Never heard either Starbuck song you mentioned. How do they sound? You would recognize it as Starbuck as soon as you heard it, believe me. Actually, I liked "Lucky Man" too...remember that one?

WHEN LOVE HAS GONE AWAY -Riccardo Coccione (I really wish this hit the top 40 so i can hear opinions of this tune on this board) bigal, I remember watching this one climb the Hot 100 after its debut at #61. It seemed to be a sure shot for AT40, but stopped cold at #41. WDHF-FM (the AT40 station in Chicago at the time) played it for a week or two but must've pulled it from the playlist once it lost its chart momentum. I vaguely remember hearing it -- it seemed to have all the elements (strong vocal, production, etc.) to become a great chart hit. So what happened to it? We may never know. I had a best friend in school who loved this song, and predicted it was going to be a big hit - I wasn't as sure as he was, but thought it would at least make the Top 40. It's funny - I was just listening to this song the other day - I've got a bunch of 'homemade' CDs of all the songs that made the Hot 100 charts each year from around 1966 to up around 1999.

I still need to sit down and look at my Joel Whitburn's Billboard Hot 100 Charts book from the 70s - I know that my list will be long!

Mongoose - Elephant's Memory - was on the chart for 14 weeks - peaked at #50
Funk #49 - James Gang - got as high as #59 - still played on Classic Radio stations

You know, when I was in England, I was waiting and waiting for this song to sneak into the top 40. I wanted so badly for Casey Kasem to mention this Jackson Five - like act. They ended up peaking at #41, but they made the ARC chart, though. Still it's just not enough.
Five Star - "Can't Wait Another Minute"
So - Are You Sure (made the R&R top 40) #41
Wang Chung - To Live And Die In L.A. - It's my IPOD banger
Rod Stewart - Another Heartache - co-written by Bryan Adams - #52
Missing Persons - Words - #42
Chris DeBurgh - High On Emotion - #44
There's more...

Wang Chung - To Live And Die In L.A. - It's my IPOD banger I have to wonder how this missed the Top 40, since it made it to #30 on R&R. Maybe it wasn't a big seller, but the two charts were becoming more and more similar by this point, so this 11-notch discrepancy is a bit head-scratching. "Another Heartache" made the R&R chart as well, but only hit #38.

1971:
It's Up To You Petula - Edison Lighthouse - peaked at #72 - catchy little tune that sounded like a lot of the songs out at that time
Keep The Customer Satisfied - Gary Puckett (Of Union Gap) - peaked at #71
Lucky Man - Emerson Lake & Palmer - Hard to believe this classic song only made it to #48 - stayed on the Hot 100 for 12 weeks - was re-released in late 72/early 73 - still only got to #51 the second go around
Time and Love - Barbra Streisand - jumped from 82-65 - stalled at 51 - nice, uptempo pop song
13 Questions - Seatrain - one of my favoirte songs from the summer of '71 - spent 12 weeks on the chart - stalled at #49
Can't Find The Time - Rose-Colored Glass - Another song that spend a long time (14 weeks) on the Hot 100 - but only got as high as #54
Cry Baby - Janis Joplin - debuted at 68 - peaked at #42 (close but no cigar)
Tarkio Road - Brewer & Shipley - follow up to "One Toke Over the Line" only got to #55
Light Sings - 5th Dimension - I guess the hits started to slow down for this group - but song only made it to #44
Walk Away - James Gang (led by Joe Walsh) - make it 2 for 2 for this group - great summer song that is still played on Classic Radio - only made it to #51 - was on the Hot 100 for 10 weeks
Rainy Jane - Davy Jones (of Monkees) - thought for sure this would hit the Top 40 - I remember it made the local top 10 countdown where I lived - peaked at #52 - was on for 9 weeks
She Didn't Do Magic - Lobo - this was an early song (before all the hits started for Lobo) - I remember buying it and liking it a lot - but unfortunately, only got to #46 - stayed on Hot 100 for 9 weeks
Crazy About The La La La - Smokey Robinson - got up to #56 - nice pop tune
Where Evil Grows - Poppy Family (Which Way You Goin' Billy peaked at #45 - was on the Hot 100 for 12 weeks
Marianne - Stephen Stills - debuted on Hot 100 at #64 - got to #42 and stalled there for 2 weeks
Talk It Over In The Morning - Anne Murray - only got to #57 - was a nice pop song
It's a Crying Shame - Gayle McCormick - former lead singer of Smith - I remember buying this album on cassette a few years later - nice, pop tune - should've done much better than #44 - another one of those songs that spend a long time (12 weeks) on the Hot 100
Love - Lettermen - debuted at #73 - got to #42 - not a personal favorite, but with as much airplay that this song received where I lived, I'm surprised it never made the top 40
Don't Want To Live Inside Myself - Bee Gees - lesser known song by the group - peaked at #53

"Rockaway Beach," Ramones (#66 in 1977) - they should have made it at least once, and this was the closest they came.
"I Do the Rock," Tim Curry (#91 in 1979) - so catchy and fun.

Does this one count? It's an oddity. "LaGrange" - ZZ Top. According to the Joel Whitburn book, Top Pop Singles, 1955-2002, LaGrange peaked at #41. However, the AT 40 show of 06/29/74 had it at number #33. I was writing down the top 40 every week at that time and believe it or not, I still have them! I loved the song and thought wow this is great, debuting at #33. The next week was a AT 40 special, and then after that, never heard it again on AT40. I then compared my written list as they were counted down by Casey to the actual Hot 100 list in the Billboard Hot 100 Charts of the 70's for that same week, and sure enough that week, LaGrange was at number 41. Upon further review, there seemed to be a number of songs that were listed differently on the actual chart than they were stated to be on AT40. Sounds like they had multiple charts that week. Too bad for LaGrange, one of ZZ top's best, should have gone higher, much higher!!

Never heard either Starbuck song you mentioned. How do they sound? You would recognize it as Starbuck as soon as you heard it, believe me. Actually, I liked "Lucky Man" too...remember that one? the instrumental break with that odd instrument (Xayaphone?) that was also used in MOONLIGHT is a dead give away.

From Pete B's book, Re: LaGrange and AT40, that week's show's top 40 was based on an ESTIMATE by the staff since it needed to be recorded with Casey going out of town before the chart was ready....so that explained it paying in the show without actually hitting the top 40.
