasn't That A Party" (You'd think stations that play 80's party music would play this one) 2. John O'Banion "Love You Like I Never Loved Before" (It made #24 so you'd think some 80's stations would play it today)

(Why 1985 and 1986, and probably 1982, need alternates is a mystery to me, especially when the B is only a year or two apart from it, but whatever.) I'm thinking that sometime soon we'll be seeing 1982 stand alone for at least the remainder of the year. With 4/24/82 having aired in 2012, though...I'm not so sure that'll turn out to be next week. Even curiouser: Dionne's song made it to #17 on R&R, while Felony didn't chart. This was in the dwindling months of R&R going down to 30 (would last only two more months), but it's particularly strange that these two were back-to-back and peaking right outside the 40. That Dionne made R&R and not AT40 at all is itself strange, but that fact alone exacerbates the other. Sales must have been especially low for her song, while for Felony's, it could be that airplay + sales were more balanced or that airplay was especially weak (seen also later in '83 with Mtume's "Juicy Fruit", a certified million-seller despite peaking at #45; that song also missed R&R).
