OK - to go along with Josh Joel's really good thread (most awesomely bad AT 40 song) - how about the songs that you felt should've done a LOT better on the charts - in other words, songs that peaked way too low on AT 40.
I know for me, there were a LOT of songs that didn't even make AT 40 - but that's another thread entirely.
I guess we need to limit it to AT 40 charts during Casey and Shadoe years.

Maybe Attomic by Blondie, as far as I remember it peaked so low in the AT40, but it was a great number 1 in The UK.
Also Madonna´s Holiday.
Let´s work by Mick Jagger. It was a big number 1 in my own Top 40, but no that good in AT40. I dont like so much The Stones, but I do the solo Jagger.
James Ingram & Michael McDonald - Yah Mo B There , too.

AT40 only played "Atomic" at #40 for two weeks and missed its' peak of #39 to air the Book of Records special
"Let's Work" was on AT40 for one week - a show Charlie Van Dyke hosted

I totally agree with you JCaragon. "Atomic" is one of the best songs ever. Also, "Turn Me Loose" by Loverboy peaked at #35. I remember hearing that all the time as a kid.
Also, "Time" by the Alan Parsons Project should have been at least a Top 10 hit. And how can "I Don't Need You" by Kenny Rogers peak at #3, but "Through The Years" only at #12? I thought it would have been the opposite.

Another 2 big number 1s in the UK:
There must be an angel playing with my heart by Eurythmics
and
Sacrifice by Elton John.
Also, The sun always shines on TV by A-ha.

"Absolutely Right"--Five Man Electrical Band (No. 26, 1971) This song definitely had the potential to become a way bigger hit than it was (catchy melody, great chorus/hook and high-spirited singing and playing) and should have gone at least Top 10. My all-time favorite "lost classic" of the golden age of AT40.
"More Than Just the Two of Us"--Sneaker (No. 34, late 1981-early 1982) Gorgeous light-rock ballad that, like "Absolutely Right", had all the makings of what should have been a smash hit (Top 10, maybe even Top 5).

While I don't know if it's my most underachieving song EVER, "Mamma Mia" is a song that definitely should have done better. It was Abba's lowest charting (#32) top 40 hit (even such forgotten songs as "Honey, Honey" and "When All Is Said And Done" did better, both #27). Interestingly, thanks to the musical and the movie, it's gotten more press (and I believe play) than any other Abba song besides "Dancing Queen".
Usually there is no specific reason why a song didn't do better on the charts; however, the mention of "Turn Me Loose" shows that for that song, there was a specific reason. In a book from years (decades?) ago "Hit Men", Frederic Dannen, told the story of how of group of promoters called The Network, were angry that CBS had decided not to pay them anymore. In order to show that they could make or break a song, they picked on "Turn Me Loose" and got stations to stop playing it, which resulted in its peaking at only #37.

And "Working for The Weekend" only peaked at #29. I remember hearing that song all the time as a kid. Don't know why this peaked so low either.

Another one of my favorites that charted low is "Autobahn" by Kraftwerk in 1975. I know they are playing 75 a lot right now, but I hope they play it in April and May when this song charted.
Also, how can "Another Star" by Stevie Wonder only peak in the 30s in 1977. I love that song so much. Definitely one of his best!

I'll second and third everyone's suggestion of "Turn Me Loose" by Loverboy.
That's a very interesting story by atruefan concerning that particular song - that's too bad, if that's how it all went down - the song deserved better!

How bout back to back Meatloaf singles that peaked at #39...Paradise by the Dashboard Light and You Took the Words Right Out of my Mouth. He might have the top 2 most played songs that peaked at that position in the rock era. Someone mentioned Atomic which peaked at 39 but does any station play that song? I suppose it was the length of those Meatloaf songs that did them in although he went all the way to #1 with an equally long song, "I'd Do Anything for Love but I Won't do That".

Well Paradise was chopped a bit (by at40 I think) to 5:30 or so. I'd do anything for love's edit was about the same. as was Two out Of Three.
Love Or Let Me Be Lonely by Paul Davis. That was a good version. Vienna Calling by Falco was a great song as well. Under Pressure By Queen & David Bowie Heck, Can't believe Bohemian Rhapsody didn't make # 1 either time!

The chart history of Blondie's songs is very interesting to me. They had some big #1's,Call Me Rapture and The Tide is High and as I believe not even any other top 10 hits and then some other songs that barely cracked the top 40. It was very hit and miss so to speak.

I'll add these songs:
From 1972 Could It Be Forever - David Cassidy (Peak #37) From The Beginning - Emerson, Lake & Palmer (Peak #39)
From 1973 Let's Pretend - The Raspberries (Peak #35) Jesus Is Just Alright - The Doobie Brothers (Peak #35)
From 1974 WOLD - Harry Chapin (Peak #36)
From 1975 Part Of The Plan - Dan Fogelberg (Peak #31) Diamonds And Rust - Joan Baez (Peak #35)
From 1977 All You Get From A Love Song Is A Love Song - The Carpenters (Peak #35)
From 1978 As - Stevie Wonder (Peak #36) Warm Ride - Rare Earth (Peak #39)
I own many of these songs and was disappointed that none of them reached the Top 20.
