I am excited about the January 6, 1973 show. We started Christmas just before the December 1972 show, so some of the songs I wanted to hear on that one will be on this one. I bought quite a few records around this period, too. My purchases increased greatly in 1973. I too was spending most of my allowance money on 45s then as well. I distinctly remember that on December 26, 1972, I was at Sears, buying "You're So Vain" with the familiar 'caterpillar' Elektra label, and "Crocodile Rock" with a strange black and white label that said "MCA". What was this? Where was the familiar yellow UNI label that all of my previous Elton John singles had sported? I did not know that both UNI and Decca had been folded into MCA, and that Elton's new single was the very first one released with the new label name. Strange that I still remember this all these years later!

Going to guess the extras.
The classic rock extra of the week:
* "The Relay" -- The Who.
Surprised few people thought of the ultimate tribute song and probably THE most original song of 1973:
* "The Cover of the Rolling Stone" -- Dr. Hook.
And what someone who's on Facebook and mad at someone might say when they receive a connection request from the offending person:
* "Don't Expect Me to Be Your Friend" -- Lobo.
... for this week's soft rock extra. (Or it could be perfect on a rainy night (preferably late at night, anytime between 10 p.m. and midnight), stopped at a railroad crossing and watching a slow-passing train roll through the intersection as the signal lights and gates flash. Don't ask why ... .)

The Jan. 6, 1973 show was the first regular countdown I heard from start to finish. Here are my choices for the Optional Extra Derby from 42 years ago:
--Could It Be I'm Falling in Love-Spinners --Do You Want to Dance-Bette Midler --Don't Expect Me to Be Your Friend-Lobo
Tiebreaker/longshot choice: You're a Lady-Peter Skellern--a song that I heard a lot on the MOR station that my parents listened to--it sounded like a hit from my 11-year-old ears. It was a big hit in Skellern's native Britain, but stateside it was probably hampered by a competing version, by Dawn.

I've said before here that I don't program AT40 to get kudos from the fans on this board or other ones. I can see the tendency for programmers or those with the opportunity to touch the show to seek kudos from the fan base for airing AT40, and that's not a bad thing. But AT40 is being aired on WODC for listeners of the station in Columbus, OH as there are plenty of other stations airing the same programs across the country. Of course, our Web site streaming is meant to draw listeners from many other places and that is exciting! Sure there are plenty of other stations airing only part of the same AT40 program when its either late 1978-early1979 or year-enders and not the complete 4-hour version like WODC along with KOKZ including all 4 Premiere Optional Extras, that's why! I worked in radio for almost fifteen years. Glad I got to experience what it was like before the days of automation and deregulation. It seems to me most local to mid market radio is a wasteland of nothing with either too small a staff, one person doing ten jobs, or people that don't know what radio used to be or care what it means. It is so refreshing to hear someone who still works in radio have the passion you do for its history and caring what airs on your station. Thank you for your insightful post and your part in keeeping Casey's legacy alive.

Prediction for next week's show:
1st Guess: 1/15/77 2nd Guess: 1/20/79
OK, so my record in the 70's series over the last month and a half has been abysmal, since Premiere has gone on this recent early 70's binge. At some point that has to change, so I am going to keep guessing late 70's until it does...

Is that a confirmed year? Or is that your guess? If we are in fact getting a 1977 show, then my losing streak may be over.

WODC last weekend for part II year-end skipped optional extra: Happy Days theme song. Yes they did. They also came in late for the opening of hour #4--Casey was in the middle of the intro for "Afternoon Delight" when they came out of the commercial break.
