To u2rules:
"Fairytale" was not that much of a gamble on their part... their parents were from Arkansas (same state as our friend Shannon Lynn) and country wasn't at all strange to them.
It's a 'goosebumper' for me as well, even all these years later... ain't many that can say that.
Edit: I'm guessing that WKIX is all-Christmas as of last Friday, which explains the absence of the Premiere cue sheets. dL

Kool 108 (KQQL) started playing 80's shows a few months ago - they still claim to play both, but it's been all 80's that I can remember lately. They are playing Xmas music now.

Here's what I don't get. Oldies 95.7 in Milwaukee is 24/7 Christmas music except when the Wisconsin Badgers are playing football or basketball. IF they can broadcast the games why can't they plat AT-40 too?

Regarding "Fairytale," it may not have been a big gamble for the Pointer Sisters, but it was for their label. Blue Thumb Records has never had a country act on the roster so they were totally clueless on how to promote the song. If it wasn't for their performance at the Grand Ole Opry, the song wouldn't been a hit.

Meanwhile, WKIX noted on their site that they'll start 70s Casey an hour earlier Sunday so they can carry the Duke basketball game, but they've yet to post either Premiere cue sheet. dL Here's the latest on Yusuf Islam aka Cat Stevens www.reuters.com/article/2014/09/16/us-music-britain-catstevens-idUSKBN0HB1WG20140916

Here's what I don't get. Oldies 95.7 in Milwaukee is 24/7 Christmas music except when the Wisconsin Badgers are playing football or basketball. IF they can broadcast the games why can't they plat AT-40 too? Because the sports are considered a part of their format. Whereas with Christmas music, they consider AT40 breaking that format. From the programming side, I get it. Listener is promised Christmas music, listener gets Christmas music. And if the station is known in the area for broadcasting the games, the games are just as expected and important for the listener as the Christmas music.

A new show next week. Cue sheet: charismusicgroup.com/Cue%20Sheets/12-08-73.pdfOptional extra predictions for the 12/8/73 show: * "The Way We Were" by Barbra Streisand (which debuted 2 weeks ago way down at #92) * "Love's Theme" by The Love Unlimited Orchestra (which debuted the previous week down at #89) * "Jungle Boogie" by Kool & The Gang... debuting on the 12/8/73 chart at #100! I guess program directors had a hard time finding "out of the box" hits back in late 1973?

The only song that seemed seriously truncated to my ears was "My Ding-a-Ling", and that may have been done in the original airing, since that hour contained the rather long "American City Suite" (and "Ding-a-Ling" was on its way down). We also got the entire "Convention '72" in the final hour. The only other obvious edit I noticed was "All the Young Dudes". I'd wager that was from the original broadcast, as the verse edited out has lyrics some stations would not have chosen to air. In the airing of this show (11/18/72) I heard "Operator," "Ventura Highway" and "Summer Breeze" also were cut short.

Wow! The songs from the 12/8/73 chart remind me more of Christmas '73 than any Christmas song! I could hear AT40 Sunday mornings and Tuesday nights (Wednesday MID-3AM) on WNCI back then! Two Christmas songs I did buy that were playing on WNCI near Christmas; "Christmas Just Ain't..." by the O'Jays and "Who Took The Merry Out Of Christmas" by the Staple Singers. I had bought Kool & The Gang's "Wild & Peaceful" (thanks to "Funky Stuff" making it to AT40) by this time and loved the cuts "More Funky Stuff", "Jungle Boogie" and I was just starting to pay attention to "Hollywood Swinging."
My Christmas '73 songs from this week's show:
Some Guys Have All The Luck-Persuaders Me And Baby Brother-War Johnnie Taylor-Cheaper To Keep Her I Got A Name-Jim Croce The Joker-Steve Miller Band D'yer Mak'er-Led Zeppelin
