I haven't been here in a while but I wanted to make sure I hit before the end of 2014 and say Happy New Year! It's been a sad year, not only because of Casey's death, but the story that has surrounded it and still goes on even to this day. But the passionate ones here kept the positives going, and we had some great special shows to hear that honored Casey's work. Having the chance to present these shows on WODC in 2014 helped me to rise from the doldrums and enjoy the legacy of AT40. It's New Year's Eve and hearing AT40 on iHeartRadio brings back memories of hearing special New Year's Eve countdowns that local stations produced on their own. AM radio at night was fascinating back then!
I appreciate the kudos from fellow board members and the recognition of the efforts to bring AT40 to you in these days of new technology. It doesn't always go as smoothly as back when you had a live board-op playing the vinyl, but you do your best dealing with the technology we have now and the permissions you have to make it work the way you want.
I've said before here that I don't program AT40 to get kudos from the fans on this board or other ones. I can see the tendency for programmers or those with the opportunity to touch the show to seek kudos from the fan base for airing AT40, and that's not a bad thing. But AT40 is being aired on WODC for listeners of the station in Columbus, OH as there are plenty of other stations airing the same programs across the country. Of course, our Web site streaming is meant to draw listeners from many other places and that is exciting! I don't program the show for those who like to record it. It's fine to do that, but if the show starts or ends outside of the parameters set during extra airings, it's because a special effort is being made to present more of the show despite the commercial loads that aren't adjusted for these special broadcasts outside of the hours specifically sold for the program. If we asked for sales to reduce inventory every time we wanted to air extra shows, we wouldn't be airing them at all. The guilty pleasure is I'm a fan, too and it is so much fun to be associated with AT40 in such a big way!
I feel blessed that the show remains to be offered to radio, as we now know there is the potential for it to be presented on other platforms. With the various breaches we've read about this year (buying, selling, trading of shows) and being very public about recording them (which we have the right to do for our own listening pleasure), I've always feared some changes in the way its presented could be made. Just my gut feelings.
Let's enjoy and honor Casey's work in 2015, and all the best wishes to you and especially to the Kasem family as they (and we) continue to be distracted by the drama that sometimes clouds his legacy. I can't believe it's happening.
