Ken, does your station play all of the optional extras for both shows? (Note: if Ken cannot answer before this weekend, can someone here check?) Negative... some of the extras are played, but not always. For instance, this last week for the 70's show, WTOJ did not (as I recall) play the Poco extra. The show may still run a few minutes over due to the commercial load.

About half the guessers this week guessed two out of four; nobody guessed more. Nor did anyone guess the first of these.
This week's extras:
Neil Diamond - I'm Alive After the Fire - Der Kommissar Thompson Twins - Lies Eric Clapton - I've Got a Rock & Roll Heart

I just posted this week's extras, right above you. Counting your tiebreaker, you managed to go 0 for 5.

Prediction for next week's show:
1st Guess: 2/16/85 2nd Guess: 2/14/81
Feels like it should be 1985--and if it isn't this week, 1985 should be a lock for next week. Second guess may just be window dressing...

Casey mentions that "Mr. Roboto" enters the Hot 100 at #40 but he does not say that it is the 4th consecutive week that a single enters the Hot 100 within the top 40. It is the longest such streak in the pre-Soundscan era. Started with "All Right" entering at 29 3 weeks prior, and then a couple that entered at 36..."We've Got Tonight" and "Separate Ways". This is the end of the streak. None of these records reached #1 with Styx being the only ones to come close. BTW, a song that did reach #1 did debut during this period and it was "Billie Jean". Tells you how much resistance there was to black artists at this time that a huge hit like that by a superstar like him did not even enter the chart inside the top 40.

I'm not sure that would be the reason there - case in point, "Endless Love" only a year and a half prior.
No, "Billie Jean" had to follow "The Girl is Mine", which wasn't as well-received, also missed #1, and had threatened to derail the entire Thriller project until BJ put doubts to rest.
Incidentally, the fact that "Billie Jean" was a second single is another contrast it has with that four-song stretch; those were all lead singles bringing their artists back to the top 40 (all of whom except for Kenny had also been away for as many as six months or longer).

^That's a good point. BTW, nice to have you back.
There are 2 pairs of songs that are back to back for the second of at least 10 weeks that they are back to back. I have no idea what the record for this type of thing is and I am not about to try to figure it out. Would make vince's work on the year end charts seem trivial when we know it's not. Anyway, tied for the biggest movers are "One on One" and "Separate Ways". They will be back to back for 10 weeks while in the top 40. But even more tied together are "Hungry Like the Wolf" and "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me". They will be back to back for 10 consecutive weeks and 11 weeks all told. Kind of appropriate considering they are the most associated groups with the British new romantic rock at this time and those are their first US hits. Both sets of songs will indeed peak at back to back positions, 7 and 8 for Hall & Oates and Journey with Steve Perry & co. spending a record 6 weeks at 8 and 2 and 3 for CC and DD.

Another factor to consider with "The Girl Is Mine" versus "Billie Jean" is that the former did not have a video, which by late 1982 was a huge mistake on Columbia's part. "Billie Jean", of course, had an absolutely classic video that still stands the test of time. Classic song plus classic video equals huge #1 record.

Here's my pump & dump for 2/12/83 First the pumps 1. Saga "On The Loose" (Rather hear it once in a while instead of fellow Canadian act Loverboy) 2. A Flock Of Seagulls "Space Age Love Song" (Instead of hearing "I Ran (So Far Away)" all the time) 3. Moving Pictures "What About Me" (Still gets play on some 80's stations but deserved to go higher) Now the dump Pia Zadora "The Clapping Song" (I think there is a reason this only made #36, I apologize too anyone that liked this but it sounds like something she'd sing on Sesame Street)

Kudos to WWIS, for not ending the '80s show early! Just curious: Why is ending early an issue for you? I personally don't care if it ends early, as long as it doesn't start early. I just hate it when it drags on and ends late due to excessively long breaks. Thankfully that hasn't been an problem on WWIS for awhile, since they stopped reading the local obituaries between two of the hours! Today they started about ten minutes late but still ended on time. That's fine with me.

The original "Clapping Song" was Shirley's follow-up to "The Name Game" in 1965. Pia did have a awesome you-know-what back in the day...

Either I missed it or Casey didn't go through the list of 'droppers' on this weeks show.. Does anybody know which songs these were?
