Here's an easy question. What do the following acts have in common? If no one gets it after a while, I'll add an additional artist that should give it away.
Billy Joel R.E.M. Frank Sinatra The Supremes The Vogues The Who

Sorry, Blackbowl. Not the correct answer, but not a bad guess. Except for R.E.M., everyone did hit the charts with a song beginning with "My" (R.E.M. had "Losing My Religion", which was close).
I'll add another name to the list (though this isn't the name that will give it away): Louis Armstrong.

Did they all have hit songs that later became TV themes? BINGO! Louis Armstrong's "What A Wonderful World" (briefly) became the theme to "Family Matters" Paula Cole's "I Don't Want To Wait" became the theme to "Dawson's Creek" Bily Joel's "My Life" became the theme to "Bosom Buddies" R.E.M.'s "Stand" became the theme to "Get a Life" Frank Sinatra's "Love and Marriage" became the theme to "Married with Children" The Supremes' "Reflections" became the theme to "China Beach" The Vogues' "Five O'Clock World" became the theme to "The Drew Carey Show" The Who's "Who Are You" and "Won't Get Fooled Again" became the themes to "CSI" and "CSI: Miami", respectively The artist I was going to add that I thought would give it away was Andrew Gold, whose "Thank You For Being A Friend" became the theme to "The Golden Girls".

[ . . . ] That leads to the question. Which #1 song has more titles of other #1 songs in its lyrics? I've found one that contains the titles of three others -- in fact, it contains seven titles which had made the Top Three as of its own ascendancy to the Top Spot! (Two additional phrases would later become song titles for a #3 and a #4 song, and one of the above-mentioned seven Top Three titles would also subsequently become the title of a different Top Three song...) This ought to be enough information to determine whether "dukedeb" and I are thinking about the same song...

They each hit #1 on the dance chart in 1990, and top 40 on the BB Hot 100. Is that what you were looking for?

That's correct, that's absolutely correct!!! All of them had to wait at least 10 years between their first Top 40 hit and their first No. 1 hit. Gladys Knight and the Pips "Every Beat of My Heart" (first Top 40 in 1961) "Midnight Train to Georgia" (First No. 1 in 1973) Aerosmith "Sweet Emotion" (first Top 40 in 1975) "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing" (First No. 1 in 1998) Chuck Berry "Maybelline" (first Top 40 in 1955) "My Ding-A-Ling" (first No. 1 in 1972) Santana "Evil Ways" (first Top 40 in 1970) "Smooth" (first No. 1 in 1999) Johnny Mathis "Wonderful, Wonderful" (first Top 40 in 1957) "Too Much, Too Little, Too Late" (first No. 1 in 1978).
