For some reason, 'GHN started the '72 show early. It's 5:09, and they're already up to 'All the young dudes' at #37.

Next week '70s: 11/25/1978 Top 30 Christmas Songs of All Time (2003) WODC went Christmas 24/7, so what station is broadcasting the full 4 hour program (11/25/1978)? May be WPNC, KOKZ?

Surprised that only an "A" show is appearing this week. Must be that most of the stations that take the "B" option (or in the very least 1973-or-later only shows when given the choice) are adult contemporary stations that are now 24/7 Christmas.
Predicted extras:
• "The Gambler" – Kenny Rogers. Already a big country hit, about to become a memorable pop hit. • "New York Groove" – Ace Frehley. • "A Little More Love" – Olivia Newton-John. At No. 68, the highest debut of the week. • "I Will Survive" – Gloria Gaynor. At No. 107, it debuted this week as the "B" side to a song called "Substitute." The "B" side must have been much like "Maggie May" seven years earlier … another song intended to be the "hit," it flopped but then someone played the B side, it caught on and becomes iconic in pop culture history.
Backup extra: "Substitute" - Gloria Gaynor. Why NOT play the "B" side and tell what might have been … .

Not unusual at this time of year--the 'B' shows are typically the Christmas specials. They don't usually have regular weekly countdowns as 'B' shows again until after Christmas.

Wow, there are seven extras in the show: Satisfaction, Knock Three Times, Sgt. Pepper Heart's Club, One Bad Apple, Oh Happy Day, Me & Bobby McGee, and Handy Man. It will be interesting to see what stays in the show versus what becomes an optional extra versus what may get dropped (if any). The show expanded to four hours with the first week of October, 1978, but one of the new features that was introduced to fill extra time, the recaps of last week's top three, didn't begin until February 1979. The shows from in between often have numerous seemingly random extras.

The shows from in between often have numerous seemingly random extras. Probably the reason they eventually introduced the top 3 recap segment a few months after this show. You have to wonder if it became a challenge to come up with a half-dozen or more extras every week, and if at some point there was evidence that the listening audience would just rather hear the current week's most popular songs a second time than a number of random extras with old songs. I have to admit that when I was a kid, I would have rather heard more current material that some old songs from the 60s and early 70s. I used to get bored by the 60s archives during the 1980 and '81 shows. Now I think it's fun to hear those songs...

I'm rather surprised that KKLZ in Las Vegas has gone Christmas-They've never done that before.

11/18/72 was severely edited-Was that the doing of Premiere or Watermark?

Prediction for next week's show:
1st Guess: 11/30/74 2nd Guess: 11/24/73
This one is a near slam-dunk--the last time we heard 1974 was in August. I'm a little surprised they've waited so long, but the guess is that Premiere is moving toward fewer shows overall from the first half of the 70s.

11/18/72 was severely edited-Was that the doing of Premiere or Watermark? The only song that seemed seriously truncated to my ears was "My Ding-a-Ling", and that may have been done in the original airing, since that hour contained the rather long "American City Suite" (and "Ding-a-Ling" was on its way down). We also got the entire "Convention '72" in the final hour.

I'd wager that was from the original broadcast, as the verse edited out has lyrics some stations would not have chosen to air.

The movie "Scarecrow" will be shown on Turner Classic Movies on Friday night/Saturday morning, starting at midnight Eastern time. Released to theatres in 1973, a faux AT40 program is briefly heard in it, in a scene that takes place in Detroit. Ironically, AT40 wasn't heard in Detroit after 1971 until its return in 1978.
