Confirming the extras...
"Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" / Elton John "If You're Ready (Come Go With Me)" / Staple Singers "Hello It's Me" / Todd Rundgren
So it looks like there's a multi-way tie for one correct guess.

Interesting that Premiere pulled debuts from the next week's charts for both the 70s and 80s shows this week. That makes our job of guessing the optional oldies that much harder... or more fun!
One thing about this week's 70s show I really like... the strength of the debuts easily outpaces the strength of the songs which drop out of the Top 40. This week, the debuts would peak at #1, #1, #4 and #7 while the songs falling out peaked at #18, #30, #31 and #33. A few might say the like hearing the occasional song which would only spend a few weeks on the countdown but for me, it was always exciting to hear a strong set of songs debut on AT40. Plus, having three of the songs debut at #31, #30 and #28 creates some major anticipation. Looking forward to hearing 39 out of the 40 songs this week... I'll skip "Basketball Jones" (my ears are already bleeding just thinking of this song) but at least it is sandwiched in between the classic "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" and the joyful "Loves Me Like A Rock".

One song from this week's 10/20/73 program -- Jesse by Roberta Flack -- peaked at number 30 on the Hot 100. And scrolling through a few Cashbox Top 100 charts during this time period, I discovered that same song peaked at number 12. Yes, I know the tabulation for the two charts had slightly different criteria, but I still enjoy identifying this type of contrast.

Obviously with Radio & Records, that's what creates a sometimes drastic difference with the Hot 100, but I will admit I'm not as familiar with how the Cashbox charts were compiled.

Prediction for next week's show:
1st Guess: 10/28/72 2nd Guess: 10/30/71
It's been a long time now since we've gotten either of these years...as a matter of fact, my show log tells me that we've only heard 1971 as an A show TWICE so far this year! I guess Premiere must really have decided to go light on 1970 and '71 at this point. I am going to guess that maybe we get 1972 next week and '71 the week after...

Part of this was referenced in another thread so might as well post now. In this week's show, Casey talks about how Bobby Goldsboro had a clause in his recording contract that he did have to do any recording during the World Series. As it turned out, the series' last 2 games were played the weekend that this show was originally broadcast. So the World Series went 7 games and ended on October 21. Of course, this year's series will start on that date.

WBBG is playing 1974.5 - one segment from 10.20.73 then one from 10.09.76 (last week's show).
So far hour 2, segment 2 and hour 3, segment 1 have been from last week's show.
Blame it on automation - partially. The computer only played what someone told it to and that someone didn't check the content.

I just heard the well-done tribute to Jim Croce, which I hadn't heard since it was first broadcast 41 years ago! I remember that day very well because I was melancholy due to my team's losing the World Series in the seventh game. They've won only once since (NY Mets).

Prediction for next week's show:10/26/74-I don't think Premiere has aired this one before-This show is also notable because "Nothing From Nothing" dropped all the way from #1 down to #15.

Mike, I see the note for the number one hits of the 70's. Do you know approximately when part 4 will be broadcast (I assume a holiday weekend)? I'm guessing this upcoming holidays isn't happening.

Prediction for next week's show:10/26/74-I don't think Premiere has aired this one before-This show is also notable because "Nothing From Nothing" dropped all the way from #1 down to #15. And the very next week, "Then Came You" also fell from #1 to #15 -- the same crazy drop two weeks in a row! And I think those two instances still hold the record...

SFGuy: I asked this question on FB a while back and was told that Part 4 will be sometime next year. There were no specifics but it left open the suggestion that Part 4 will be Memorial Weekend, Part 5 July 4th Weekend, Part 6 Labor Day Weekend. But its also been posted that it might take more parts to get through 1979, so some extra weekends might play in this in 2015. Hopefully we will know in short order. I love these specials.
With many stations going Christmas before Thanksgiving, most likely including WODC, no non-Christmas music specials can be aired by those stations. In this case I like the idea of waiting until next year to continue the series.
With all-Christmas looming I also like the idea of airing as many AT4070s specials as possible (calling it AT40CTOBERFEST for lack of a better excuse) all this month.
I love the AT40 Christmas specials with all those great stories behind the tunes and artists and the rare recordings. I'm really confident that we'll hear the 1971 and 1973 specials again this year. Those two are actually AT40 shows. Many other specials give us a chance to hear AT40's American Top 10 and American Top 20 spinoff shows. I remember my wife asking, after hearing the intro to "American Top 10" last year, "It takes three hours to count ten records?"

I am so loving hearing "Summer (The First Time)" on WMGN as I type this! As a 15-year-old in the fall of '73 this song got me so, er ,'worked up', if you will... "Her shoulders were bare, and I tried not to stare, as I looked at her 'tulips' (sic)..."

I heard the tribute to Jim Croce and forgot it was on this particular show. He made many references to Croce the weeks after the plane crash, but this tribute on the 10/20/73 was terrific! I'll listen again just for that tonight, but I know I'll get hooked on the rest of the show once again. I've seen many positive posts about this episode, more than any regular show in months! But it is really, really good. Casey seems at the top of his game and there are many songs to love.
