Either I missed it or Casey didn't go through the list of 'droppers' on this weeks show.. Does anybody know which songs these were? The droppers were "Mickey" by Toni Basil, "Shock The Monkey" by Peter Gabriel, "Hand To Hold On To" by John Cougar, and "Bad Boy" by Ray Parker Jr.

^You did not miss anything. Casey is not mentioning the droppers at this time. He will starting near the end of 1983.

I'm not sure that would be the reason there - case in point, "Endless Love" only a year and a half prior. No, "Billie Jean" had to follow "The Girl is Mine", which wasn't as well-received, also missed #1, and had threatened to derail the entire Thriller project until BJ put doubts to rest. I'd have loved to have been a fly on the wall at Epic when they were deciding on a first single for Thriller. It's not like they didn't have a precedent to follow - just 3 years earlier, they'd released the two strongest tracks on Off the Wall as singles 1 & 2 and were rewarded with 2 platinum #1s. Were they thinking "ooh, we got Paul McCartney, crossover time!"?

Were they thinking "ooh, we got Paul McCartney, crossover time!"? The worm probably turned within the next year. When Paul put out his next album, "Pipes of Peace", in fall 1983, Columbia probably had no doubts about the first single: "'Say Say Say'--we've got Michael Jackson--instant smash!"

If you thought it didn't make sense that they would offer a "B" show alongside the 1986 show last month...well, get ready for an even bigger head-scratcher. Next weekend, the "B" show is once again 1980 (2/16, previously aired in 2011): www.charismusicgroup.com/Cue%20Sheets/02-16-80.pdfThe "A" show? It's new - 2/16/1985: www.charismusicgroup.com/Cue%20Sheets/02-16-85.pdfNeedless to say, I'm not expecting anyone to go for 1980 on this one, either. Why on earth Premiere even felt compelled to offer a "B" show alongside a 1985 show...your guess is as good as mine. BTW, the extras for 1980 will remain the same from the 2011 airing. Much too tired to look them up right this moment though. Good night!

I just realized the 2/12/83 show, while new on Premiere, has previously been played on XM Radio when they did play the Casey 80's show.

Ken, does your station play all of the optional extras for both shows? (Note: if Ken cannot answer before this weekend, can someone here check?) This weekend, yes, all the extras will air (both 70's and 80's). It will push the countdown into overtime and run a few minutes over.

This seems to be the opposite of what it had been during the first 2 or 3 years of "B" shows. The 70s series had more years with "B" show options, in fact, they had all of them because there was no such thing as a "B" show option for the 80s series. Now there appears to be more years with "B" show options for the 80s series than the 70s series. 1983 and 84 seem to be the only stand alone "A" show years in the 80s while the 70s still have 1974-78 as stand alone "A" show years.

Much too tired to look them up right this moment though. Good night! This seems backwards to me. I could see 1985 being offered as the "B" show if 1980 were the "A". But since 1985 is literally right in the middle of the decade (unlike 1987 or 1988), I don't see why anyone who decides to run the 1980s series would need an alternate to it, unless maybe their research shows that their audience greatly prefers late 70s/very early 80s music. We haven't had 1982 yet this year, so I'm not sure about that. Nor have we had 1980 or 1981 as an "A", though IMO when they are featured it would make sense to offer something from later in the decade as an alternative now that Premiere is doing so for the 80s. For the 1970s, it's 1973-September 1978 that don't get "B" choices; last month Premiere played the very first week of 1973 with no alternate choice.

Great article! I'd forgotten how inhospitable Top 40 had gotten for " urban" music, so the Trojan horse strategy makes perfect sense.
