Wow the stars have totally lined up this time. 2 shows from August 16th with the 80s show having Madonna hitting #1 on her birthday. In Joel Whitburn's most recent Pop Singles book, Madonna was ranked #3 behind the Beatles and Elvis. Madonna obviously was born on August 16th with Elvis dying on that date. So the top 2 solo artists in the rock era either were born or died on that date. Oh one more thing...August 16th is my birthday, born 2 years after the former Miss Ciccone.

Y'know something, I get yelled at every time I try to pick a country song that has some modicum of interest to CHR that never made the Hot 100, or even the adult contemporary chart. About this time in August 1986, the song "You're Still New to Me" by Paul Davis and Marie Osmond – Paul one of the bigger names in pop music from 1978 to about 1983, Marie having a string of Hot 100-charting hits in the mid-1970s – is a prime example. It had the sound of a mid-1980s pop hit, but never charted. Go figure. Must be that fragmentation starting to kick in
But I digress. I won't pick that as an extra this week. Instead, it'll be the following:
• "Throwing It All Away" – Genesis. • "Take Me Home Tonight/Be My Baby" – Eddie Money f. Ronnie Spector. • "I Didn't Mean to Turn You On" – Robert Palmer. • "Press" – Paul McCartney.

Fantastic! Not only was this my prediction for this weekend's show, it will also give ma all five August 1986 countdowns in my collection. I'll then be only four shows away from my goal of acquiring every AT40 from May thru August of '86.
On to the Op Ex picks for 8/16/86. Lots of ways this could go, as there are a plethora of future hits below the 40.
Throwing It All Away - GENESIS When I Think Of You - JANET JACKSON I Didn't Mean To Turn You On - ROBERT PALMER Paranoimia - ART OF NOISE with MAX HEADROOM

Brian It would be the equivalent of picking the song " A Little Bit More" by Melba Moore with Freddie Jackson as a op extra. Neither track has a connection to pop radio regardless of track record of the artists involved.

Good point, but there was no bubbling under chart from mid-August 1985 through November 1992, a little more than seven years. We can only guess at the songs that would have bubbled under during that period. I was 25 in 1986, so I was listening to adult contemporary radio more. It would be like me choosing Gordon LIghtfoot's then-current AC hit "Anything for Love" as an optional extra. I'd guess it would have peaked at 108-112 if there had been a Bubbling Under chart in August 1986. The same goes for Neil Diamond's "The Story of My Life," an AC-only song that did receive some airplay on a pop station near me 28 years ago.
