The five songs below peaked at #2 on the Billboard chart: All I Need-Jack Wagner Mama's Pearl-Jackson 5 Mercedes Boy-Pebbles More Than I can Say-Leo Sayer Queen of Hearts-Juice Newton As far as I can tell, these songs have something uniquely in common with only one other Top 2 single between 1970 & 1989. What is this song? Wrong question. Should have been, there is another song that has something in common but with these songs. But that song stands out among the 6. What is it? The 5 songs above, in addition to peaking at #2, spent 2 weeks a Never mind!

It's "Bad Blood" by Neil Sedaka. You are correct. While the other 5 songs spent their entire Top 5 run at #2, "Bad Blood" spent its entire Top 5 run at #1. "Bad Blood" is the only song I know of that did this from the Hot 100 beginning in 1958 through 1991. "Stayin' Alive" spent time @ #2 & #1. "Which Way You Goin' Billy" and "Use Me" also spent time @ #4. "Lean On Me" spent 3 weeks @ #1 like the Sedaka song but its run was 4-1-1-1-9. "Bad Blood" run was 6-1-1-1-8. "Whatever Gets You Through the Night" is a 1974 song featuring Elton John. "Bad Blood" is a 1975 song featuring Elton John.

I knew the theme of this question the moment I saw three of the records listed. I originally guessed "Stayin' Alive" because after it fell from the top spot, it went from 6-2-2-2-2-2-11.

^Yeah, I know. This was just my way to get to why I brought up "Lean On Me" & how close the John Lennon song was to the actual answer.

As I listen to the first show in the second incarnation of AT40 that happened on today's date in 1998, here is a trivial note. First of all, there are historic shows in all '8' years that Casey announced AT40 shows. 10/7/78 was the first 4 hour show, 8/6/88 was his last show in the first run and this 3/28/98 show is the first in the second incarnation. One act has songs in all 3 shows....Aerosmith. And not by much, "Come Together" that was in the 1978 show fell out 2 weeks later and Steve Tyler and company were nowhere to be found on AT40 for another 9 years. The album that included their comeback song also includes their song in the 1988 show..."Rag Doll". And like "Come Together", their song in the 1998 show, "Pink" also fell off the 40 in 2 weeks.

All of the above have something in common between 1970 & 1989. What is the connection?
Clues: I find it interesting that The Supremes last appearance on the Hot 100 was when Blue Oyster Cult was making their first chart appearance. There are so many on this list for a reason. The ranking is based in part on artist highest charting single. One-hit wonders were dropped back. For artist that had Top 20 singles, this happened about 3 times a year on average between 1970 & 1989. It is about the artist.
Answer: This is a Top 40 list of artists who spent their last week ever in the Top 40 between 1970 & 1989 at #40. The songs listed above are the last Top 40 Singles of the acts.
