The extras were different then and the first hour was not offered at that time. The first hour was offered. In fact, the show was truncated into three hours, just like the 1978 year-end shows. All the original extras, LDD, AT40 archives, were deleted. Right--that was in 2007 when Premiere was apparently still trying to figure out how to deal with the 4-hour shows. I believe as kchkwong says, that they did chop down the 10/14/78 to 3 hours but kept all 40 countdown songs in the show. They also tried offering the disco special (7/7/79) as the full show with the first hour optional just like they do with the 4-hour shows now. After 2007, Premiere stopped playing the 4-hour late '78 and '79 shows altogether until November 2010, when they aired the 11/3/79 show with only hours 2-4 offered (the first hour was not made available at all). It was that way until April 2012 (the 4/28/79 show), when the 4-hour shows were offered with the first hour made optional as it is now... As for the optional extras for this weekend's airing of the 1978 show, it is my impression that this will be a whole new set of extras. I am going to guess that in the early days of the re-airings of the classic shows in 2007, Premiere had not gotten that creative with the extras yet. Plus, as BrettVW says, there would presumably only have been 3 extras at that time since the show was condensed into 3 hours--paul listed 4 extra songs for this weekend's airing.

I have mixed feelings about that project. I get that the idea is to expand the Casey content of the show -- listeners tune in to hear Casey, not Larry -- but presenting something as part of a particular week's show that really wasn't seems kind of pointless to me. It also limits Premiere to using songs that Casey actually played on AT40, and to using things in the intro and outro that Casey actually said back in the day. When Larry intros and outros the songs, they can throw in curveballs that never hit the Top 40, and comment on the songs from a modern-day perspective. I agree with you on this. While I understand the desire to make it sound like Casey is voicing these extras (and impressive how they have made those extras sound as authentic as they have), as a dedicated weekly listener, it is confusing to me when these come on because the question immediately arises as to whether these are actual extras from the original show that Premiere has pulled out and provided as optional, or if they are just a manufactured extra with Casey's voice dubbed in. If Larry Morgan is voicing these, there is obviously no need to try and discern whether they were part of the original broadcast from 1970-73.

The first time I am excited for an optional extra- the Halloween theme. Why would Ed McMann do it? Like I said, I'm excited for the Halloween theme as well! Because unless Premiere had Larry Morgan redo them, 10/14/1978 was first rebroadcast back in 2007 when Ed McMann was voicing Optional Extras. Sorry, I'm not holding out a lot of hope for hearing "Bahston Ed" again over Premiere. dL

I don't recall those extras being used in 2007- plus there would have only been 3 at the time. I think Paul posted them simply to let the guessers know they had nothing to do with the weekly chart You're absolutely right -- I went back and re-read Paul's post, and he didn't say that these were the same optional extras as last time. I guess my brain (and apparently tekkielo's, too) read something in Paul's post that it was expecting to be there, but actually wasn't.

Having read through the old posts of this thread, I found this: No. There are NO extras heard on the show. Just numbers 40 through 1. Actually, two extras not in the original were thrown in. Filling time perhaps: 1. Ed introduces Al Stewart's "Time Passages" as "climbing up the chart" 2. Casey introduces Edgar Winter Band's "Frankenstein" as the "Hallowe'en Extra", which may have been from the 10/30/76 broadcast (complete with the mid-70's Moog music bed). Frankenstein was one of the optional extras last time and it was voiced by Casey and it was taken from another show, just like what Premiere is doing right now with shows from 1970-1973. Interesting to know whether they will use this again or they will let Larry introduce it.

The week after the B show is the one I just heard...10/21/78. This will show how diverse my musical interests are. These are all the songs I would put in the great category including extras. The songs by Pablo Cruise, Styx, Bee Gees, Player, Al Stewart, Michael Johnson, Sylvester, Steely Dan, Gino Vannelli, Hall & Oates, Stones, Crystal Gayle, Who, Stevie Wonder, Captain & Tennille, Foxy, Foreigner, Ambrosia, Boston, Donna Summer, Natalie Cole, Loggins & Nicks, Chicago, A Taste of Honey and Exile. Best thing of all...none of the songs are edited or cutoff since they have moved to a 4 hour show.

Prediction for next week's show:
1st Guess: 11/1/75 2nd Guess: 10/27/79
As I go through each year of the 70s, the year that stands out the most for next week is 1975. I don't think they would play 1979, but I can't come up with a better year for a 2nd guess (and yes it's an October show, but they dipped back into the previous month the last time a '79 show was aired). 11/4/78 would have been a strong candidate if not for the fact that they're airing 1978 as a B show this coming weekend...

Again this week, Raliegh's WKIX did not post Premiere cue sheets. WKIX finally added the cue sheets for both the 70s and 80s show for this past weekend. The previous weekend is still missing, though.

But 11/1/75 has never been played, and it's been longer since that year was a "A". With 1971 airing this week, that makes 1972 the year that hasn't been played longest as an "A"; the last time that happened was early August, though it was a "B" in September. But 11/4/72 was played just two years ago, so it's unlikely they'll do that next week. I think later in November we'll get either 11/18/72 (last aired in 2011) or 11/25 (never played so far).

As for 11/2/74, that show can't totally be ruled out, but...11/2/74 was played in 2010, and again as a B show in 2012, which is why I'm leaning away from '74 for next week. As for the following week...
